NORTH LAKES HUSKIES TOOK ON THE SPECTRUM STING IN A BOYS BASKETBALL GAME

North Lakes and Spectrum went up against each other in a boys basketball game at the Target Center in downtown Minneapolis.
 
It took a while for each team to get into a shooting rhythm.
 
North Lakes pushed the ball down the floor as they looked to score baskets in transition.
 
On defense North Lakes played a zone defense. They wanted to force Spectrum to take long shots.
 
North Lakes’ Zach Paulson came off the bench and looked to provide an offensive spark.
 
Spectrum’s Zach Knollenberg was not afraid to shoot the ball from inside the key. He was able to get the ball from his teammates and shoot jump shots from the paint.
 
Spectrum called a timeout with 12:27 left in the first half. The score was Spectrum 8, North Lakes 4.
 
Spectrum played a zone defense. That made North Lakes have to take long shots.  
 
Spectrum’s Ben Maki made fast break layups in the first half. He wasn’t afraid to attack the basket in traffic.
 
North Lakes looked to trap on the defensive end. They wanted to force Spectrum to turn the ball over.
When North Lakes turned them over they would score layups.
 
Neither team went on a run in the first half. There were many ties and lead changes in the first half.
 
North Lakes’ Derek Beatty stepped up and knocked down some deep three-point shots to keep his team in the game. He wasn’t afraid to shoot the ball with a hand of the defender in his face.
 
Spectrum came up with some layups late in the first half.
 
At halftime the score was Spectrum 27, North Lakes 23.
 
As the second half for underway both teams started in a zone defense. The score continued to go back and forth early.
 
Knollenberg continued to come up with some nice layups. He kept his team in the game.
 
North Lakes’ Beatty got hot from behind the three-point line. He stepped up big in the second half.
 
Spectrum’s John Brand came up with some nice stops on the defensive end. He was able to get steals on defense. Brand was also able to make layups and jump shots from inside the paint throughout the second half.
 
North Lakes called timeout with 13:02 left in regulation. The score was Spectrum 42, North Lakes 31.
 
North Lakes turned the ball over a few times in the second half. Spectrum was able to make layups off the turnovers.
 
North Lakes continued to battle hard throughout the second half. They didn’t give up any easy baskets.
 
North Lakes’ Christopher Rosencrantz came up with some big shots from the paint to keep his team in the game. His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball when he called for it in the paint.
 
North Lakes called a timeout with 7:07 left in regulation. The score was Spectrum 47, North Lakes 41.
 
Rosencrantz kept on hitting his shots late in regulation.
 
There were many ties and lead changes the last five minutes of regulation.
 
Maki kept on hitting his shots down the stretch.
 
The game came down to the wire.
 
The game was tied at 58 at the end of regulation.
 
In the overtime period North Lakes continued to look to push the ball down the floor and get baskets in transition.
 
Layups were the shot selection in overtime as each team pushed the ball down the floor.
 
Spectrum’s Knollenberg came up with some layups in the overtime period to keep his team in the contest. He was also able to hit free throws when he was fouled.
 
Brand came up with some jump shots in the overtime period.
 
Beatty knocked down a jump shot at the buzzer for the North Lakes 66-64 overtime victory over Spectrum.  
 
The leading scorers for Spectrum were Maki and Brand each with 15 points.
 
The leading scorers for North Lakes were Rosencrantz with 24 points and Ozment with 11 points.

NORTH LAKES HUSKIES TOOK ON THE SPECTRUM STING IN A GIRLS BASKETBALL GAME

On Feb. 17 the North Lakes Huskies went up against the Spectrum Sting in a girls basketball game at the Target Center.  
 
Both teams started the game out in a zone defense that they applied at half court.
 
North Lakes had a difficult time shooting early in the contest.
 
Spectrum called a timeout with 15:45 left in the first half. The score was Spectrum 6, North Lakes 0.
 
Spectrum passed the ball around the three-point line as they looked to attack the zone defense that North Lakes was playing.  
 
Spectrum came up with some steals and they were able to come up with layups.
 
The pace of the game was slow. Both teams ran set plays on offense and they were able to take a lot of time off of the clock in the first half.
 
Spectrum tried to swing the ball around the three-point line as they tried to throw the defense off.
 
Spectrum’s Macie Burns came up with some nice mid-range jump shots in the first half. Her teammates did a good job of getting her the ball in spots where she could shoot it.
 
Spectrum took a lot of time off of the clock on the offensive end as they swung the ball around the three-point line.  
 
North Lakes Alex Munkelwitz came up with some key deep three-point shots late in the first half.
 
Her teammates did a good job of getting her the ball in spots where she could shoot it.
 
North Lakes called a timeout with 3:23 left in the first half. The score was Spectrum 21, North Lakes 10.
 
Spectrum stayed in a zone defense out of the timeout. North Lakes did a good job of penetrating the zone defense but they couldn’t get their shots to fall in the first half.
 
North Lakes struggled to shoot the ball throughout the first half.
 
