ST. PAUL JOHNSON TOOK ON MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST HIGH SCHOOL IN A TWIN CITIES CROSSOVER SERIES FOOTBALL GAME

St. Paul Johnson took on Minneapolis Southwest High School in a football game. It was the Twin Cities crossover game. It is where the Minneapolis city conference takes on the St. Paul city conference based on where teams finished in their conference. St. Paul Johnson came into the game with a record of 4-3 overall and a conference record of 4-1. Southwest also came into the game with a record of 4-3 and a conference record of 4-1.

Southwest kicked off to Johnson to start the game. Johnson got the ball on their 27 yard line. Johnson started off on a running series. They looked to keep the ball on the ground for the most part. Keng Xion ran for 71 yards for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was good.

With 10:50 left in the first quarter the score was Johnson 7 and Southwest 0.

Johnson kicked off to Southwest after the touchdown. Southwest got the ball into the hands of Trayvon McKinney. He was able to pick up a few yards and also was able to get some big first downs. Southwest fumbled the ball on the 5 yard line and Johnson recovered.

Johnson looked to keep the ball on the ground. Johnson's Doug Siedschlag was able to slip through the Southwest defenders and pick up some needed yards. But it was not enough though because they had to punt the ball to Southwest.

Southwest looked to get the ball into the hands of Dantavian Sears. Dantavian Sears was all over the field. He was able to get way from the defenders. Southwest was not able to get a first down and they had to punt the ball back to Johnson.

Johnson started a drive on their 5 yard line. The Southwest defense stepped up big and was able to slow down the Johnson offense. Southwest got the ball back on downs.

Southwest looked to get the ball down the field as quick as possible.

Southwest called a timeout with 22.1 seconds left in the first quarter.

At the end of the first quarter the score was Johnson 7 and Southwest 0.

Southwest got the ball to start the second quarter. Maurice Alexander scored a touchdown on a short two yard run. The extra point attempt was good.

With 11:51 in the second quarter the score was tied at 7.

Southwest kicked off after the touchdown. Johnson kept the running attack alive in the second quarter as they started off each series running the ball. Johnson tried some trick plays and were able to gain some small yards. Johnson had to punt the ball back to Southwest.

Southwest got the ball on the 37 yard line. Southwest had trouble picking up yards as they committed a few violations in a row. They had to punt the ball to Johnson.

Johnson was not able to get into a running grove and the Southwest defense was able to slow down the Johnson offense. Joe Segelstrom picked up a big reception and was a first down. Johnson was not able to convert on fourth down and that gave the ball back to Southwest.

Southwest got the ball back and got it into the hands of Dantavian Sears. He was able to pick up a first down.

Southwest called a timeout with 1:17 left in the second quarter.

DeAnthony McKinley got a first down for Southwest. On the next play Southwest was picked off.

At halftime the score was tied at 7.

Johnson kicked off to Southwest to start the third quarter. Southwest started with the ball on their 15 yard line. Trayvon McKinney got the ball from the get go as Southwest offense looked to pick up some major yardage early on.

Southwest was not able to get a first down and they had to punt the ball to Johnson.

Johnson got the ball back on offense. They got the ball on the 16 yard line. Johnson threatened to score midway through the third quarter. They attempted a 22 yard field goal but were unsuccessful.

Southwest got the ball back after the failed field goal attempt. Southwest was not able to get a first down and they had to punt the ball to Johnson. Johnson fumbled the ball on the kickoff and Jimmy Roth for Southwest recovered it to give them the ball back.

Southwest got the ball on the 35 yard line after the Jimmy Roth recovery of the punt. Camden Knuckles picked up a big reception that brought the ball to the nine yard line. Camden Knuckles got a 25 yard pass for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was good.

With 4:19 left in the third quarter the score was Southwest 14 and Johnson 7.

Southwest kicked off after the touchdown. Johnson was not able to move the ball on offense and they had to punt the ball to Southwest.

Trayvon McKinney ran 97 yards for Southwest and he coughed it up on the four yard line and but recovered it.

At the end of the fourth quarter the score was Southwest 14 and Johnson 7.

Southwest got the ball on the ball on the four yard line to start the fourth quarter. DeAnthony McKinley scored a touchdown on a four yard run. The extra point attempt was no good.

With 11:15 left in the fourth quarter the score was Southwest 20 and Johnson 7.

Southwest kicked off after the touchdown. Johnson's Tra Griffin picked up 40 yards on a nice run. That moved the chains down the field. Tra Griffin continued to pound the ball down the field. Johnson threatened to score late in the quarter.

