2008 NBA DRAFT NIGHT COVERAGE

I am at the Lifetime Fitness Center in the Target Center in Downtown Minneapolis for the Minnesota Timberwolves 2008 NBA Draft party. There are many people here at the Lifetime Fitness Center. The Masters Of Ceremonies of the Draft party are Tom Hanneman and Jim Peterson.

The first pick of the 2008 NBA Draft is being made by the Chicago Bulls and they selected Derrick Rose from Memphis. The Miami Heat has the second pick in the draft Micheal Beasley from Kansas State.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have the third pick in the draft. There is tension in the air. People are very curious on who the Minnesota Timberwolves will pick here in the draft. With the third pick in the 2008 NBA Draft the MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES SLECT OJ MAYO FROM USC. O J Mayo was one of the more talked about players that were available. O J Mayo only spent one year in college. When the Timberwolves made there pick the place went crazy. A lot of people here thought that the Timberwolves made the correct pick.

The Memphis Grizzles selected UCLA big man Kevin Love. Coming into the draft Kevin Love was another one of those names that you heard a lot and he was all over the country trying out for different teams.

Fred Hoiberg thought that OJ was the total package. He can play both guard spots. OJ Mayo had a great interview with the Timberwolves staff. According to Fred Hoiberge OJ Mayo has been working out with many different teams. Fred thinks that there might be selecting a European player.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have the two picks in the second half. With the 31st pick in the draft the Timberwolves drafted Nikola Penkovic from Montengro. He is a 6-11 Center. He played with Partizan Belgrade last year. With the 34th pick the Timberwolves Mario Chalmers from the University of Kansas. He was an early entry player this year. He was a JR this past season. During his years at Kansas he averaged 12.2 points per game. His full name is Almario Vernard Chalmers.

According to the Minneapolis Startribune OJ Mayo got traded to Memphis for Kevin Love. And the Timberwolves traded the draft rights of Mario Chalmers to Miami for two future second round draft picks and cash.

Even though that the Timberwolves got rid OJ Mayo I think that the Timberwolves got who they wanted to get in the end.

This is a report that I found at espn.com. This better explains the draft better then I can do and it explains the trade that took place.

The
Minnesota Timberwolves aren't holding on to O.J. Mayo for long.
Two league sources told ESPN.com that the Wolves have reached an agreement in principle with the
Memphis Grizzlies that will send the draft rights to Mayo, Marko Jaric, Antoine Walker and Greg Buckner to the Grizzlies in return for the draft rights to Kevin Love, Mike Miller, Brian Cardinal and Jason Collins.

The deal is a blockbuster for both teams. ESPN.com reported on Tuesday that Wolves GM Kevin McHale was infatuated with Love, but felt that the team had to select Mayo and use him to acquire more assets. Love, a fundamentally-sound post player, should mesh well with the Timberwolves' budding star
Al Jefferson.

2006: Portland acquires the draft rights to No. 2 pick LaMarcus Aldridge and a future second-round pick from Chicago for Viktor Khryapa and the draft rights to No. 4 pick Tyrus Thomas.

1998: Golden State acquires draft rights to No. 4 pick Antawn Jamison for draft rights to No. 5 pick Vince Carter.

1996: Milwaukee trades draft rights to No. 4 pick Stephon Marbury to Minnesota for draft rights to No. 5 pick Ray Allen and a future first-round pick.

1993: Orlando trades draft rights to No. 1 pick Chris Webber to Golden State for draft rights to No. 3 pick Anfernee Hardaway and three future first-round picks.

-- ESPN Research
In addition to landing Love, the Wolves get a sharpshooting swingman in Miller who can help carry the scoring load from the perimeter. The deal is also a financial boon for the Timberwolves, who get the bad contract of Jaric (three years, $21 million) off the books. Walker's and Buckner's contracts are not guaranteed after this season.

Timberwolves fans will likely be reminded of another lottery-swapping move two years ago, when Minnesota selected
Brandon Roy, then traded him to Portland for Randy Foye and cash.
Roy went on to become rookie of the year in 2006-07 and an All-Star last season, while Foye has struggled with injuries while showing promise as a floor leader and playmaking perimeter threat.
The Grizzlies get the superstar they wanted in the backcourt in Mayo. They also rid themselves of Cardinal's bad contract (two years, $13 million). The Grizzlies now have a glut of guards on the team with Mayo,
Mike Conley, Kyle Lowry and Javaris Crittenton.