At halftime the score was Spectrum 27, North Lakes 13.
 
As the second half got underway Spectrum kept on looking to get the ball into the hands of Rachel Stevenson. Stevenson did a good job of making her layups. Teammates Noelle Diekman and Kassidi Robbins each came up with some big shots.
 
North Lakes continued to swing the ball around the three-point line as they kept on attacking the Spectrum zone.
 
Both teams played a lot of zone in the second half. That made for a lot of passing the ball around the three-point line as both teams tried to take time off the clock while attacking the zone.
 
Spectrum’s Rachael Goldsmith stepped up big and was able to knock down deep three-point shots.
 
North Lakes wasn’t able to get their offense going throughout the game. Even though they had a hard time hitting their shots they didn’t give up.
 
North Lakes called a timeout with 7:07 left in regulation. The score was Spectrum 42, North Lakes 18.
 
Spectrum continued to attack the basket late in the contest. Stevenson continued to hit her mid-range jump shots late in the game.  
 
Spectrum came away with the 54-20 victory over North Lakes.
 
The leading scorers for North Lakes were Munkelwitz and Miranda McGlade each with 6 points.
 
The leading scorers for Spectrum were Diekman with 12 points, Robbins with 10 and Stevenson with 10 points.

MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST TOOK ON MINNEAPOLIS SOUTH IN A BOYS BASKETBALL GAME

On Feb. 17 Minneapolis Southwest and Minneapolis South squared off in a boys basketball game.
 
South looked to push the ball down the floor and get baskets in transition.
 
It took each team to get into a shooting rhythm.  
 
Southwest’s Akeem Smith and Allen Edwards had good floor communication when they were on the court. Edwards was able to get the ball into the hands of Smith’s hands and Smith was able to come up with layups.
 
South’s guard Kenley Farrow raced down the floor and was able to make layups in transition. If he didn’t think that he had a good shot he would kick it to one of his teammates for the assist.
 
South’s Oscar Campbell also brought the ball down the court and was able to get his teammates the ball. South did a good job of talking to each other.  
 
Southwest’s Cam Ross came up with layups in the first half. His teammates were able to get him the ball in spots where he could shoot it.
 
There were many ties and lead changes throughout the first half. Neither team went on a run.
 
Southwest’s Keion Alexander was all over the floor. He was able to knock down mid-range jump shots and layups consistently on the offensive end.
 
Edwards was able to take the ball coast to coast and come up with layups throughout the first half. He was not afraid to take the ball hard to the basket.
 
Farrow continued to come up with some big jump shots for his team.
 
South played a zone defense in the first half. Southwest was able to get through the zone defense and was able to get to the basket.
 
South was able to create steals off of their defense and they were able to come up with layups on the offensive end.
 
Both teams took a lot of time off the clock late in the first half. South swung the ball around the three-point line that made Southwest have to come out of their zone defense and play man-to-man.
 
At halftime the score was Southwest 39, South 38.
 
As the second half got underway both teams started on in a zone defense.
 
Southwest did look to continue to push the ball down the floor and score layups in transition.
 
Farrow kept his hot shooting touch going as he was able to keep knocking down mid-range jump shots throughout the second half.
 
South’s Taron Myers came up with some few deep three-point shots that gave his team the lead with just under 14:00 left in regulation.
 
Southwest came out flat to start the second half. South took advantage of that as they were able to attack the basket and hit their shots.
 
South’s Darrius Clinton came up with some deep three-point shots in the second half.  Southwest had a difficult time guarding him.
 
Southwest called a timeout with 10:06 left in regulation. The score was South 66, Southwest 52.
 
Southwest continued to attack the basket even though they had a hard time hitting shots. They didn’t quit shooting the ball.
 
Farrow kept on getting to the basket as he attacked the basket in the second half. Myers also came up with some layups throughout the second half.
 
South came out fired up in the second half. They did a good job of controlling the tempo of the game.
 
South looked like they had a lot more energy as they picked up the speed of the game.
 
Southwest didn’t back down in the second half. They did have a difficult time shooting the ball throughout the second half.
 
Southwest came to life late in the second half. They were able to cut the deficit from 15 to 8 with 3:46 left in the second half.
 
South kept on attacking the basket and getting the ball into the hands of Clinton and Farrow down the stretch.  
 
Southwest tried to make a late comeback but that fell short. South came away with the 91-76 victory over Southwest.
 
The leading scorers for Southwest were Ross with 24 points. Alexander with 15 points and Edwards with 13 points.
 
The leading scorers for South were Farrow with 23 points and Myers with 22 points.

MARANATHA TOOK ON NEW LIFE ACADEMY IN A BOYS BASKETBALL GAME

Maranatha took on New Life Academy in a boys basketball contest. Both teams started the game in a man-to-man defense.
 
New Life’s Kyle Linton was all over the floor. He came up with some nice mid-range jump shots in the first half. He sparked his team on the offensive end. If he didn’t think that he could hit his shot he would pass it to teammates Conrad Engstrom or Sam Nelson who both stepped up and knocked down big shots from in the lane.
 
