BETHEL WENT UP AGAINST AUGSBURG IN A MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME

On Feb 19, Bethel and Augsburg went up against each other in a men’s basketball game. Going into the game Bethel had a record of 15-8 while Augsburg’s record was 17-6.

Augsburg started the game in a zone defense and Bethel started the game in a zone defense. 

Bethel raced down the floor and got everyone involved in the offense. They passed the ball around the 3-point line. 

Bethel’s Chandler Wellman came up with mid-range jump shots and layups. He was able to get past the Augsburg’s defense. 

Augsburg started out slow offensively. They were not able to find their shots early. 

Bethel’s Jamel Davis looked to come up with mid-range jump shots and layups. 

Augsburg called a timeout with 17:08 left in the first half. The score was Bethel 13, Augsburg 2. 

The defensive pressure that Bethel applied made Augsburg swing the ball around the 3-point line and they also look to get the ball inside. 

Davis was all over the floor. On the offensive end, he was able to come up with mid-range jump shots and layups. He was also able to get his teammates the ball in spots where they could shoot it. 

Bethel moved the ball well on the offensive end. They did a good job of communicating with each other. 

Augsburg looked to score baskets in transition. Both teams raced up and down the floor looking for their shots. 

Augsburg’s Jack Sorenson came up with mid-range jump shots and layups. He helped fuel the offense. 

After a slow start offensively, Augsburg started hitting their shots with just under 12:00 to play in the first half. 

Sorenson stepped up and knocked down deep 3-point shots. His teammates got him the ball in spots where he could shoot it. 

Augsburg’s Isaiah Robinson kept coming up with mid-range jump shots and layups. He also was able to come off screens and was able to get to the basket.

Augsburg got within two points of Bethel with just under 9:45 left in the first half. 

Bethel’s Hudson Urbanus came off screens and came up with mid-range jump shots and layups. Teammate Isaiah Rollins also was able to slow down the guy he was guarding on the defensive end. 

 Augsburg picked up with defense at half court. Bethel was able to get into their offense effectively throughout the first half. 

Bethel wasn’t afraid to shoot deep 3-point shots. 

Coplin came up with big shots in the first half. His teammates were able to set him up so he could take good shots. 

Wellman kept coming up with shots in the first half. That kept the game close. 

There were multiple ties and lead changes in the first half. 

Sorenson got past the defense and made layups and jump shots from the paint. Coplin did the same thing late in the game. 

Bethel’s Isaiah Carver-Bagley came up with deep 3-point shots. He was all over the floor coming up with shots. Noah Whalen came with shots as well late in the first half. 

Augsburg’s Robinson came up with layups late that kept his team in the game. 

At halftime, the score was Augsburg 37, Bethel 35. 

As the second half got underway both teams continued to push the ball down the floor and looked for their shots. 

Davis continued to drive to the basket and looked to get his shot going. He was fouled and was able to knock down free throws. He picked up his third personal foul with 18:30 left in regulation. 

The score continued to go back and forth throughout the second half. 

Coplin kept on coming up with mid-range jump shots and layups throughout the second half. Robinson also kept on coming up with shots in the second half. 

Augsburg’s Jack Sorenson came off the bench and provided an offensive power as he looked to come up with shots coming off screens. 

There were multiple ties and lead changes throughout the second half. Neither team went on a run. 

Augsburg stayed in their zone defense in the second half. They made Bethel pass the ball around the 3-point line and take time off the 30-second shot clock. 

Wellman got to the basket and came up with layups off screens. He wasn’t afraid to take the ball strong to the basket. 

Bethel called a timeout with 13:11 left in regulation. The score was Augsburg 50, Bethel 48.

Augsburg’s Coplin and Sorenson both came up with big shots in the second half. They were the leadings on the floor as they let their teammates know where they were supposed to be on the court. 

Carver-Bagley stepped up and knocked down 3-point shots throughout the second half. 

The score continued to go back and forth midway through the second half. Neither team went on a significant run in the second half. 

Coplin kept making his shots on the offensive end. He kept on coming off screens and making shots. His teammates also kept on feeding him the ball in spots where he could shoot it.

