MOUNDS VIEW WENT UP AGAINST CHAMPLIN PARK IN A BOYS’ BASKETBALL SECTION GAME

Mounds View and Champlin Park squared off in a boys’ basketball game. This game was a semifinal of the Section 5 Class 4A section tournament. The game was played at Maple Grove High School. 

Champlin Park moved the ball down the floor well early. They got everyone involved in the offense. 

Both teams dove on the floor after loose balls and went after rebounds. 

Champlin Park did a good job of getting everyone involved in the offense. They passed the ball around the 3-point line and took their time on the offensive end. 

The game was very physical. Both teams dove on the floor after loose balls and went after rebounds. 

Champlin Park’s McKinley Wright IV took the ball strong to the basket and came up with mid-range jump shots and layups. If he didn’t think that he had an open shot, he passed it off to one of his teammates. 

Champlin Park’s Theo John came up with layups and slam dunks on the offensive end. On the defensive end, John could slow the guy down that he was guarding. 

Mounds View called a timeout with 9:41 left in the first half. The score was Champlin Park 16, Mounds View 9. 

Mounds View walked the ball down the floor and looked to get their offense going. The defensive pressure that Champlin Park applied made it difficult for Mounds View to come up with an open shot. 

Wight used his quickness to get past the Mounds View defense. He could get his teammates involved in the offense. 

Mounds View called a timeout with 3:21 left in the first half. The score was Champlin Park 28, Mounds View 17.

Both offenses stalled late in the first half. The defensive pressure made it difficult for both teams to take open looks at the basket. 

At halftime, the score was Champlin Park 30, Mounds View 17.

As the second half got underway Champlin Park kept on feeding Hunter and Wright the ball. They both came up with huge baskets. 

Mounds View struggled to shoot the ball in the second half. They were not able to make shots that they put up. 

Champlin Park used their quickness to their advantage as they got to the basket and made shots. 

Mounds View called a timeout with 7:29 left in regulation. The score was Champlin Park 48, Mounds View 31.

The game was very physical. Both teams dove on the floor after loose balls. There were many jump balls in the second half. 

Champlin Park was much quicker than Mounds View was. Mounds View didn’t give up. They attacked the basket late in the contest and looked for their shots. 

Champlin Park came away with the 69-40 victory over Mounds View. 

The leading scorers for Mounds View were McMillan with 16 points and Stone with 13 points. 

The leading scorers for Champlin Park were Wright with 21 points, Hill with 11 points and Josiah Strong with 7 points.

MOUNDS VIEW WENT UP AGAINST CHAMPLIN PARK IN A BOYS’ SECTION 5 CLASS 4A SEMIFINAL BASKETBALL GAME

On Feb 29, Mounds View and Champlin Park squared off in the section 5 Class 4A semifinals of the sections.

Mounds View looked to push the ball down the floor. Once on the offensive end they looked to take a lot of time off the clock. 

Champlin Park got the ball into the hands of Aaron Kloppner’s hands. Kloppner did a good job of driving to the basket and making layups.

Mounds View’s Zeke Thompson was all over the floor. On the offensive end Thompson stepped up and was able to knock down mid-range jump shots and layups. 

There were many ties and lead changes throughout the first half. Neither team went on a huge run.

Both teams took the ball hard to the basket. Neither team gave up an uncontested shot.

Mounds View did a good job of scoring baskets in transition. Mounds View guard Nate Albers came up with 3-point shots and mid-range jump shots and layups. 

Mounds View continued to push the ball down the floor and made layups in transition. Thompson and Albers kept on coming up with baskets late in the first half. 

At halftime the score was Mounds View 36, Champlin Park 32. 

As the second half got underway Mounds View continued to look to get the ball into the hands of Albers. 

The defense that Mounds View applied to Champlin Park mad it difficult for them to get a good look at the basket. 

Champlin Park couldn’t get their shots to drop for a period of time in the second half.

