MONTICELLO WENT UP AGAINST CLOQUET IN A BOYS’ BASKETBALL GAME

Monticello and Cloquet squared off in a boys’ basketball game at Totino-Grace as part of the Martin Luther King Holiday Classic on Jan. 15. 

Cloquet got everyone involved in the offense. Cloquet’s Pokornowski Jayden came up with layups and mid-range jump shots.

The score was close throughout the first half. Neither team went on a run.

Cloquet switched between man-to-man and zone defenses in the first half. They looked to confuse Monticello on the offensive end.

Monticello’s Rezi Useh came up with mid-range jump shots and layups. His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball in spots where he could shoot it. Teammate Matt Todd also came up with mid-range jump shots and layups. 

At halftime the score was Monticello 49, Cloquet 32.

As the second half got underway Cloquet continued to struggle to shoot the ball.

Monticello passed the ball around the three-point line as they took time off the clock and were able to get everyone involved in the offense.

Monticello took advantage of Cloquet’s missed shots as they came up with layups on the defensive end.

Monticello called a timeout with 12:36 left in regulation. The score was Monticello 56, Cloquet 38.

Monticello wasn’t afraid to take deep 3-point shots. Everyone on the floor for both teams rebounded. Monticello pushed the ball down the floor and looked to score baskets in transition.

Todd and Useh both came up with baskets throughout the second half. Their teammates did a good job of getting them the ball where they could shoot it.

Cloquet couldn’t get their offense going and Monticello was quicker than Monticello was able to get their shots to drop.

Monticello came away with the 78-49 victory over Cloquet.

The leading scorers Cloquet were Jayden and Turnbull each with 12 points and Leuzzo with 11 points.

The leading scorer for Monticello was Todd with 18 points. 

MONTICELLO WENT UP AGAINST SARTELL-ST. STEPHEN IN A BOYS’ BASKETBALL GAME

Monticello and Sartell-St. Stephen squared off in a boys’ basketball game. The score went back and forth early.

Sartell started the game in a zone defense. They wanted to make Monticello take deep 3-point shots.

Monticello pushed the ball down the floor and came up with 3-point baskets. Monticello’s Matt Todd came up with mid-range jump shots and 3-point baskets.

Sartell called a timeout with 8:26 left in the first half. The score was Monticello 24, Sartell 16.

Monticello kept on getting the ball into the hands of Todd. The Sartell defense had a tough time slowing Todd down.

Sartell’s Preston Simpson directed his team’s offense. He could get to the basket and could get shots out of the offense. He also did a good job of talking to his teammates and letting them know where they were supposed to be on the offensive end.

At halftime, the score was Monticello 42, Sartell 33.

As the second half got underway Monticello continued to pass the ball around to each other as they kept everyone involved in the offense.

Todd kept on knocking down shots. His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball where he could shoot it.

Sartell struggled to shoot the ball throughout the second half. They were not able to make shots what they put up.

Monticello was too quick for Sartell. Monticello struggled to shoot the ball throughout the game.

Monticello came away with the 76-60 victory over Sartell.

ST. CLOUD APOLLO WENT UP AGAINST MONTICELLO IN A BOYS’ BASKETBALL GAME

St. Cloud Apollo and Monticello squared off in a boys’ basketball game as part of the Breakdown Sports USA Granite City Classic.

It took a while for each team to get into the game. Monticello pushed the ball down the floor and got everyone involved in the offense.

Monticello passed the ball around the 3-point line as they worked on getting everyone involved in the offense.

There were several ties and lead changes throughout the first half. Neither team went on a run.

The defensive pressure that both teams applied made it difficult for the other team to take open shots at the basket.

Apollo called a timeout with 5:32 in the first half.  The score was Apollo 14, Monticello 12.

Monticello used a zone defense in the first half.

The score went back and forth late in the first half.

At halftime, the score was Apollo 23, Monticello 20.

St. Cloud Apollo guard Abdihakim Sukri was all over the floor. On the offensive end Sukri could get his teammates the ball in spots where they could shoot it. Sukri was also able to make mid-range jump shots and layups.

Apollo kept on attacking the basket throughout the second half. They shared the ball well and came up with stops on the defensive end of the floor.

Monticello went into a scoring drought in the second half. They were not able to hit shots. Even though they struggled to make shots they kept on shooting the ball.

Apollo called a timeout with 7:58 left to go in regulation. The score was Apollo 44, Monticello 33.

