MINNEAPOLIS SOUTH TOOK ON WAYZATA IN A BOYS BASKETBALL GAME

On Dec. 21, Minneapolis South went up against Wayzata in non-conference boys basketball game.  
 
South started the game playing man-to-man defense. Wayzata also started in man-to-man.  
 
Wayzata did a good job of swinging the ball around the three-point line as they looked to take time off the clock and get into an offensive set.
 
Troy Louwagie for Wayzata did a good job of getting offensive rebounds. He was also able to make layups. Louwagie played mostly on the low block.
 
The score went back and forth early. Neither team went on a run. Both teams’ defenses made it difficult for the other team to get open looks at the basket.
 
Wayzata did a good job getting the ball down the floor in transition. They were not afraid to push the ball down the floor. South however was able to keep pace with Wayzata as they were able to stop the fast breaks.
 
Wayzata called a timeout with 11:03 left in the first half. The score was South 19, Wayzata 13.
 
Both teams continued to attack the basket in the first half.
 
Wayzata’s Johnny Beeninga was able to make baskets from within the three-point line. If he thought that he had a good shot Beeninga was not afraid to shoot it.
 
There were many ties and lead changes the last 3:00 of the first half.  
 
Neither team went on a run in the first half. The score at halftime was Wayzata 43, South 34.
 
As the second half got underway Ty Grlinske stepped up and nailed a deep three-point shot for Wayzata that  lifted his team’s confidence.
 
South’s Romeo Barber stepped up and was able to sink jump shots in the second half. He had good court awareness and called for the ball when he thought that he had a good shot.
 
South’s Kenley Farrow was able to hit jump shots and layups throughout the contest. His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball in spots where he could do it.
 
South called a timeout with 14:21 left in regulation. The score was Wayzata 53, South 40.
 
Brendan Broady for Wayzata got hot in the second half as he stepped behind the three-point line and was able to hit three-point shots from behind the arch. 
 
Beeninga continued to hit shots in the second half for Wayzata. His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball in spots where he felt comfortable shooting it.
 
South’s offense went cold midway through the second half. They couldn’t get a shot off as they turned it over and gave Wayzata the ball.
 
Both teams played hard throughout the game. Wayzata was able use their size to their advantage in the second half, also they were able to come up with some big shots down the stretch.
 
Wayzata came away with the 85-78 victory over South.
 
The leading scorers for South were Farrow with 26 points and Barber with 13 points. The leading scorers for Wayzata were Johnny Beeninga with 21, Broady with 15, Will Beeninga with 14 and Louwagie with 12 points.
