KACZROWSKI GOES TO ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS IN THE 26TH ROUND

Recent Hamline graduate Dan Kaczrowski (SS, St. Anthony, Minn.) was the 786th pick overall in the 2009 MLB draft, as the Arizona Diamondbacks chose him in the 26th round on Wednesday.

He hit .286 in 12 games with the Saints, knocking in five runs with a double and a home run.

"What Dan has accomplished is pretty remarkable. It's a compliment to his hard work and his family's support," said Hamline head coach and Saints pitching coach Jason Verdugo.

Verdugo adds, "He worked hard and learned from his mentors, not just his coaches but his teammates like Andrew Bennett (2008 Hamline graduate and current Saints infielder). This is great for both the MIAC and Hamline."

Kaczrowski ended his collegiate career on both the All-MIAC and the American Baseball Coaches Association Division III All-Midwest Region first teams. En route to earning those honors, he hit .463 in MIAC play (20 games).

Also in conference play this season, he produced a slugging percentage of .612 and an on base percentage of .513. Kaczrowski was 15-for-15 in stolen bases against conference opponents and scored a team-high 22 runs in MIAC play.

While leading the Pipers to their second straight MIAC playoff appearance and third in four years, Kaczrowski led the conference in stolen bases and steal attempts. He was in the top ten in MIAC statistics in batting average (fourth), on base percentage (sixth), runs scored (third), and hits (third).

Overall in 2009 he led the team with a .393 batting average and had 26 RBI while hitting ten doubles and a team-high four home runs. He struck out just five times in 150 at bats and drew a team-high 21 walks.

Kaczrowski was 23-for-23 in stolen bases and had streak of 27 stolen bases extending into the end of the 2008 season - ending his career with one of the top ten active stolen base streaks in all of NCAA baseball.

Additionally, he led the team with an overall slugging percentage of .540 and an on base percentage of .478.

Kaczrowski joins Saints teammate RHP Tanner Scheppers in the 2009 draft class. Scheppers, a former standout at Fresno State, was picked 44th overall yesterday by the Texas Rangers.

PIPERS SWEEP SCOTS IN BASEBALL

The two teams entered the game with identical overall and conference records, but after a sweep by scores of 8-4 and 5-1 over Macalester College, the Hamline University baseball team continues to stay near the top of the MIAC standings.

Macalester opened the first game with a five-hit, four-run first inning, as they led off with a pair of singles and a pair of doubles.

Brett Bugielski (Fy., River Falls, Wis.) took over the Piper pitching duties in the second inning and Hamline’s offense took over the scoreboard in the third.

Tres Humerickhouse (So., Farmington, Minn.) helped the Pipers take advantage of two Macalester errors by knocking in three runs with a triple. J.D. Modrynski (So., Lakeville, Minn.) added an RBI single later in the inning to tie the game at 4-4.

The Pipers added a pair of runs in the fourth on a Macalester error followed by an RBI-double from Dan Kaczrowski (Sr., St. Anthony, Minn.) and a sacrifice fly from Lincoln Hughes (Jr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.).

Hamline added another pair in the sixth as Bill Sand (Sr., White Bear Townshipship, Minn.) drive in two runs on a single. The Pipers tallied two hits in that inning as the Scots committed their fourth error of the game for the final 8-4 score.

Bugielski earned the win and upped his record to 5-1 as he threw the remaining six innings of the game. He struck out three batters and scattered three hits. James Murrey (Jr., Western Springs, Ill.) took the loss on the mound for Macalester, giving up five hits and striking out three batters.

Humerickhouse was 1-for-3 with a walk in getting the three RBI and scoring two runs. Kaczrowski was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in the opener.

In game two it was the Pipers who struck first, scoring a run in the bottom of the opening inning. Macalester tied the game with a single run in the third.

The Pipers then scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead. They continued to build on their lead in the sixth. With two outs and runners on first and second, the Scots intentionally walked Kaczrowski to load the bases for Tony Rogers (So., St. Michael, Minn.). Rogers stepped up and drove in two runs with a double to the gap in left center for the 5-1 Hamline win.

Kaczrowski was 3-for-3 with two runs scored in game two to finish the day 5-for-7 at the plate. Rogers and Hughes both went 2-for-4 as they tallied all of the RBI for the team. Rogers had two RBI and Hughes drove in the other three Piper runs.

Matt Mullendore (So., Amery, Wis.) threw a four-hit complete game on the mound for the Pipers in game two, upping his record to 5-3 as he fanned five Scots and walked just one.

With just over a week remaining in the regular season, Hamline improves to 19-15, 10-6 MIAC and remains in the top four in the standings with the two-game sweep. The Scots are now at 17-17, 8-8 MIAC. The Pipers now head to Northfield on Wednesday, April 29, to take on St. Olaf at 2:30 p.m.

KACZROWSKI EARNS PRESEASON D3BASEBALL.COM ALL-AMERICAN HONOR

Piper senior shortstop Dan Kaczrowski (St. Anthony, Minn.) continued to collect national honors this weekend, being named to the D3baseball.com Preseason All-American second team. Kaczrowski was the lone MIAC player to receive D3baseball.com Preseason All-American recognition.

Earlier in the week, he was included in the 2009 NCAA Division III Players to Watch in Collegiate Baseball chosen by NCAA Division III baseball coaches across the country. Kaczrowski was one of just 11 MIAC players recognized on that list of 301 players.

Last spring, Kaczrowski was the 2008 MIAC Co-Player of the Year, the MIAC hitter of the week for the week ending on April 21, and earned D3baseball.com third team All-American honors. He was also named to the first team ABCA/Rawlings All-Region team.

Kaczrowski tore through conference pitching, hitting .500 against MIAC opponents with 18 RBI and 24 runs scored. He hit nine doubles, one triple and four homeruns in 2008. Overall in 2008, Kaczrowski hit .477 to lead the Pipers, with 40 RBI and 54 runs scored.

Over the summer, he lit up the Central Illinois Collegiate League (CICL) while playing for the Danville Dans. Kaczrowski concluded his season in Illinois by being named the Mike Schmidt Player of the Year for the CICL. After bringing home the first half MVP award in the CICL, Kaczrowski book-ended that by winning the second half MVP honor, which led to him being named the league’s player of the year. The honor comes after a record-setting summer for the shortstop in a league typically dominated by Division I players.

Kaczrowski hit .389 for the Dans this summer and his 79 hits broke the 33-year old record for hits in a single season. The previous record of 77 hits had stood at the top of the record books since 1975. His next-closest competition for the batting title hit .324.

The Pipers will open the 2009 season on Tuesday, February 10 against North Central. The two teams will play a 6:00 p.m. double-header at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
