The first game of the 2009 Minnesota State Boys’ Basketball High School Tournament features the Hopkins Royals going up against the Blaine Bangles. Coming into the State Tournament Hopkins had a record of 28-0. Blaine had a record of 15-14.
Blaine has to control the tempo of the game from the get go. Hopkins is a team that looks to score in transition. If Blaine can slow the tempo down they have a chance in this game. They looked to spread the floor and really chew time off of the clock.
Mike Broghhammer has really looked good in the first half. He has played really aggressively in the low block. He has really has a nice touch from the inside block.
Blaine had a tough time finding the basket in the game. They made their first basket just under the 10 minute mark in the first half.
Hopkins continued to look to push the ball up the court the first half. Even though they pushed the ball up the court they took control of the clock and the ball in the first half they did get the ball up the court quickly.
In an action packed first half the score was Hopkins 44 and Blaine 13. For Hopkins Raymond Cowles has the leading scorer with 11 points in the first half.
Hopkins remained in control in the second half. They are on a mission for perfection. They want to come away with the championship and they will play as best as they can and score as many points as possible as they can in order to do that.
As Hopkins continued to roll in the quarterfinal game Kenny Novak Jr continued to play his top 12 players. He wanted to send a message to not only to his players but to everyone who watched the game. He wanted to let people know that there only goal was to win the state championship. He did that with the victory. His kids played hard they played with a purpose. They also had on their mind that they wanted the state championship.
The final score of the contest was Hopkins 68 and Blaine 26. The leading scorers for Jesse Briggity and Dylan Rodgiguez with 10 points each.
