MINNEAPOLIS ROOSEVELT TOOK ON MINNESOTA TRANSITIONS IN A BOYS’ BASKETBALL CONTEST AND KEVIN NOREEN BREAKS SCORING RECORD

Minneapolis Roosevelt took on Minnesota Transitions Charter School in a nonconference boys’ basketball game. MTS looked to push the ball up the court from the beginning of the game.

Both teams started the game at a frantic pace as they each wanted to get the tempo in their favor. MTS looked to press from the beginning of the game.

MTS was looking to get Kevin Noreen the ball on the low block. He was able to shoot the ball from the low block with success in the first half. Coming into the game Kevin needed 28 points to surpass Cody Schilling from Ellsworth to break the Minnesota state career scoring record who currently has the record of 3,428 career points.

MTS was able to get a 19-6 lead over Roosevelt with 10:45 left in the first half. Roosevelt had trouble shooting the ball. Their offense was stagnant and they couldn’t find an open man to make a shot. Roosevelt didn’t give up. They kept on attacking MTS and playing aggressively.

For Roosevelt, Franscois Davis was not afraid to shoot the ball. He looked to shoot the three-point shot every chance he could. He basically had a green light to shoot the ball in the first half.

MTS went to a zone defense. They wanted to try to stall the game out. Roosevelt played them tough. They looked to attack the defense and they were looking to get shots in the zone.

At half time MTS had a 34-24 lead over Minneapolis Roosevelt.

As the second half got underway both teams came out and played aggressively. Roosevelt looked determined to chip into the deficit.

MTS looked to move the ball well on the offensive end. On the defensive end they played in a zone defense.

With 3:28 left to go in regulation, Kevin Noreen for MTS broke the all-time state scoring record. The score was 73-41.

MTS was able to pull away with the victory in the second half. The final of the game was MTS 81 and Minneapolis Roosevelt 51.

Kevin Noreen finished the game with 39 points and currently has 3,429 career points. I was joined by the Czar from Twin Cities Boys Hoops. You can read about his thoughts on the MTS Roosevelt game here. The Czar and I was able to get an interview with Kevin Noreen as he talked about the game and breaking the record.

KEVIN NOREEN COMMITS TO BOSTON COLLGE

Minnesota Transitions star basketball player has verbally committed to Boston College. We will graduate from high school in the spring of 2010. John Sherman is his high school coach this is what he had to say about Kevin Noreen. “I have coached Kevin for five years at the varsity level. In that span he has been a starter at all five positions ----- 3 as a 7th grader, 2 as an 8th grader, 1 as a ninth grader, 5 as a sophomore and 4 last year as a junior. I don't think there is another player in the country that has ever done that, and Kevin performed admirably at all five spots. Obviously, his strengths are versatility and ability to score from anywhere on the floor. He is a career 49 percent three-point shooter and last year averaged 32.8 points per game to lead the state. This season he will become the state's all-time leading scorer, and he has done it unselfishly. Off the court, he is a good citizen and an "A" student. I believe he will play the 4 spot in college. He is a legitimate 6-10 now and still possesses the guard skills of his younger days. It is a pleasure to coach Kevin in all respects.”

Kevin’s dad Jerry Noreen is an assistant coach at Minnesota Transitions. “Jerry Noreen has coached with me at MTS for five years and has been a Magic coach for 5 years. Kyle Noreen, who will be a junior, is a 6-5 guard, entering his fourth year as a starter. He has scholarship offers from 2 DI schools, Liberty University and the University of Denver. He is going to the New Mexico and Iowa camps this summer and has already been to the camps at Virginia, Marquette, Boston College and Virginia Commonwealth. Kyle has mega-hops and shows a variety of dunking skills. Excellent ball handler, great shooter, he could easily become a high Division I prospect.”

MINNESOTA TRANSITIONS' NOREEN FINDS RECRUITING EVENTFUL

By DAVID La VAQUE, Star Tribune

Minnesota Transitions Charter School forward Kevin Noreen can share fun stories from the college basketball recruiting trail.

He received pointers from NBA legend John Stockton on his unofficial visit to Gonzaga. And he shattered a backboard on his unofficial visit to Boston College. Noreen, a 6-9 1/2 junior who is poised to set the boys' state record for career points next season, has received scholarship offers from both of those schools. He plans to attend camps this summer and potentially land offers from Marquette, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

"Since eighth grade my goal was to get a Division I scholarship," he said.

A varsity player since seventh grade, Noreen averaged 32.8 points per game as a junior last season, bringing his career total to 2,881 points. Cody Schilling of Ellsworth graduated in 2008 with the record of 3,428 points. Noreen could pass him mid-season and even might challenge the 4,000-point plateau.

"I just want to win," said Noreen, who lost to Schilling and Ellsworth in the 2008 Class 1A championship game. "Scoring is my role on the team but I want to be a team player."

He also has made unofficial visits to Butler, Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Northern Illinois, Wisconsin and Wisconsin-Green Bay. Noreen plans to narrow his list to five schools in June and decide in July.

Jerry Noreen, Kevin's father, said the Gophers "are keeping tabs on him, but right now they don't see him as their style of player."