Champlin Park called a timeout with 10:14 left in regulation. The score was Mounds View 48, Champlin Park 38.

Mounds View continued to push the ball down the floor and score baskets in transition. 

Champlin Park kept on attacking the basket as they looked to make layups. Champlin Park’s McKinley Wright IV attacked the basket .   

Mounds View kept attacking the basket and coming up with layups.

Champlin Park called a timeout with 2:34 left in regulation. The score Mounds View 57, Champlin Park 54. 

Mounds View looked to take time off the clock late in the game. 

Mounds View called a timeout with 1:16 left in regulation. The score was Mounds View 57, Champlin Park 56.

As the clock wound down the Champlin Park defense stepped up as they didn’t want Mounds View to come up with baskets. 

Champlin Park called a timeout with 39.6 seconds left in regulation. The score was Mounds View 59, Champlin Park 58.

Mounds View came away with the 61-58 victory over Champlin Park. 

The leading scorers for Champlin Park were McKinley Wright IV with 19 points and John with 16 points.

The leading scorers for Mounds View were Albers with 24 points and Thompson with 18 points.

SPRING LAKE PARK JAMBOREE

On Nov. 18 Spring Lake Park hosted a boys basketball jamboree. Each game was played one 18 minute half.

 

OSSEO VS. COLUMBIA HEIGHTS

 

Osseo and Columbia Heights squared off in the first scrimmage. Osseo moved the ball around the floor well late in the contest.

 

Columbia Heights struggled to shoot the ball. Osseo was a lot quicker than Columbia Heights.

 

Osseo came away with the 40-17 victory over Columbia Heights.

 

MOUNDS VIEW VS. IRONDALE

 

Mounds View went up against Irondale. Mounds View pushed the ball down the floor and looked for layups in transition.

 

The score went back and forth early. Neither team went on a run. There were many ties and lead changes.

 

Irondale moved the ball around the 3-point line as they looked to attack the Mounds View defense.

 

They took a lot of time off the clock.

 

Mounds View came away with the 23-21 victory over Irondale.

 

ST. FRANCIS VS. SPRING LAKE PARK

 

St. Francis and Spring Lake Park squared off against each other. St. Francis was able to make layups

off in transition.

 

Spring Lake Park found their shooting touch midway through the half. They started hitting mid-range jump shots and layups.

 

Neither team went on a run throughout the contest.

 

Spring Lake Park came away with the 19-17 victory over St. Francis.

 

TOTINO GRACE WENT UP AGAINST BLAINE

 

Totino Grace and Blaine squared off against each other. The game got off to a quick start as both teams raced up and down the floor trading layups and mid-range jump shots.

 

Totino Grace took a lot of deep three-point shots. They attacked the basket after each shot.

 

Blaine got hot midway through the contest. They were able to hit shots that they put up.

 

Totino Grace countered it as they came up with shots of their own.

 

The score went back and forth as there were many ties and lead changes throughout the contest.

 

Blaine came away with the 26-25 victory over Totino Grace.

 

FRIDLEY VS MAPLE GROVE

 

Fridley took on Maple Grove. Fridley took their time on the offensive end as they swung the ball around the 3-point line.

 

Maple Grove played a zone defense. Fridley wasn’t afraid to shoot deep three-point shots.

 

It took Fridley awhile to get into a shooting rhythm. They couldn’t find their shots.

 

Maple Grove did a good job of attacking the basket. They made layups in transition.

 

Maple Grove came away with the 41-23 victory over Fridley.

 

FOREST LAKE VS COON RAPIDS

 

In the final match up of the event Forest Lake went up against Coon Rapids. Both teams struggled to shoot the ball early.

 

Coon Rapids couldn’t get their offense going throughout the game.

 

Forest Lake was much more efficient in running their offense.

EAGAN WENT UP AGAINST MOUNDS VIEW IN THE GIRLS STATE SOCCER SEMIFINALS

Eagan and Mounds View squared off in a girls state soccer semifinal game at St. Cloud State University.