Both teams stepped up their defensive pressure with under 7:00 minutes to go.

Bethel called a timeout with 5:49 left in regulation. The score was Bethel 64, Augsburg 60.

Bethel stepped up their offensive production and was able to come up with shots on the offensive end and stops on the defensive end. 

Bethel’s Jack Jenson stepped up and knocked down 3-point shots late in the game. 

Augsburg struggled shooting the ball after the 5:49 timeout. They came out of that timeout flat on the offensive end. 

Bethel stepped up their intensity late in the game. They came up with steals and layups on offense. 

Both teams played hard throughout the game. Bethel was able to knock down shots late in the second half. Augsburg struggled shooting the ball in the second half. 

Bethel came away with the 83-66 victory over Augsburg. 

The leading scorers for Augsburg were Booker with 30 points and Sorenson with 15 points. 

The leading scorers for Bethel were Wellman with 20 points, Jenson with 15 points, Kingland and Urbanus each with 14 points.

BETHEL WENT UP AGAINST THE UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS IN A MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME

On Feb. 18 Bethel and St. Thomas went up against each other in a men’s basketball game.

Bethel raced out to a quick 5-2 lead with 17 minutes left in the first half. St. Thomas didn’t panic however. They let the game come to them.

Bethel’s Bridgeport Tusler attacked the basket and came up with layups. His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball in spots where he could shoot it.

St. Thomas guard Grant Shaeffer came up with layups and mid-range jump shots. St. Thomas used a lot of time off the shot clock. Cortez Tillman also came up with 3-point shots for St. Thomas.

Both teams battled as the score went back and forth in the first half.

On the defensive end Tusler was able to slow down the guy he was guarding.

Bethel called a timeout with 9:25 left in the first half. The score was St. Thomas 17, Bethel 11.

St. Thomas seemed to have trouble passing the ball down the floor as they turned it over on long passes. Bethel’s defense created problems for St. Thomas. When St. Thomas turned it over, Bethel wasn’t able to convert on the offensive end.  

St. Thomas guard Marcus Alipate was able to take good mid-range jump shots. His teammates saw that he was able to knock down shots so they were able to get him the ball in the paint, where he made layups.

Bethel looked to the ball inside on back cuts. They were able to make layups off cuts. St. Thomas used multiple defenses as they wanted to confuse Bethel.

St. Thomas Cortez Tillman took the ball hard to the basket. He looked to consistently shoot layups and mid-range jump shots.

Bethel continued to make baskets. They wanted to cut into their deficit.

St. Thomas called a timeout with 1:56 left in the first half. The score was St. Thomas 29, Bethel 26.

Both teams attacked the basket late in the first half. But the defensive pressure didn’t let either team take clear shots.

At halftime the score was St. Thomas 34, Bethel 28.

Bethel looked to get the ball into the hands of Brycen Wojta.  Wojta who was open in the paint, came up with shots throughout the game.

Bethel came up with steals and was able to convert on the offensive end. That didn’t seem to faze St. Thomas to much as they kept attacking the basket looking for layups.

Bethel started taking 3-point shots. They struggled shooing the deep 3-point shots. They kept shooting it. St. Thomas came up with the rebounds however.

Bethel called a timeout with 15:48 left in regulation. The score was St. Thomas 41, Bethel 30.

Bethel continued to attack the basket and were able to cut into the deficit.

Bethel called a timeout with 12:23 in regulation. The score was St. Thomas 45, Bethel 36.

St. Thomas pushed the ball down the floor and made layups in transition. They were a little quicker than Bethel.

Tusler took the ball hard to the basket and came up with layups. Bethel came up with some huge shots and were able to slow down the St. Thomas offense.

Bethel got to within two points with 3:30 left in regulation at 52-50. Tusler got hot as he make shots that he put up from the paint.

The score get back and forth late in the game.

St. Thomas called a timeout with 1:18 left in regulation. The score was St. Thomas 57, Bethel 55.

The game was tied at 57 with 5.7 seconds left when St. Thomas called a timeout.

The game was tied at the end of regulation. There was a 5:00 overtime period.

As the overtime period got underway both teams continued to make baskets.

