LAWSUIT POSTPONES RELEASE OF WIAA PLAYOFF PAIRINGS

From The Associated Press

The association that oversees Wisconsin high school sports has pushed back the release of the 224-team football playoff field because of a legal challenge by one team.

The field was to be announced Friday, but the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association now plans to release it Monday.

The challenge comes from Shorewood/Milwaukee Messmer. WIAA had ruled the team ineligible because it's in the fourth and final year of a playoff ban on teams that drop out of their conferences.

A Wisconsin State Journal report says Shorewood/Messmer left the Woodland Conference in 2007.

The school argues it should be eligible because it joined the Midwest Classic Conference this season.

Because a judge won't rule until Monday, WIAA postponed releasing its pairings rather than face the possibility of making retroactive changes.