Eagan’s Sydney Flannery found the goal with 36:51 left in the first half.

With that goal that made the score Eagan 1, Mounds View 0.

Both teams looked to keep the ball in the middle of the field.

Mounds View’s Emily Boyer found the goal with 12 minutes left to go in the first half.

The score was tied at 1 at halftime.

Eagan’s Sydney Sherek scored a goal with 37:27 left in regulation. With that goal that made the score

Eagan 2, Moundsview 1.

Eagan continued to move the ball down the field and looked to score again. They did that on a Taylor Kenealy goal with 23:44 left in regulation.

Eagan scored again with 11:04 left in regulation. With that goal that made the score Eagan 4, Mounds View 1.

Mounds View’s Mariah Northrop scored a goal with 4:49 left in regulation. With that goal that made the score Eagan 4, Mounds View 2.

Eagan was able to move the ball down the field effectively throughout the game.

Eagan came away with the 4-2 victory over Mounds View.

MOUNDS VIEW WENT UP AGAINST EDINA IN A ROUND OF 32 FOOTBALL GAME

Mounds View and Edina went up against each other in a Round of 32 football game. Mounds View kicked off to start the game. 

Edina took over on their own 23-yard line. Edina used both the running and passing attack on their first drive. Edina’s Doma Morris came up with a short run for a first down. The Edina offense stalled out and they had to punt on 4th-and-3 they faked the punt and ran a running play but the defense stepped up.

Mounds View took over on their 41-yard line. They were not able to come up with a first down and they punted. 

Edina took over on their own 14-yard line. Edina’s Brock Boltmann looked to get the ball into his hands and was able to get past the defenders. Boltmann came up with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Julien Ramboz who came up with reception. The extra-point attempt was good.

With 3:19 left in the first quarter the score was Edina 7, Mounds View 0.

Mounds View took over on their own 37-yard line. Mounds View was picked off by Pema Lhewa. Edina couldn’t move the ball and they punted on 4th-and-5. 

Mounds View took over on their own 29-yard line. 

After one quarter of play the score was Edina 7, Mounds View 0.

The Edina defense stepped up big as they slowed down the Mounds View offense. Mounds View punted on 4-and-13.

Edina took over on their own 32-yard line. Boltmann was able to get the ball to his teammates as he knew where they were on the field. On 4th-and-12 Edina punted the ball. 

Mounds View looked to try to confuse the Edina defense. The Edina defense came up with some big plays that slowed down the Mounds View offense. Mounds View’s Luke Swenson came up with a 2 yard reception that resulted in a touchdown. The extra-point attempt was no good.

With 53.3 seconds left in the second quarter the score was Edina 7, Mounds View 6.

Edina fumbled the ball and Mounds View recovered the ball. Mounds View looked to keep the ball on the ground. Edina’s Pericles Angelos came up with an interception. 

At halftime the score was Edina 7, Mounds View 6. 

Edina kicked off to start the third quarter. Mounds View couldn’t move the ball down the field and they had to punt the ball on 4th-and -9.

Mounds View’s offense stalled out and they punted on 4th-and -16.

Edina called a timeout with 4:42 on the clock; the score was Edina 7, Mounds View 6.

Edina’s Parker Rickert came up with a 32-yard reception. Evan Holm came up with a huge reception that brought the ball to the 8-yard line. 

After three quarters of play the score Edina 7, Mounds View 6.

On fourth and goal and they were not able to come up with a first down.

Mounds View took over on the 4-yard line. Mounds View didn’t move the ball down the field and on 4th-and-5 they punted. 

Edina took over on the 15-yard line. Rickert came up with a 25-yard reception. 

Holm came up with a 44 yard touchdown. The extra point attempt was good.

With 3:37 left in the fourth quarter the score was Edina 14, Mounds View 6.

Mounds View took over on their own 45-yard line. Mounds View turned the ball over on downs. 

