WEEKEND MELEE AT ST. PAUL SCHOOL RESULTS IN ARREST

ANTHONY LONETREE FROM THE MINNEAPOLIS STAR TRIBUNE REPORTS

St. Paul police arrested a student for possession of a stolen firearm and ticketed a 17-year-old for disorderly conduct after a fight broke out Saturday at a showcase basketball game at Arlington High School.

The so-called "Twin City Game" pitted St. Paul Johnson against Minneapolis Washburn.

Police spokesman Pete Crum said today that the melee involved fans from the opposing sides, and required about 20 officers to quell. A chemical irritant was used, he said, and officers had to work to separate parents and children from the combatants.

An 18-year-old man who identified himself as a Highland Park High School student was arrested after a gun fell out of his waistband during a struggle with police, Crum said.

The student had not threatened anyone with the weapon, he added.

Crum said there were no reports of injuries.

Washburn defeated Johnson, 67-64.
