THE GOPHERS COME BACK AGAINST A VERY AGGRESSIVE CORNELL TEAM AND REMAINS UNDEFEATED

The Minnesota Golden Gophers are taking on the Big Red, in a Saturday afternoon match up at Williams Arena. The Gophers are 7-0 coming into today's contest. Cornell enters today's game with a 4-4 record. This year's Gopher team has one of their best starts in many years. The best start to the Gophers have had was an 11-0 start to a season. That came in the 1976-1977 season.

One of the players that are on this Cornell University team is Ryan Wittman He is the son of Randy Wittman.

As this game gets underway here this afternoon, it is a lot warmer inside than it is outside. Everyone is standing at the start of this game.

Both of these teams are coming out ready to play. The Gophers are looking to push the ball up the court to begin this game. The Gophers are playing a strong man to man defense. The Gopher have warmed up, and they have been able to go on a run.

Cornell is looking to push the ball up the court. The Gophers are playing a tough defense so far. With 15:57 left to go in the first half, there is a media time out and the score is tied at 8 each.

The Gophers are really playing good strong basketball. They are taking their time on the defensive end. This game has gone back and forth. Cornell has also played well. Ralph Sampson has just come down and made a nice two handed slam dunk and has gotten a nice applause from the crowd.


With 11:42, the score is Minnesota 15 and Cornell 13.

The Gophers are looking to swing the ball out side around the perimeter. There is a loose ball on the floor and all 10 players dive on the ground. It is a big scrum and it's a jump ball. The Gophers get the ball back. Jamal Abu-Shamala has just come down and hit a deep three point basket.

Both of these teams are trading baskets. There has been an even pace to this game. This game could go either way. Both teams are going to have to fight to get back into this game. The Gophers are getting tested. This Cornell team is really putting it to the Gophers today.


This has been a physical game. Both teams are getting after it. Ryan Wittman is playing. He has made some moves here.

Cornell is playing very good on both ends of the court. They have gone a run. Ryan Wittman has played well, in the first half. He has been able to get his shot off. Jonathan Williams has gotten into the game. This is the first game that he has played in because he has been injured the whole start of the season.

At half time, the score is Cornell 40 and Minnesota 28.

We will have to see if the Minnesota Gophers can get back into this game. Both teams are fired up ready to get back to playing. The Gophers are pushing the ball up the court. They are trying to get into their offense. They were able to kind of do that in the first half but this Cornell team has been able to bother them just enough to have an impact on the Gophers.

Blake Hoffarber hit the floor hard and has been helped off the court by the medical staff. There was a no call that the officials missed, and Tubby Smith thought that there should have been a foul called but there wasn't.

Ryan Wittman has been able to get the Gophers in this game. The Gophers are not going to give up in this game. They are going on a mini run,and got the fans back into this game at Williams Arena. The fans are really going crazy this afternoon cheering on the Gophers, as they battle back against a good Cornell team. With 14:26 left to go in regulation, the score is Minnesota 38 and Cornell 46.

The Gophers have been on a run and have gotten back into this game. We will have to see if it works. They are going to have to make some stops. All of the Gophers that are on the bench are standing and cheering on their teammates, as this game has gotten very close.

With 12:12 left to go in regulation, the score is Minnesota 44 and Cornell 46.

This game has a good tempo going in it. The Gophers can beat this Cornell team. There is still a lot of time left to go in this game. The Gophers have to be patient and the game comes to them. Al Nolen has played well today. He is the Gophers floor general. He has done a lot of good things today.

The Gophers have a 49-48 lead, with 8:50 left to go in regulation.

The Gophers have to play their style of basketball. They can't let Cornell dictate the outcome of this game. They have to keep playing good basketball, which they have done here so far.

Lawrence Westbrook has just come down and nailed a three point shot. With 7:10 left to go in regulation, the score is Minnesota 54 and Cornell 48.

The Gophers can't lose control here in the second half, which has seemed to drag on. They continue to play tough hard defense. This crowd at the Barn is really going crazy. They are screaming and really cheering these Gophers on. The Gophers have decided to press. They are trying to make the Big Red players flustered.

Minnesota takes a: 30 second time out ,with the score Minnesota 58 and Cornell 51.

Lawrence Westbrook has just come down and nailed a three pointer. With 3:49 left to go in regulation, the score is Minnesota 61 and Cornell 51.

Al Nolen Jr has fouled out of the game. He will leave the contest with 7 points in a well played game. Travis Busch has replaced Al Nolen Jr, who has fouled out.

Lawrence Westbrook has just come up with another good shot. He, along with the whole Gopher team, has really played well here in the second half. They found a way to come away with the victory this afternoon.

You have to give a lot of credit to this Cornell team, who has really tested the Gophers. They have played well today.

The Gophers have played wonderful in this game, and they have come away with the victory today.


The leading scorers for Minnesota today were: Lawrence Westbrook with 17 points, Damian Johnson with 11 points, and Ralph Sampson with 10 points.

Cornell was not able to hit a three point shot in the second half. They were 0-13 from three point land in the second half. They were lead by Ryan Wittman.

With this win the Minnesota Gophers are now 8-0