Bethel kept on looking to get the ball into the hands of Brycen Wojta, Tusler and Kyle Zimmermann.

They all came up with layups and mid-range jump shots.

The score went back and forth late in the game. Bethel came up with layups in the overtime period.

Bethel came away with the 71-65 victory over St. Thomas.

The leading scorers for St. Thomas were Nord with 16 points, Alipate 13 points, Saarela 10 points, Tillman with 9 points and Taylor Montero with 8 points.

The leading scorers for Bethel were Wojta with 24 points, Zimmermann with 16 points and Tusler with 14 points.

AUGSBURG WENT UP AGAINST BETHEL IN A MEN'S BASKETBALL GAME

Augsburg College traveled to Bethel University for a men's basketball game. Augsburg came into the game with a record of 11-5. Bethel had a record of 8-7.

It took a while for each team to get a feel for what the other one was going to do on the court. Bethel started out in a zone defense. Augsburg countered with half court man-to-man defense.

Augsburg's Andy Giesika-Grimm caught fire early. He made some nice jump shots for his team.

Bethel got the ball into the hands of Taylor Hall who scored the first four points of the game. Daniel
Baah also got hot and stepped up and knocked down shots.

Both teams traded baskets for a period of time.

The defensive pressure displayed by each team made it difficult for either of them to make easy baskets.

Augsburg's Cory Polta got his shot going midway through the first half. He was able to step up and make jump shots.

Bethel's John De Cleene came away with some nice offensive rebounds. He was able to get the ball to his guards who would set up plays for easy baskets.

Anthony Humphrey for Augsburg was all over the court. He would take his time on the offensive end and get his teammates involved in the plays. Humphrey was not afraid to shoot the ball from anywhere on the court. If he thought that it was not a good shot however Humphrey would pass it to his teammate.

David Weber for Augsburg got hot late in the first half. He was able to nail some jump shots.

At halftime the score was Augsburg 27 and Bethel 24.

Augsburg started the second half in a zone defense. They wanted to spread the Bethel defenders out and force them to take bad shots.

Augsburg did a good job of attacking the glass on the offensive end. The guards did a good job of getting the ball down the court and the whole team did a good job of moving without the ball.

Giesika-Grimm continued shoot the ball well in the second half. His teammates got him the ball where they thought he could hit shots.

Quinn Gorski for Bethel made a couple of nice fast break layups to keep his team in the game.

Augsburg called a timeout with 12:20 left in regulation. The score was Augsburg 41 and Bethel 37.

Taylor Hall for Bethel came up big for his team. He knocked down some big shots when his team looked for him to shoot. Hall made mostly jump shots and layups.

Humphrey did a good job of slowing down the guy that he was guarding. He didn't let many guys get by him when he was playing defense.

Neither team was able to go on a run in the second half. The game was close throughout the second half.

Baah and De Cleene found each other on the floor and Bahh made a nice pass to De Cleene who made a nice layup. They knew where each other were on the court.

Bethel went into a full court press with just under 7:30 left to go in regulation. They went on a run.

Augsburg walked the ball down the court and swung the ball around the three-point line.

Augsburg called a timeout with 5:39 left in regulation. The score was Bethel 57 and Augsburg 48.

Augsburg couldn't recover after Bethel went on their run with 7:30 left in regulation.

Bethel came away with the 72-55 victory over Augsburg.

The leading scorers for Augsburg were Tyler Schmidt with 19 points and Andy Grzesiak-Grimm and Cory Polta with 12 points each. Augsburg shot 18-50 from the field. That included going 8-20 from behind the three-point line. They were 11-16 from the free throw line. They brought down 32 total rebounds including 22 on the defensive end.

The leading scorers for Bethel were Daniel Baah with 21 points and Taylor Hall with 18 points. Bethel shot 28-57 from the field. That included going 4-12 from behind the three-point line. They were 12-18 from the free throw line. They brought down 32 total rebounds including 23 on the defensive end.

HAMLINE BEATS BETHEL IN WOMEN'S HOCKEY

A one-goal first period exploded to a final score of 5-2 as the visiting Bethel Royals defeated the Hamline University women’s hockey team in St. Paul on Friday night.