Monticello came up with steals on defense and turned them into points on offense. On the defensive end, Monticello looked to trap Apollo as soon as they crossed half court.

Apollo called a timeout with 4:15 left in regulation. The score was Apollo 49, Monticello 40.

Monticello attacked the basket late in regulation and could come up with layups and mid-range jump shots.

Both teams played well throughout the game. The game came down to the wire.

The score went back and forth in the last minute of the game.

St. Cloud Apollo came away with the 64-63 victory over Monticello.

Monticello was lead in scoring by Todd with 24 points.

Apollo was lead in scoring by Edwards with 16 points.

BECKER WENT UP AGAINST MONTICELLO IN A BOYS’ BASKETBALL SECTION GAME

On Feb. 27 Becker squared off against Monticello in a boys’ Section 5 Class 3A basketball game. 

The game was played at St. Cloud State.

It took a while for each team to get into a shooting rhythm.

Becker had a difficult time shooting to start the second half. They were not able to hit shots early.

Becker called a timeout with 13:24 left in the first half. The score was Monticello 11, Becker 1.

Monticello was able to score baskets in transition. Everyone on Monticello got the ball and they did a good job of communicating with everyone on the floor.

 Monticello’s Hunter Rosenbaum came up with mid-range jump shots and layups throughout the first half. He knew where the defenders were and was able to get past them.

 Monticello called a timeout with 6:03 left in the first half. The score was Monticello 20, Becker 11.

Monticello continued to push the ball down the floor and score baskets in transition.

At halftime the score was Monticello 31, Becker 17. 

As the second half got underway Monticello looked to get the ball into the hands of Hunter Rosenbaum and Matt Todd. They both were able to get to the basket and make mid-range jump shots and layups.

After a slow start by Becker, they were able to get their shots to drop in the second half.

Becker couldn’t get their offense going as they had trouble shooting the ball.

Todd came up with huge mid-range jump shots and 3-point shots in the second half.

Monticello called a timeout with 6:39 left in regulation. The score was Monticello 48, Becker 28.

Monticello continued to race down the floor and score baskets in transition.

Monticello came away with the 63-39 victory over Becker.

The leading scorer for Becker was Dillion Radunz with 12 points.

The leading scorers for Monticello were Todd with 22 points and Rosenbaum with 13 points.

ALBANY WENT UP AGAINST MONTICELLO IN A BOYS' BASKETBALL GAME

On Dec. 30 Albany and Monticello squared off in a boys' basketball game.

Monticello pushed the ball down the floor as they looked to score baskets in transition. Monticello’s

Matt Todd was all over the floor. He came up with mid-range jump shots and layups. His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball in spots where he could shoot it.

Albany got everyone involved in the offense. They passed the ball around the 3-point line looking to beat Monticello off the dribble.

Albany called a timeout with 12:34 left in the first half. The score was Monticello 15, Albany 6.

Todd did a good job of making layups in transition. If Todd didn’t think he had a good shot, he would pass it off to one of his teammates.

Albany went to a zone defense that made Monticello pass the ball around the three-point line and take time off the clock.

Albany looked to get steals in their defense and come up with layups.

Monticello struggled to shoot in the first half.

At halftime the score was Monticello 33, Albany 19.

As the second half got underway Albany kept on attacking the basket getting mid-range jump shots and layups.

Albany went to a zone defense. They wanted to make Monticello take deep three-point shots. That didn’t work as Monticello made mid-range jump shots and layups.

Todd continued to come up with deep three-point baskets. The defense had a difficult time slowing him down.

Albany called a timeout with 11:57 left in regulation. The score was Monticello 43, Albany 28.

Monticello came up with rebounds on the defensive end. They were able to push the ball down the floor and score on layups near the basket.

Albany struggled to shoot the ball in the second half. Even though they had difficulties shooting the ball they didn’t give up. They fought hard throughout the game.

Monticello came away with the 63-37 victory over Albany.

Monticello and Sartell-St. Stephen squared off in a boys' basketball game. The score went back and forth early.

Monticello’s Matt Todd came up with mid-range jump shots and layups. His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball in spots where he could shoot it.

Sartell got everyone involved in the offense. They did a good job of talking to each other on both ends of the floor.

Monticello pushed the ball down and scored baskets in transition. Monticello guard Reiz Useh got the ball to his teammates in spots where they could shoot it. He did a good job of running the offense.

