HOPKINS HOSTED MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST IN A REGIONAL FOOTBALL PLAYOFF CONTEST

On a cold and blustery night in late October, the Hopkins Royals hosted the Minneapolis Southwest Lakers in a regional football playoff contest. Hopkins came into the game with a 5-3 record and was seeded 3 in the region. Southwest came into the game with a 6-2 record and were seeded 6 in the region. This was the first meeting of these two teams this season.

Southwest kicked off to Hopkins to begin the game. Hopkins started with the ball on the 34-yard line. Hopkins got a first down on the first play of the game. They were looking to run the ball early in the game. Billy Gregg got a 10-yard touchdown with 9:47 left to go in the first quarter. The extra point attempt was no good.


With 9:47 left in the first quarter the score was Hopkins 6 and Southwest 0.


Southwest got the ball back after the Hopkins touchdown. Southwest kept the ball on the ground in the early part of the first quarter. Southwest had to punt the ball back to Hopkins because Southwest couldn’t convert on fourth down.


Hopkins got the ball back. Dami Mafe got the ball for Hopkins. Hopkins was able to grind out a first down. They were successful on short drives. Southwest was not able to slow Hopkins down late in the first quarter. Trevon Smith came up with a few good runs for Hopkins to set up a touchdown by Billy Gregg with 3:15 left to go in the first quarter. The two-point conversion was no good.


With 3:15 left to go in the first quarter the score was Hopkins 12 and Southwest 0.


Hopkins kicked off to Southwest after the Hopkins touchdown. Southwest got the ball into running back Evan Gray’s hands. Southwest was not able to come up with a first down. So they had to punt the ball back to Hopkins.


Hopkins fumbled the ball and Southwest was able to come up with it.


At the end of the first quarter the score was Hopkins 12 and Southwest 0.


Southwest got the ball to begin the second quarter. Aryton Scott was able to hook up with Evan Gray for a few nice receptions. Southwest fumbled the ball back to Hopkins and then on the next play Hopkins fumbled the ball and Southwest got the ball back.


Southwest’s Aryron Scott ran a 22-yard touchdown with 9:55 left to go in the second quarter. The two-point conversion was no good.


With 9:55 left to go in the second quarter the score was Hopkins 12 and Southwest 6.


Southwest kicked off to Hopkins after the touchdown. Hopkins continued to keep the ball on the ground. Andre Travaris McDonald of Hopkins got a nice reception. Hopkins marched down the field. Southwest’s defense came up big and they were able to stop the Hopkins offense. They had to kick the ball back to Southwest with 4:56 left to go in the second quarter.


Southwest got the ball back but they were picked off by Hopkins’ Ben Christopher on the 25-yard line. Hopkins turned the ball over to Southwest late in the quarter. Rodney Pierce Tyler came up big for Southwest in a 42-yard touchdown reception. The extra point attempt was good.


With 30.3 seconds the score was Southwest 13 and Hopkins 12.


At halftime the score was Hopkins 12 and Southwest 13.


Southwest got the ball to begin the third quarter. They looked to air it out to begin the third quarter. They were not able to convert on fourth down and they had to kick the ball back to Hopkins.


Hopkins got the ball back and they looked to air the ball out. Dami Mafe picked up a big reception to bring Hopkins into the red zone. Andre McDonald came up with a 6-yard touchdown reception.


With 8:39 left to go in the third quarter the score was Hopkins 18 and Southwest 13.


Southwest got the ball after the Hopkins touchdown. Southwest went on it on fourth down but they were not able to convert. Hopkins got the ball back on the turnover.


Hopkins got the ball on their 41-yard line. Andre McDonald came up with a big touchdown run. With 6:46 left to go in the third quarter. The two-point conversion was good.


With 6:46 left to go in the third quarter the score was Hopkins 26 and Southwest 13.


Hopkins kicked the ball off to Southwest after the touchdown but Southwest fumbled the ball and Hopkins came up with the ball.


With 6:43 left to go in the third quarter Southwest’s Daniel Obermiller was injured on a play. He was helped off the field by the Southwest coaches.


Hopkins looked to score again. Andre McDonald came up with another big touchdown reception with 5:43 left in the third quarter. The extra point attempt was good. With 5:43 left to go in the third quarter the score was Hopkins 33 and Southwest 13.


Hopkins kicked off to Southwest after the touchdown. Hopkins got the ball near midfield. They looked toward the end zone late in the quarter. Hopkins was not able to convert on fourth down on their one-yard line and they turned the ball over to Southwest.


At the end of the third quarter the score was Hopkins 33 and Southwest 13.


Southwest got the ball to begin the fourth quarter. Southwest was not able to convert on fourth down and they had to punt the ball back to Hopkins.


With 10:30 left in the fourth quarter Hopkins Dami Mafe scored a 5-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion was good. With 10:30 left to go in the fourth quarter the score was Hopkins 41 and Southwest 13.


Southwest got the ball back after the Hopkins touchdown. Southwest wanted to look to score late in the fourth quarter. They were not able to convert on fourth down and they gave the ball back to Hopkins.


Hopkins got the ball back after the turnover on downs. They kept the ball on the ground and they wanted to march down the field to try to score again. Michal Moore scored a touchdown with 3:24 left to go in the game. The extra point was attempt was no good.


I thought that Hopkins’ Andre Travaris McDonald played very well. He came up big in the third quarter with three touchdowns. He knew what he was doing on the offensive end and he really played well.


Hopkins came away with the 47-13 victory over Minneapolis Southwest.