Southwest took a timeout with 6:41 left in the fourth quarter.
John Plaschko for Johnson caught a pass in the end zone for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was good.

With 6:35 left in regulation the score was Southwest 20 and Johnson 14.

Trayvon McKinney picked up some good yards for Southwest. Southwest couldn't pick up a first down and they had to punt it back to Johnson.

Johnson turned the ball over with 1:53 left in regulation. That gave Southwest the ball for the last series of the game. 

Johnson called a timeout with 1:15 left in the game.

Southwest came away with the 20-14 victory over Johnson. I though that both teams played well but in the end Southwest was able to hold their ground and come up with some big stops and get the ball into the end zone.

SOUTHWEST TOOK ON SOUTH IN A HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME

Under a nice stiff wind blowing across the field for most of the game Minneapolis Southwest took on South in a high school football contest. South started with the ball. South was not able to get a first down and they had to punt the ball to Southwest.

Southwest on offense was able to move the ball down the field. They were not able to get a first down and South recovered on downs.

South looked to keep the ball on the ground for most of the first quarter. They were able to get first downs. The Southwest defense did step up and slow down the progress of the South running backs.

Southwest kept the ball on the ground. The running backs were able to get past the South defenders. Southwest punted the ball to South on 4th down and 5 yards to go.

South took over on the 46 yard line.

At the end of the first quarter the score was tied at 0.

South showed off their running skills as they looked to slice their way through the Southwest defense. South threatened to score midway through the second quarter. Southwest stepped up their defense and was able to stop South's offense and prevented them from scoring.

Southwest got the ball back after they tuned it over on downs. Southwest was not able to get a first down and they punted it back to South.

South was not able to get a first down and they punted it away to Southwest. Southwest's DeAntony McKinley picked up some good yardage on a few plays. He was very confidant running with the ball. Southwest got picked off and turned it over.

At halftime the score was tied at 0.

Southwest picked up a big run to start the third quarter. Southwest threatened to score on their first drive of the quarter.

South took a timeout with 8:42 left in the third quarter.

Southwest’s Maurice Alexander found the end zone for a touchdown the extra point attempt was good.

With that touchdown the score was Southwest 7 and South 0.

South got the ball after the touchdown.

Maurice Alexander scored a touchdown for Southwest. The extra point attempt was no good.

Kaleb Pitchard came up with a big run for South. They looked towards the end zone because they wanted to score a touchdown.

At the end of the third quarter the score was Southwest 13 and South 0.

South got the ball to start the fourth quarter.

Southwest's Dantavian Sears ran for 92 yards for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was good. With that touchdown the score was Southwest 20 and South 0.

South got the ball back after the touchdown. Southwest got a safety and scored two more points for the Lakers.

DeAnthony McKinley scored a touchdown with 1:28 left in regulation. The two point conversion was no good. With that touchdown the score was Southwest 28 and South 0.

Southwest was able to get the ball back. They were not able to get a first down. Southwest punted the ball back to South. The ball ended up on the two yard line.

Southwest came away with the 28-0 victory over South. After the game I was able to talk to Southwest's head coach John Biezuns and DeAnthony McKinley about the game.

WASHBURN TOOK ON RIVAL SOUTHWEST IN A FOOTBALL CONTEST


The Minneapolis Washburn Millers took on their rival Minneapolis Southwest Lakers in a football game. It was the first time that Southwest has hosted a night football game on its home field. Southwest plays their home games at Pershing Park which is located a few blocks away from the school. These two teams are rivals. They are located 2.5 miles from each other. It has become one of the heated rivalry games in the Minneapolis City Conference. Southwest came into the game with a record of 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. Washburn came into the game with a record of 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference and are atop of the Minneapolis City Conference.

Washburn kicked off to Southwest to start the game. Jeffery Jones kicked the ball off for Washburn. Southwest got the ball on the 35 yard line. Southwest was not able to get a first down on their first drive so they punted the ball to Washburn.

Washburn got the ball on their 24 yard line. Washburn's Kyle Hughes found a hole and was able to pick up a first down. Washburn went for it on fourth down and was able to pick up a first down. Jeffery Jones picked up a first down. Washburn threatened to score midway through the first quarter. Washburn was not able to convert on fourth down so they turned the ball over to Southwest.

Southwest got the ball on their 19 yard line. Southwest called a timeout with 3:54 left in the first quarter.