At halftime the score was Sartell 37, Monticello 23.  

As the second half got underway Sartell continued to push the tempo and move the ball down the floor.

Sartell called a timeout with 16:21 left in regulation. The score was Sartell 37, Monticello 30.

Monticello got their offense going early in the second half.

Sartell passed the ball down the floor as they scored on fast breaks.

Todd continued to come up with huge mid-range jump shots in the second half. The defense had a hard time of slowing him down.

Sartell called a timeout with 10:23 left in the second half. The score was Sartell 45, Monticello 40.

Sartell kept on coming up with fast break layups.

The game was tied at 47 with just under 4:45 left in regulation.

There were many ties and lead changes late in the game.

Monticello came away with the 57-53 victory over Sartell.

MONTICELLO WENT UP AGAINST ORONO IN A BOYS BASKETBALL GAME

On Nov. 19 Monticello and Orono squared off against each other in a boys basketball game.

 

Both teams started in a zone defense. Orono looked to move the ball down the floor quickly as they looked to get baskets in transition.

 

Both teams struggled to shoot the ball early. Neither team was able to come up with a shot.

 

Monticello’s Rezi Useh looked to provide his team with energy. He wasn’t afraid to let his teammates know where they were supposed to be on the offensive end.

 

Orono’s Samuel Sustacek came up with some big mid-range jump shots that kept his team in the game.

 

The defensive pressure that Orono applied to Monticello made it difficult for them to make open shots.

 

Monticello kept clawing and came up with mid-range jump shots and layups late in the first half.

 

At halftime the score was Orono 33, Monticello 22.

 

Orono’s Thomas Lecy was all over the floor. He came up with huge mid-range jump shots and layups. The defense had a hard time slowing him down.

 

Lecy came up with 3-point baskets and was hard to slow down on the offensive end.

 

Monticello’s Tommy Schyma came up with huge shots in the second half. He was able to get past his defenders and get to the basket.

 

Orono was quicker than Monticello. Orono came away with the 70-55 victory over Monticello.

ST. CLOUD APOLLO WENT UP AGAINST MONTICELLO IN A BOYS’ BASKETBALL GAME

St. Cloud Apollo and Monticello went up against each other in a boys’ basketball game. The score went back and forth for a good portion of the first half.

Apollo used mostly man-to-man defense in the first half.

Monticello was able to get the ball into the hands of Matt Todd. Todd was able to come up with mid-range jump shots in the first half.

Neither team went on a run in the first half.

At halftime the score was Monticello 28, St. Cloud Apollo 19.

As the second half got underway Monticello continued to get the ball into the hands of Todd. Todd was all over the floor as he was able to come up with layups and mid-range jump shots.

Apollo continued to struggle to shoot the ball.

Monticello was able to make shots throughout the second half. Todd continued to come up with mid-range jump shots midway through the second half.

Monticello looked to trap St. Cloud Apollo on defense. Monticello was able to come up with layups in transition.

Monticello’s Tyler Frie came up with mid-range jump shots in the second half. His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball in spots where he could make it.

Monticello came away with the 61-49 victory over St. Cloud Apollo.  

The leading scorers for Monticello were Todd with 16 points and Frie with 14 points.

The leading scorers for Apollo was Ethan Novacinski with 13 points.

ALBANY WENT UP AGAINST MONTICELLO IN A BOYS’ BASKETBALL GAME

Albany and Monticello squared off in a boys’ basketball game. Albany looked to move the ball down the floor and score baskets in transition.

Monticello’s Tyler Frie came up with some huge mid-range jump shots.

Albany’s Joel Kline came up with layups. The defense had a hard time slowing down Kline.

Neither team went on a run in the first half.

There were several ties and lead changes in the first half.

Monticello was able to set the tempo late in the first half.

At halftime the score was Monticello 32, Albany 28.

As the second half got underway Albany came up with huge baskets.

Albany’s Kenny Weber was able to come up with mid-range jump shots. His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball in spots where he could shoot it.

Neither team went on a run early in the second half.

Monticello did a good job of getting everyone involved in the offense. They spread the ball around and did a good job of passing the ball to each other.

Weber got hot late in the contest. His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball in spots where he could shoot it.

Albany was able to make shots late in the contest.

Albany came away with the 75-63 victory over Monticello.

The leading scorers for Monticello were Frie with 19 points, and Grathwohl with 11 points.