North Tartan comes out on fire they have gotten an 18-2 lead. With 10:00 left to go in the first half. At the beginning of this game it looks like North Tartan is just toying with this Minnesota Stars team. I mean North Tartan came out pumped up and ready to go after these guys.

Both teams are playing hard. Even through The Minnesota Stars have been down the whole first half they are not giving up. I think that they thought that they would have an easy time with this North Tartan team and they just have to settle down and try to get back into this game.

At half time the score is North Tartan 39 and the Minnesota Stars 21

As this second half gets underway North Tartan is being more patient with the ball. They don’t want to give up this lead. They have come out and really put the hammer down on the Minnesota Stars. The reason that I think that The Minnesota Stars are just tired so they are not able to get up and down with this more athletic North Tartan team.

North Tartan just got up big to star the game and they just ran with it the whole way. They beat the Minnesota Stars by the final of 70-48.

North Tartan is looking to push the ball up the court. They are getting into the passing lanes and trying to disrupt the ball. They are doing a good job of that. North Tartan just took a time out to settle things down.

With 12:00 left to go in the game it has become a 10 point game both teams are in this game. You can’t count North Tartan out of this one. They are playing hard and they are hoping for a break. This game will be decided on how well each team will be able to execute their stuff. The Metro Stars have been able to do that a little bit better up to this point.

Both teams are playing very hard and well up to this point. Neither team is giving up they both want to win this game. North Tartan has dropped back into court man to man coverage. There is an even flow to this game. Both teams are making shots and both teams are playing hard. Both teams are getting the ball up and the court. The pace to this game will be important because I think that what ever team is able to control the tempo will come out on top.

The Minnesota Stars are playing a controlled motion offence. They are working the ball around the out side of the key. There is a lot of movement by the Minnesota Stars players. There is also a lot of passing and cutting that takes place. The Minnesota Stars have to make strong cuts and look to the basket to score.

The Metro Stars are running sets mid way through the first half. They have a number of sets that they run. Each play is created to get a certain player the ball so she can try to score the ball.

The Metro Stars have gained a slight advantage with 4:00 left to go in the first half. The score is 19-16. This lead is due to the shot selection by the Metro Stars. The Minnesota Stars have been able to pull ahead of the Metro Stars. Not to take any thing away form the Metro Stars they are still fighting and hanging in there. There is still lot of game that is to be played here so no way should the Minnesota Stars lie down and quit.

Both teams have been doing a lot of substituting here mid way through the second half. They are doing this substituting because they want to stay fresh.

This game has kind of gotten away from the Metro Stars. With 7:00 left to go the score is now 42-27. Both teams are still fighting and going after each other. The shots for the Metro Stars were not falling for the Metro Stars for a period in the second half. The Minnesota Stars are running the fast break to perfection. They are making basket after basket. Pride You is going to have to make some long strides to get back into this game. Being down 24-9 with 8:55 left to go in the first half is big. You don’t want any team to get to down or to high on them self’s

As the second half gets underway The Minnesota Stars come out firing on all cylinders. This game has really gotten away from The Pride Youth. Most of the players are tired. MINNESOTA STARS TAKING ON THE NET MASTERS

16U

The Minnesota Stars are taking on The Netmasters. From what I can tell by the roster that is provided is the players from The Netmasters are from Rochester, Kenyon-Wanamingo, Triton Farmington and Goodhue. Those cities are located in the southern part of the state.

This game has gone back and forth from the beginning. Both teams are playing aggressively both teams are playing well. The Minnesota Stars are head at the half by the score of 24-12.

In the start of the second half the Minnesota Stars have taken control of this game. They have gotten out of the gates fast and they are making the shots that they are putting up. The Netmasters have no one on the bench they only have five players for this game. It is very hard for the Netmasters to stay interested in this game because they are down by so much. The coaches are trying to instill a positive attitude in the team and keep playing hard. Because the point spread is so large the game officials have decided to have running time the rest of the game. The Minnesota Stars have just dominated this game tonight from start to finish. With 7:25 left to go in the game the score is 43-20. The Netmasters can’t hang their head on this performance they played well but The Minnesota Stars just took it to The Netmasters right from the start tonight. The final of the game was The Minnesota Stars 51 and The Netmasters 28.