The Washburn defense stepped up and was able to slow down the Southwest offense. Southwest punted the ball back to Washburn on fourth down. Jeffrey Jones was able to find holes in the Southwest defense and was able to find the end zone with 1:21 left in the first quarter for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was no good.

With 1:21left in the first quarter the score was Washburn 6 and Southwest 0.

Southwest got the ball back after the Washburn touchdown. Southwest was not able to get a first down so they punted the ball back to Washburn.

Washburn called a timeout with 32.3 seconds left in the first quarter.

Southwest punted the ball back to Washburn. Washburn's Raymonte Maynard found the end zone for a touchdown with 9.7 seconds left in the first quarter. The extra point attempt was no good. Southwest was penalized on the play so Washburn retried the two point conversion again and that also failed.

With 9.7 seconds left in the first quarter the score was Washburn 12 and Southwest 0.

After one quarter of play the score was Washburn 12 and Southwest 0.

Southwest got the ball to start the second quarter. Camden Knuckles caught a pass for a touchdown with 9:25 left in the second quarter. The extra point attempt was no good.

With 9:25 left to go the score was Washburn 12 and Southwest 6.

Southwest kicked off to Washburn after the touchdown. Washburn threatened to score and they found the end zone with 6:26 left in the second quarter on a Jeffrey Jones for a 20-yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was not good.

The score with 6:26 left in the second quarter the score was Washburn 18 and Southwest 6.

Southwest Dantavian Sears found the end zone for a touchdown. The two point conversion was not good. There was a flag that went against Washburn. Southwest retried the extra point attempt after a Southwest timeout and the two point conversion was not good.

With 3:13 left in the second quarter the score was Washburn 18 and Southwest 12.

Southwest kicked off to Washburn after the touchdown.

Southwest took a timeout with 3:02 left in the second quarter with the score being Washburn 18 and Southwest 12.

Washburn called a timeout with 13.0 seconds left in the second quarter.

At halftime the score was Washburn 18 and Southwest 12.

Southwest kicked off to Washburn to start the third quarter. Washburn had it third and 14 yards to go. They were not able to get a first down and they had fourth and 9 to go and they punted the ball to Southwest.

Southwest got the ball back. Washburn's defense was able to hold the Southwest defense. Southwest had the ball on fourth down and 15 yards to go and they were not able to get a first down so they turned the ball over on downs back to Washburn.

Washburn looked to push the ball down the field as quickly as they could. They used short running plays to get past the Southwest defense. Southwest was able to pin Washburn deep in their zone and made Washburn punt the ball on fourth down and 22 yards to go. Southwest got the ball on Washburn's 11 yard line.

At the end of the third quarter the score was Washburn 18 and Southwest 12.

Southwest got the ball to start the fourth quarter.

Washburn took a timeout with 10:54 left in the fourth quarter.

Washburn continued to look for ways to score. They found the end zone again with a short run by Jeffrey Jones for a 20-yard gain   The two point conversion was no good.

With 3:07 left in regulation the score was Washburn 24 and Southwest 12.

Washburn kicked off to Southwest after the touchdown.

In a very good competitive contest Washburn came away with the 24-12 victory over Southwest.

MINNEAPOLIS EDISON TOOK ON MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST IN A FOOTBALL GAME

Minneapolis Edison took on Minneapolis Southwest in a high school football game. Southwest kicked off to Edison to begin the game.

Edison got the ball first. Edison looked to keep the ball on the ground as they focused on the running attack. Hassan Robertson was able to pick up a first down for Edison.

Southwest picked up some unadvised penalties midway through the first quarter.

Edison did go to the air on a few downs. They wanted to keep Southwest on their toes. Will Kalber-Taylor intercepted a pass and took it 84 yards to end zone for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was good. With 8:19 left in the first quarter the score was Southwest 7 and Edison 0.

Southwest kicked off after they scored a touchdown. Edison got the ball on the 29 yard line. Edison continued to look to get the ball down the field. They had to punt the ball back to Southwest.

Southwest Dan Champion picked up some big yards as well as a first down late in the quarter.
DeAnthony McKinley scored a touchdown with 2:04 left in the first quarter. The extra point attempt was good. With that touchdown the score was Southwest 14 and Edison 0.

Southwest kicked off to Edison again after the touchdown. Jimmy Roth came up with an interception to give Southwest the ball back. Southwest continued to get the ball into the hands of DeAnthony McKinley. Southwest went long and Al-Jureay found the end zone on a 50 yard touch reception. The extra point attempt was good.

At the end of the first quarter the score was Southwest 21 and Edison 0.

Southwest kicked off to Edison to start the second quarter. Edison was not able to get a first down.