Edina looked to take time off the clock late in the fourth quarter. 

Mounds View took over for one last chance with 1:38 left in the game. Holm intercepted the ball and scored on a 58-yard run. The extra point attempt was good.

That made the score 21-6; that was the final of the game.

EDINA AND MOUNDS VIEW WENT UP AGAINST EACH OTHER IN A BOYS BASKETBALL GAME

On Jan. 11 at Roseville High School Edina took on Mounds View in a boys basketball game. Edina started the game in a zone defense. Mounds View started in man-to-man.

 

The score went back and forth early on in the contest. Both teams played tough defense.

 

Edina’s Max Lynch took the ball hard to the basket. He was able to get the ball on the low block and was able to make layups.

 

Mounds View called a timeout with 11:20 left in the first half. The score was Edina 14, Mounds View 7.

 

Edina did a good job of getting the ball down the floor. They were able to hit baskets in transition.

Mounds View’s Ryan Kaczynski was not afraid to shoot the ball from anywhere within the three-point line.  He was able to make his mostly two point shots that he took in the first half. His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball where he could make it.

 

After a slow start Mounds View was able to get within one with 5:35 left in the first half. Edina called a timeout with 5:32 to go. The score was Edina 23, Mounds View 22.

 

Kaczynski continued to hit shots throughout the first half. Mounds View had a difficult time slowing him down on the offensive end.

 

Edina’s Ben Boon got hot late in the first half as he was able to step up and knock down some deep three-point shots.

 

Mounds View made a run late in the first half. At halftime the score was Edina 34, Mounds View 31.

 

Edina continued to look to push the ball down the floor in the second half. They were not afraid however to work the ball around the three-point line to take time off the clock.

 

There were many ties and lead changes throughout the game. After the first 4:00 of the game both

teams got a handle on what the other team was doing and both teams were evenly matched.

 

Mounds View’s Ben Spencer was able to step back behind the three-point line and knock down some deep shots.

 

Edina continued to attack the basket midway through the second half.

 

Both teams took their time of the offensive end in the second half, as they worked the ball around the three-point line.  

 

There were several ties and lead changes in the second half.

 

Mounds View switched between man-to-man and zone defense late in the second half. They were able to keep Edina on their toes. Edina however was able to get past their defense and hit shots.

 

In a hard-fought game Mounds View came away with the 74-63 victory over Edina.

 

The leading scorer for Edina was Boone with 19 points and the leading scorer for Mounds View was Kaczynski with 27 points.

MOUNDS VIEW WENT UP AGAINST EAST RIDGE IN A BASKETBALL GAME

In the second game of the day Mounds View went up against East Ridge. The tempo was slow by both teams.

 

It took awhile for each team to get used to what the other team was doing.

 

Mounds View swung the ball around the three-point line to take time off the clock. East Ridge played multiple defenses to try to confuse Mounds View on offense and they were able to do that.

 

The score went back and forth throughout first half; neither team went on a run. Both teams were evenly matched.

 

The score at halftime was tied at 28.

 

East Ridge came out on fire to start the second half. They strung some baskets together and were able to take a 33-28 lead early in the second half.

 

Mounds View didn’t back down however, as they continued to look to get to the basket by taking their time on the offensive end.

 

East Ridge did do a good job of getting baskets in transition on the fast break.

 

Mounds View was not afraid to shoot either the outside jump shot or the lay-up.  They were successful at making both shots.

 

Mounds View used both man-to-man and zone defenses throughout the contest. East Ridge used mostly man-to-man on the defensive end.

 

Mounds View called a timeout with 12:17 left in regulation. The score was East Ridge 45, Mounds View 33.

 

Mounds View continued to shoot the ball but it didn’t go in.

 

East Ridge did a good job of taking time off of the clock in the second half. They swung the ball around the three-point line as they looked for their shots that they wanted to get.

 

East Ridge was able to slow down the Mounds View offense in the second half.

 

East Ridge came away with the 68-50 victory over Mounds View.