New Life’s Derek Wu came off the bench and was able to come up with some nice stops on the defensive end.
 
The score went back and forth for a period of time. Neither team went on a run.
Maranatha’s Damario Armstrong came up with some nice layups late in the first half.
 
At halftime the score was New Life 36, Maranatha 34.  
 
As the second half got underway the score went back and forth.
 
New Life’s Jake Wynia stepped up and was able to hit jump shots from the paint. Maranatha was not able to slow him down on the offensive end. His teammate Nelson came up with some huge layups in the second half.
 
New Life wanted to pick up the tempo of the game in the second half. Ebenezer Ketema came off the bench and provided an offensive spark as he passed the ball to his teammates in spots where they could hit their shots.
 
Both teams raced up and down the floor making layups as they traded baskets.
 
New Life went to a 1-2-2 defense and that caused Maranatha problems. They had used a man-to-man defense for most of the first half.
 
Neither team went on a run in the second half. The defenses made it difficult for either team get out and go on a run because the other team would also hit their shots.
 
Maranatha got hot late in the half as they went on a 6-0 run. They were down by two with 2:17 left in regulation when New Life called a timeout. They couldn’t take the lead however.
 
New Life Academy came away with the 70-66 victory over Maranatha.

HERITAGE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY TOOK ON LESTER PRAIRIE/HOLY TRINITY IN A BOYS BASKETBALL GAME

Heritage and Lester Prairie went up against each other in a boys basketball game. Both teams looked to move the ball down the floor as they wanted to score baskets in transition.
 
Heritage came out alive as they were able to score baskets in transition.
 
Lester Prairie swung the ball around the three-point line as they looked to get the ball into the hands of Alex Heigl. Heigl was able to hit a mid-range jump shot constantly in the first half.
 
There were many ties and lead changes throughout the first half. Neither team went on a run.   
 
Heritage got the ball into the hands of Drew Kleinschmidt. He was able to get hot from the paint. The defense had a hard time slowing him down.  
 
Lester Prairie’s Nick Machemehl came up with some nice layups in the first half.
 
Heritage’s Spenser Bland hit his layups to keep his team in the game.
 
At halftime the score was Heritage 30, Lester Prairie 29.
 
Heritage spent the first half in a zone defense, and opened the second in the same set.
 
Heritage looked to get the ball into the hands of CJ Woda and Kleinschmidt in the second half. Both of those guys took the ball hard to the basket as they were able to make lay-ups.
 
The score continued to go back and forth throughout the second half.
 
Lester Prairie’s Nathan Anderson came up with some big three-point baskets in the second half to keep his team in the game.
 
Lester Prairie continued to get the ball into the hands of Machemehl who was able to hit his layups.
 
Both teams had to work hard for their shots because the other team was playing hard on the defensive end.  
 
Bland was able to come up with some defensive steals and was able to come up with the offensive baskets.
 
Lester Prairie called a timeout with 6:11 left in regulation. The score was Heritage 51, Lester Prairie 44.
 
Lester Prairie looked to trap late in the contest and force Heritage to turn it over.
 
Heritage was able to hit their shots late in the game.  
 
Heritage came away with the 62-48 victory over Lester Prairie.    
 
The leading scorer for Lester Prairie was Machemehl with 20 points.
 
The leading scores for Heritage were Woda and Kleinschmidt each with 17 points.

WEST LUTHERAN TOOK ON SOUTHWEST CHRISTIAN IN A BOYS BASKETBALL GAME

West Lutheran and Southwest Christian went up against each other in a boys basketball game. Each team looked to score baskets on the fast break.
 
West Lutheran started the game in a zone defense. They wanted to make Southwest Christian shoot long shots.
 
West Lutheran had trouble shooting the ball in the early goings. Southwest Christian came up with rebounds.
 
The score went back and forth throughout the first half. Neither team went on a run.
 
At halftime the score was Southwest Christian 36, West Lutheran 28.
 
As the second half got underway Southwest Christian came out on fire. They were able to move the ball well down the floor and were able to get their offense going.
 
West Lutheran came out flat as they were not able to get into an offensive rhythm early in the second half.  
 
Southwest Christian went to a half court man-to-man defense in the second half. They were able to slow down the West Lutheran offense.  
 
West Lutheran did play with a lot more energy midway through the second half.
 
Southwest Christian was able to turn West Lutheran over and they were able to score on the turnovers.
 
Southwest Christian’s Jack Jenson and Brett Reinhart were all over the floor. On the offensive end they knew where they could hit shots. They both came up with big shots in the contest.
 
West Lutheran couldn’t hang with the speed of Southwest Christian, as they were too quick.
 
Southwest Christian came away with the 72-50 victory over West Lutheran.
 
The leading scorers for West Lutheran were Will Steffel with 14 and Paul Draeger with 13 points.
 
The leading scorers for Southwest Christian were Jenson with 22 points and Reinhart with 21 points.
