The Hamline University women’s hockey team battled until the bitter end, forcing the #7-ranked University of St. Thomas to earn their 3-2 win in overtime on Saturday night.
The scoreboard lit up three times in the final four minutes of the opening period, starting with an unassisted breakaway goal by BriannaMiller (Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) while the teams were skating 4-on-4. Hereighth goal of the season came at 16:01.
The Tommies evened the score at 1-1 with a goal from Kelly Fallen (So.,Plymouth, Minn.) at 18:51. Jackie Carroll (Sr., Saint Paul, Minn.) and Marie Omann (Jr., Cold Spring, Minn.) were credited with the assists.
Hamline then went on a power play with 48 seconds remaining in the period, and capitalized almost immediately, as Kate Raasch (Sr., Saint Paul, Minn.) scored at 19:21. Sophie Davidson (Jr., Saint Paul, Minn.) and Brianna Miller earned the assists.
Only one goal was scored in the second period, as St. Thomas tied the game at 7:05. Jamie Tiede (Fy., Sioux Falls, S.D.) took a pass from Taylor Schluter (Fy., Mound, Minn.) and pulled Piper goalie Amanda Plumm(So., Lake Elmo, Minn.) out of the goal on the one-on-one. The puck slid around Plumm, and Tiede followed it in for the score.
The third period found Plumm to be very busy, as she fought off 19 St.Thomas shots, including seven while the Tommies were on a minute and a half 5-on-3 advantage. St. Thomas out shot the Pipers 19-1 in the period,while the Pipers had out shot the Tommies 17-to-16 through the opening 40minutes.
The Tommies’ winning goal came at 2:45 in overtime, as Schluter scored from Tiede.
Hamline’s record now stands at 6-12-1, 2-9-1 MIAC after the conference loss. The Tommies improve to 13-3-1, 10-1-1 MIAC. Hamline will travel to Augsburg College on Friday, February 6, for a 7:05 p.m. puck drop.