MOUNDS VIEW HOLDS FOOTBALL SCRIMMAGE

As the 2011 Minnesota State High School League football season gets underway teams have set up scrimmages to get some live action in practice.

Coon Rapids, Mounds View,  Rosemont and Tartan all participated in a scrimmage at Mounds View High School.

Each team went through drills. After the drills were over, all four teams went to different spots on the field and scrimmaged against each other.

After that all four teams ran different series on offense and defense.

I though it was a good way for the players to get out and show their skills and go up against different teams before they start the regular season. 

EDEN PRAIRIE IS TAKING ON MOUNDS VIEW IN THE FIRST GAME OF THE EVENING SESSION

As this game gets under way here both of these teams are looking to push the ball up the court. I think that this will be a fast pace game form the onset. Mounds View is looking to swing the ball around the three point line here to start this game off. They want to get as many different looks as the can at the basket and spend as much time as they can here in the early goings. Eden Prairie is looking to extend the floor and looking to push the ball up the court early in this game. Ethen Wragge has just come down and hit a long three point shot here to give the Eagles a boost of energy. Both of these teams are playing hard and really going after each other here early in this game, as they are both going after loose balls and getting back on defense. With 10:48 left to go in the first half the score is Eden Prairie 7 and Mounds View 5.

Eden Prairie has been able to come down and make a couple of good shots in a row here. The Mounds View players haven’t been able to get there shots to drop here in a stretch of time. They continue to shoot the ball hoping that they will get the bounce that they want. Eden Prairie is looking to get the ball out of the rim quickly here and extend. Mounds View is looking to trap the Eden Prairie players when they bring the ball up court.

This game has been back and forth. There have been many different lead changes in this game here this evening. It’s still early in this game and it is any ones game. Whichever team can come down and make shots in the end will come out ahead in the end. So far both of these teams have played very well and they are matched up well. Both of these teams will have to fight it out here in the second half. At half time the score is Mounds View 26 and Eden Prairie 32. Mounds View shot 14.3% from the three point line in the first half. Eden Prairie shot 37.5 percent from the three point line.

Eden Prairie continues to look sharp here in the second half. As they have been throughout this game. Ethan Wragge has hit a couple of nice shots here in this game. They continue to come out and play aggressive here in this game. They have been able to run their offense here in this game. They are able to push the ball up the court here in this game. Mounds View continues to shoot three point shots here as they want to shoot them self’s back into this game here tonight. They are looking for the shot that they want. They are running their offense based on passing and cutting. Mounds View has made a run in this game and they are trying to get back into this game here this evening. They will not have enough though as they tried to come back they don’t have enough to get caught up. In the end the final score was Mounds View 52 and Eden Prairie 68.

Eden Prairie was able to control this game here tonight and they were just able to fight a little bit harder than this Mounds View team. You have to give the Mounds View kids credit here as they kept a positive attitude and they played very hard till the end. Ethan Wragge had a nice game for Eden Prairie. He was there leading scorer with 22 points for the Eagles tonight.

SPRING LAKE PARK PANTHERS ARE TAKING ON THE MOUNDS VIEW MUSTANGS

The Spring Lake Park Panthers are taking on the Mustangs of Mounds View. This is the first time seeing either of these teams play this season. There are a few different high school coaches that are in attendance at tonight’s game to scout either one of these teams. We are about to get this game started here. The student section is on their feet at the end of the court.

Mounds View has started this game off playing in a zone defense. They are getting to their spots on the court and playing aggressively from there they are looking to trap the ball in the corners early here in this game.

Spring Lake Park is looking to push the ball up the court here early in this game. Spring Lake Park has gotten out to a quick 7-0 lead with just under 15:30 left in the first half. Spring Lake Park is also started in a zone defense to open this game up with. Spring Lake Park's Shaun Jensen has played well here in the opening minutes of this game. He has came down and made some nice looking shots here to open this game up. He has just hit a deep three with 12:46 left to go in the first half and that prompted Zig Kauls to take a time out with the score Spring Lake Park 12 and Mounds View 4.