The leading scorers for Albany were Reaker with 23 points and Weber with 19 points.

MONTICELLO TOOK ON MINNEAPOLIS WASHBURN IN THE CLASS 3A STATE QUARTERFINALS

Monticello and Washburn went up against each other in the Class 3A state quarterfinals.

 

Washburn looked to push the ball down the floor and score baskets in transition. Washburn looked to get the ball into the hands of Chase Coley. Coley looked to get the ball on the low block and was able to score on layups.

 

Washburn was able to score baskets in transition. Monticello was in a zone defense. They wanted to force Washburn to take long three-point shots.

 

Monticello looked to get the ball inside to Emily Gruber. Gruber was able to make layups.

 

Monticello turned the ball over and Washburn was able to take advantage of that as they were able to make layups on offense.

 

Monticello called a timeout with 6:35 left in the first half. The score was Washburn 16, Monticello 8.

 

Washburn continued to hit shots late in the first half.  

 

Both teams played very well on the defensive end. Neither team let the other team take open shots.

 

At halftime the score was Washburn 24, Monticello 20.

 

As the second half got underway both teams continued to push the ball down the floor.

 

Monticello’s Gruber was all over the floor. On the offensive end she was able to get her mid-range jump shot to fall. Her teammates did a good job of getting her the ball in spots where she could shoot it.

 

Monticello called a timeout with 12:21 left in regulation. The score was Washburn 41, Monticello 36.

 

Coley came up with some big mid-range jump shots late in regulation. Her teammates did a good job of getting her the ball in spots where she could shoot it.

 

Washburn called a timeout with 8:28 left in regulation. The score was Washburn 47, Monticello 45.

 

Gruber kept on coming up with big shots late in regulation.  

 

Monticello called a timeout with 6:27 left in regulation. The score was Washburn 52, Monticello 47.

 

Washburn continued to push the tempo late in the contest. They were able to slow down the Monticello offense late in the game.

 

Washburn came away with the 62-53 victory over Monticello.

 

The leading scorers for Monticello were Gruber with 24 points and Sawatzke with 11 points. The leading scorer for Washburn was Coley with 29 points.

SIMLEY TOOK ON MONTICELLO IN A GIRLS’ BASKETBALL GAME

Simley and Monticello went up against each other at Hopkins High School as part of the Breakdown USA Tip Off Classic.

 

Monticello started the game in a man-to-man defense. Neither team went on a run early in the first half. There were many ties and lead changes in the first half.

 

Monticello was able to slow down the Simley offense as they made it difficult for them to score.  

 

Simley was really able to slow down the Monticello offense.

 

Simley strung some baskets together late in the first half.

 

At halftime the score was Monticello 26, Simley 22.

 

As the second half got underway the score went back and forth. Neither team went on a run. Simley strung some baskets together and they were able to take a lead early in the second half.

 

The score went back and forth throughout the second half. Neither team went on a run.

 

The game came down to the wire. Neither team gave up easy basket.

 

In a game that was close throughout Monticello came away with the 50-46 victory over Simley.

DELaSALLE TOOK ON MONTICELLO IN THE SEMI-FINALS OF THE 2013 MSHSL STATE GIRLS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

Minneapolis DeLaSalle took on Monticello in the semifinals of the Minnesota State High School League tournament.

It took while for each team to get into an offensive rhythm.

At the first media timeout with 13:45 left in the first half the score was DeLaSalle 4 and Monticello 2.

DeLaSalle was able to get into an offensive shooting rhythm as they were able to share the ball and get everyone involved in the offense.

Monticello didn't give up they kept on moving the ball around.

It was a defensive battle was each team went back and forth throughout.

Monticello made a run at DeLaSalle the score with 12:30 left in regulation was DeLaSalle 42 and Monticello 25.

DeLaSalle did a good job of spreading the ball around the three-point line and getting into an offense. Tysenna Johnson was all over the floor. She was able to make shots down the stretch.

DeLaSalle was all over Monticello throughout the whole game.

DeLaSalle was to strong for Monticello. In the end DeLaSalle came away with the overwhelming 67-42 victory over Monticello.

The leading scorers for Monticello were Grace Sawatzke with 13 points and Bailey Bechtold with 10 points.

The leading scorers for DeLaSalle were Patiance Griffin with 18, Allina Starr with 17 and Tyseanna Johnson with 15 points.
