SAINT MARY’S WENT UP AGAINST AUGSBURG UNIVERSITY IN A MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME

On Feb. 5, Saint Mary’s and Augsburg University went up against each other in a men’s basketball game. Going into the game Saint Mary’s had a record of 10-9 while Augsburg’s record was 14-5. 

Saint Mary won the toss. They looked to set the tempo early on the offensive end. Saint Mary’s looked to push the ball down the floor and score layups in transition. 

Augsburg started the game in a zone defense. They made Saint Mary’s pass the ball around the 3-point line and take time off the clock. 

Augsburg also looked to score layups in transition. 

Saint Mary’s Kevin Gleason looked to come up with mid-range jump shots and layups in the first half. If Gleason didn’t think that he had a good shot, he would pass it off to one of his teammates. 

Saint Mary’s passed the ball around the 3-point line getting everyone involved in the offense. They did a good job of communicating with each other on both ends of the floor. 

Augsburg’s Booker Coplin came up with 3-point shots. He also was able to come up with mid-range jump shots and layups. 

Saint Mary’s shot started to fall with just over 14:00 left in the first half. Saint Mary’s Sawyer Rosener got hot from behind the 3-point line as he stepped up and knocked down shots. 

Saint Mary’s head coach Joe Fano received a technical foul with just over 12:00 left to go in the first half. 

Augsburg’s Matt Carik came up with mid-range jump shots and layups in the first half. He took the ball strong to the basket. He wasn’t afraid to take the ball strong to the basket. Carik was able to get past the defense.

Coplin came off screens and was able to knock down deep 3-point shots in the second half. He also knew where his teammates were on the floor. 

Saint Mary’s called a timeout with 8:23 left in the first half. The score was Augsburg 30, Saint Mary’s 26. 

After the timeout, Augsburg continued to move the ball down the floor and come up with shots. 

Saint Mary’s Kareem Anthony-Bello came up with a two-handed slam on the offensive end. That gave his teammates energy.

Augsburg got everyone involved in the offense. They were able to pass the ball around to each other on the offensive end. 

Augsburg wasn’t afraid to take deep 3-point shots. Everyone on the floor went after the ball on both ends of the floor. 

Augsburg’s James Streeter came up with deep 3-point shots and jump shots in the first half. Teammate Joe Palmer came off screens and came up with layups in the paint. 

At halftime, the score was Augsburg 46, Saint Mary’s 36.

As the second half got underway Augsburg looked to get the ball into the hands of Coplin, Duncan, Matt Carik and Palmer. All of whom came up with shots. 

Saint Mary’s Sawyer Rosner and Eli Cave came up with mid-range jump shots and layups for their team. 

Duncan came up with some nice plays around the rim. 

Saint Mary’s started the second half in a zone defense. That made Augsburg take a lot of time off the shot clock. 

Saint Mary’s Raheem Anthony came up with mid-range jump shots and layups. He picked up his third foul with 13:56 left in regulation. 

Streeter came up with layups in the paint. He called for the ball in the paint and came up with it. He took the ball strong to the basket in traffic.

Carik came up with 3-point shots throughout the second half. He also continued to get his teammates involved in the offensive plays as well. 

Augsburg called a timeout with 8:25 left in regulation. The score was Augsburg 74, Saint Mary’s 62.

Both teams dove on the floor after loose balls and went after rebounds on both ends of the floor.

Carik and Coplin both came up with shots in the second half. The defense couldn’t slow them down. 

Saint Mary’s called a timeout with 4:35 left in regulation. The score was Augsburg 83, Saint Mary’s 69.

Saint Mary’s continued to attack the basket and looked for their shots late in the game. They could not, however, come up with shots late in the game. Anthony came up big late in the game. The defense had a hard time slowing him down. 

Both teams played well and hard throughout the game. Saint Mary’s struggled shooting the ball throughout the second half. Even though they struggled shooting the ball they kept on shooting the ball throughout the game. 

Augsburg came away with the 95-80 victory over Saint Mary’s. 

The leading scorers for Saint Mary’s were Anthony with 29 points and Cave with 25 points. 

The leading scorers for Augsburg were Carik with 22 points, Mitchell with 21 points, and Streeter with 16 points.