Both of these teams are playing aggressively here in this game so far. Spring Lake Park has come out on fire here making most of the shots that they have put up so far but the Spring Lake Park players are not afraid to shoot the ball either as they have taken a bunch of shots by they have not fallen for the Panthers so far. Spring Lake Park is just trying to stall here a little bit as they are passing the ball around the three point arc. Mounds View is playing 2-3 zone on defense and they are letting Spring Lake Park dictate the clock and making them look for the shot that they want to get. Shaun Jensen has just made a nice move to the basket here as he has made a nice up and under shot to the basket and he made it. After he made that shot he went and played tough man defense. Tyler Ylvisaker has just come down and drained a three point shot from about 2 feet behind the three point line. He's earning a good round of cheers from the crowd this evening after he made two there point shots in a row. Both teams are diving on the ball for loose balls and they are really getting after it here in this game. At half time the score is Spring Lake Park Panthers 29 and the Mounds View Mustangs 18.

As we get the second gets underway Spring Lake Panthers look to come out on fire and under control. Both of these teams are playing hard here. Elijah Sabah has come down and made a nice move around the basket here to open the second half. He has impressed me with his moves around the basket and his ability to finish.

Mounds View has been able to get up and make some quick shots here to open the second half. They have been able to go on a little run here to start this second half and they are now right back into this game here folks. With 14:49 left to go in regulation the score is now Spring Lake Park 33 and Mounds View 30. And that has Grant Guzy worried so he has taken a time out so he can calm his troops down.

Trey Scott from Spring Lake Park has played well here in this game he has been able to come down and hit a couple of nice three point shots here. He is not afraid to draw contact as he goes plowing into a crowd of defenders and is able to make a few good shots in traffic, and he has played nice defense. Derek Dahl has just come down and made a couple of nice shots in a row here for Spring Lake Park. He has had a few nice plays throughout this game tonight. This Spring Lake Park team has looked good here tonight. They have been able to find the basket here tonight. You have to give credit to the Mounds View players they have also played good basketball throughout this game tonight. There is still a lot of time left to go in this game and neither team is giving up. With 8:53 left to go in the second half the score is Spring Lake Park 49 and Mounds View 38. Elijah Sabah has continued to play well here tonight. He has the moves that are just so fluent. He really knows the game and he is not afraid to get his teammates into the game. With 5:08 left to go in regulation the score is Spring Lake Park 51 and Mounds View 46. Mounds View is trying to trap Spring Lake Park here late in this game. They are trying to create havoc on the court. Spring Lake Park has been able to break the press here tonight.

With 2:33 left to go in regulation the score is Spring Lake Park 55 and Mounds View 48. This game has gotten very physical here in the last few minutes of the game. Both of these teams are really taking it to each other here as time is running out. They are right into this game. Both of these teams know that it is there game to win. Mounds View is trying to make a comeback and Spring Lake Park is looking to protect its lead. Cole Christenson has just came down and hit a huge thee point shot here with 7.1 second left to go the score is Spring Lake Park 59 and Mounds View 56.

Mounds View was not able to find the basket here tonight until they went on a flurry in the closing seconds. The final of the game was Spring Lake Park 60 and Mounds View 56. They have played hard and aggressive here tonight but the ball did not bounce the Mustangs way this evening. Spring Lake Park was lead in scoring by Shaun Jensen with 17 points. For Mounds View the leading scorer was Dan Carroll with 20 points. This was Mounds View's first loss of the season.

FORMER MOUNDS VIEW STAR NICK HORVATH RETURNS

According to the New Zealand professional basketball web site former Mounds View star Nick Horvath will be back in action for the Wellington Saints. According to Nzhearald the reason that Nick Horvath had to take time off was because he married former hockey star Sheree Phillips. Congratulations Nick Horvath.