The first period of play saw just one goal put on the scoreboard, as Hamline’s Jessica Kraus (Fy., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) scored at 10:34. Erin Kastner (Fy., Fairbault, Minn.) and Jenna Scattarelli (Fy., Elk River, Minn.) earned the assists on the goal.

The second period also lacked scoring until over halfway through the period, and then saw four more scores added to the board in less than nine minutes. Bethel tied up the game at 11:19 as Olivia Paulseth (Fy., Duluth, Minn.) scored on the power play at 11:19 from Bethany Murphy-Aultman (Sr., Grand Rapids, Minn.).

The Royals then took their first lead of the game just a minute later as Paige Lemieux (Fy., Fargo, N.D.) put the puck in the net from Allison Papko (So., Winnipeg, Manitoba).

Hamline evened the score at 2-2, as Shannon Griswold (Jr., Portland, Ore.) lit the lamp at 15:23. Brianna Miller (Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) was credited with the assist.

The score stayed tied until 18:40 in the second when Sandra Felten (Sr, Cashton, Wis.) put the visiting Royals up, 3-2, on a power play score. Rachael Geng (Fy., South St. Paul, Minn.) and Anna Carlson (Fy., Roseville, Minn.) earned the assists on the goal.

Bethel went up 4-2 at 2:56 in the third when Kassy Sullivan (So., Roseville, Minn.) scored on a Papko’s second assist of the game. They scored their fifth and final goal of the game on a power play at 15:31 when Kelsea Martalock (So,. Tomah, Wis.) put the puck in the net. Murphy-Aultman and Paulseth were credited with the assists.

Hamline’s record is now 6-9-1, 2-6-1 MIAC with the conference loss. The Royals move to 6-6-3, 5-2-2 MIAC. The puck will drop between these same two teams in the second game of the series tomorrow, Saturday, January 24, at Bethel’s home rink in Blaine at 3:00 p.m.

BETHEL JV COMES BACK AND ENDS UP BEATING NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE

In the first game of the evening, it is the JV teams going at it. Northwestern Bible College is going up against Bethel. Bethel has started out pushing the ball up the court Northwestern got off to a good start. They are hitting their shots that they put up.

Bethel's (#3) has played well to start this game. He has made some good shots, and he is really playing strong. Bethel has been playing a strong man-to-man defense tonight. Both teams are playing really well, but they are still each trying to find their rhythm.

Northwestern looks to push the ball in the first half. They have been successful doing that so far. They are, also, play strong man-to-man defense.

Northwestern has opened up a little lead on Bethel. Both teams are looking to push the ball up the court in transition. We have reached half time. The score is Northwestern 35 and Bethel 27.

As the second half gets under way, both teams are coming out playing aggressively. They are playing smart and aggressive.

Nate Thompson has shown a good solid performance tonight. He has played well. He has made some nice moves around the basket.

Northwestern has decided not to press here for a couple of series. When Northwestern puts on the press, they are successful creating a little havoc.

Bethel has put on a little run, mid way through the second half. With 13:15 left to go in the game, the score is Northwestern 47 and Bethel 37.

Bethel is still fighting hard in this game. They are not going to give up in this contest. This game is going to come down to the end, as both teams are putting on a shooting clinic.

Northwestern has decided not to press again for a couple of series. Bethel on the other hand has put on their press. Bethel has come back, and now, has taken the lead here with 8:30 left to go in the game. The score is Bethel 49 and Northwestern 47.

Both teams are trading baskets. It is anyone's game at this point. Bethel's Daniel Baah has looked impressive. He has really had some nice moves with the ball. He has been able to shake off his defender, on a couple of different occasions. He has also been one of their vocal leaders in this game.

This game will come down to the end. It will come down to what teams can make more shots down the stretch. Both teams are playing very hard in this game. It has been a well fought out game. And with 1:15 left to go, it is Northwestern 57 and Bethel 61. Both teams are scrambling around and trying to come away with a victory. Northwestern has taken some quick 3 point shots near the end of this game to try to them back in to it. But in the end, Bethel JV ends up beating the Northwestern JV by the final of 64-59.
