ST. PAUL CENTRAL AND MINNEAPOLIS WASHBURN SQUARE OFF IN FRESHMAN TWIN CITIES BOYS’ BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

St. Paul Central freshman won the St. Paul City Conference regular season title. They went up against Minneapolis Washburn who won the Minneapolis freshman title. The two teams went up against each other at St. Paul Johnson to determine the winner of the Twin Cities Championship.

As the game got underway both teams struggled shooting the ball. Washburn looked to push the ball from the start. They looked to get out and run and control tempo from the beginning of the game. On the offensive end they used a motion offence. They wanted to swing the ball around the three-point circle and try to look for the open shots.

Central used a 2-3 zone. They wanted Washburn to spread the floor out and use a balanced attack.

The score was close throughout the first half. Neither team was able to make a run. The defense was very solid between the two teams throughout the first half.

Central went on a run late in the half. There was nothing that Washburn could do.

Central used both man-to-man and zone defense. Washburn used mostly man-to-man defense. It was interesting to see what defense would be used in the second half.

At halftime the score was Central 23 and Washburn 20.

As the second half got underway Washburn came out firing on all cylinders. The score was tied at 25 with 14:20 left in the second half.

Both teams played very aggressively throughout the game. Both teams shared the ball. Not one person did all of the scoring for either team.

The score went back and forth. Neither team was able to go on a run. Each team played extremely well on the defensive end.

The zone defense worked for Central. They used mostly a 2 3 zone in the second half. They were able to spread Washburn out and that made it harder for them to shoot the ball.

The score went back and forth throughout the second half. Washburn did make a run late in the game. With 3:09 left in regulation the score; Washburn 48 and Central 40.

Washburn pulled way in the end of the second half. Central continued to play very tough and the game came down to the wire. But in the end Washburn was able to come away with the 60-45 victory over Central.