MINNESOTA SUNS VS IOWA SELECT

17U

The Iowa Select are taking on Minnesota Suns. Both teams are playing well to start off the game. Both teams are putting up good shots and getting on the ground going after loose balls. This is a tight game. In the beginning of this game both teams are fighting very hard it is a very intense game to start the first half. Iowa Select has come out with an early lead in this game. With 7:21 left in the first half the score is Minnesota Suns 9 and Iowa Select 15. Both teams are playing very well and it is tide at 19 with 3:30 left to go in the half. Both teams are really well through out this first half. Both teams are hitting there shots and they are both hitting a combination of jump shots and lay ups. This game will be interesting to see how this one comes out.

At half time the Iowa Select are up by the score of 21-24.

Coming out of the half time The Iowa Select team game out ready to play they went on a run to start the second half. With 13:00 left in the game it is The Iowa Select 33 and the Minnesota Suns 24. The Iowa Select made a run in the start of the second half and they never looked up. They went on a tear and they were up and they didn’t look back. I think that the run the Minnesota Suns were caught off guard by how good this Iowa Select team is. The Minnesota Suns are fighting there way back into this one. The Minnesota Suns are now starting to hit some shots and making kind of a come back with 11:21 left the score is now 36-27.

Both teams are looking to make their runs in the second half. The suns are trying to make a come back here but The Iowa Select will not let that happen to them. In a game that seemed that it was not going to get over quick enough The Iowa Select beat the Minnesota Suns by the final of 52-37.

TRIPPLE THREAT VS TEAM WISCONSIN

16U

Triple Threat is taking on Team Wisconsin in the 7th game for me today. In the beginning of this game Team Wisconsin had come out of this game on fire they have gotten a big lead over This Triple Threat team. Team Wisconsin is playing tough hard man to man defense and Triple Threat is not able to handle there defense. Both teams are looking to shoot the ball. In the first half of this game both teams are looking to both walk and run the ball up the court on defense. Both teams will look for there fast break options and they both take advantage of them. There have been some wide open looks at the basket on a driving lay up because the defense could not recover on there end. This game has been wide open from the beginning this Team Wisconsin team has taken advantage of Triple Threats weakness. Team Wisconsin has been up the whole game they have been making strong smart passes and making plays they have played better on the offence end of the floor in the first half. At the half time the score is Team Wisconsin 26 and Triple Threat 12.

Team Wisconsin has come out in the second half ready to play. I smell a since of urgency of putting this Triple Threat team away. They are playing really hard and they are getting on the floor and fighting for every loose ball. Team Wisconsin has dropped back in a half court defense. This game has out of hand with 8:30 left in the game the score is Team Wisconsin 39-20. With the score the way it is now the officials of this game have made this game be running time the rest of the game.

In a game that had a very large scoring spread Team Wisconsin beat Triple Threat by the final score of 53-29. Both teams played very well but Team Wisconsin was just way to over powering for Triple Threat.

North Tartan vs. P.R.I.D.E. Youth

The Pride Youth is taking on North Tartan in the 16U age division. The Pride Youth program is coached by Rob Gooding. Rob Gooding was an assistant coach for the Minneapolis Washburn when I went to high school there a few years ago. He has started his own AAU program. As with all of the North Tartan teams North Tartan is based of the Tartan

This game is taking on a fast start. Both teams are pushing the ball up the court and they are both making there shots. The Pride Youth are in a zone defense and North Tartan is playing both man to man and zone. Mid way through the first half both teams are playing hard but North Tartan is ahead of The Pride Youth by 10 with the score of 19-9 with 7:00 left in the first half. The Pride Youth team is not going to give up. The first half has seen a mix of both zone and man to man coverage on by both teams. In the first half it seems like this North Tartan team has just been able to find there grove and they are just hitting their shots. We will have to wait and see what happens in the second half.

At half time the score is North Tartan 26 and Pride Youth 12

At the start of the second half North Tartan comes out and just attacks this Pride Youth team. They are playing half court defense but they are just trying to put the hammer down on this Pride Youth team. Even though Pride Youth is down by 20 points with 10:30 left 16-36 they are fighting and playing very well. Pride Youth Team just won’t quit. The girls from North Tartan are much bigger and quicker then the girls from Pride Youth. But you have to give the girls from Pride youth some credit because they are sticking in there and they are not quitting. In a game that had big margins North Tartan ends up beating Pride Youth by the final of 65-30.