Dantavian Sears scored a touchdown for Southwest on a 55 yard run. The extra point attempt was no good.

With 9:44 left in the second quarter the score was Southwest 27 and Edison 0.

Southwest kicked off to Edison and Edison fumbled the ball. Southwest's Camden Knuckles scored a touchdown with 9:06 left in the second quarter. The extra point attempt was good. The score was Southwest 34 and Edison 0.

Edison got the ball back after the touchdown. They continued to gain yards on the offensive end. Edison was able to get a first down with 7:25 left in the second quarter. Southwest was able to get to Edison's quarterback.

Kevin Terry from Southwest recovered a fumble and scored a touchdown with 3:40 left in the second quarter. The extra point attempt was good.

With 3:40 left in the second quarter the score was Southwest 41 and Edison 0.

Dantavian Sears scored a touchdown with 1:49 left in the second quarter. The extra point was good. With that touchdown the score was Southwest 48 and Edison 0.

Southwest's Jacob Dolezal intercepted a pass and scored a touchdown and the extra point attempt was good.

At halftime the score was Southwest 55 and Edison 0.

Southwest got the ball to start the third quarter. Southwest's Dantavian Sears found the end zone with 9:47 left in third quarter. The extra point was good.

Southwest kicked off to Edison after the touchdown. Hassan Robertson picked up some huge yardage on a nice run for Edison.

Southwest's Camden Kunckles was all over the field. He knew where the holes were in the defense and was able to run through them. D'Tavius Williams was also all over field. D'Tavius Williams scored a touchdown with 3:44 left in the third quarter. The extra point attempt was good.

With 3:44 left in the third quarter the score was Southwest 69 and Edison 0.

Edison looked to get into the end zone late in the third quarter. They threatened to score with 2:47 left in the third quarter. 

Trevor Daily scored a touchdown with 2:30 left the third quarter. The two point conversion was good.

Southwest got the ball back after the touchdown.

At the end of the third quarter the score was Southwest 69 and Edison 8.

Southwest attempted a 43 yard field goal to start the fourth quarter. It was no good.

Southwest got the ball back and they were able to drive the length of the field and get the ball into the red zone.

Southwest's D'Tavius Williams scored a touchdown with 7:00 left in the fourth quarter. The extra point was good. The score was 76-8.

Southwest came away with the 76-8 victory over Edison.

REGION 6AAAAA QUARTERFINAL GAME HOPKINS AND MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST TOOK TO THE FIELD

In region 6AAAAA football it was Minneapolis Southwest against Hopkins in the quarterfinal game. Hopkins was seeded second in the region and Southwest seventh. Hopkins was 6-2 coming into the game. Southwest was 4-4.

Southwest kicked off and Hopkins took it to the 35 yard line where they started out running the ball. On Hopkins’ first drive Jonny Mydra caught a pass for touchdown. The extra point was good. With 9:45 left in the first quarter the score was Hopkins 7 and Southwest 0.

Southwest got the ball after the Hopkins touchdown. They looked to keep the ball on the ground. Evan Gray was Southwest’s main receiver. Aryton Scott did his share of keeping the ball and running with it under center. Aryton Scott found the end zone with 4:45 left in the first quarter. The two point conversion was no good. After that touchdown the score was Hopkins 7 and Southwest 6.

Hopkins got the ball back after the Southwest touchdown. Hopkins’ Treyvon Smith caught some nice passes early in the game. He was able to catch passes when he was triple teamed. Hopkins’ Trevon Smith rushed for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was good. With 50.4 seconds left in the first quarter the score was Hopkins 14 and Southwest 6.

Southwest got the ball back after the Hopkins touchdown.

After the first quarter the score was Hopkins 14 and Southwest 6.

Southwest got the ball to begin the second quarter. They started with third down and on fourth down they decided to punt the ball away.

Hopkins got the ball back and they were on an attack in the end zone, sending receivers toward the end zone on almost every play. Ben Christopher caught a pass for a Hopkins touchdown with 9:26 remaining in the second quarter.

After the touchdown the score was Hopkins 20 and Southwest 6.

Hopkins quarterback Bill Gregg did a good job directing the Hopkins offense. He knew where his players were on the field.

Southwest got the ball back and they tried to get to the end zone. Aryton Scott used some nice footwork to fend off defenders as he scampered down the field. When he was not running the ball himself he was handing off to his running backs.

Aryton Scott was picked off by Tavaughn Blair in the end zone to give Hopkins the ball back. Romar Danals had a nice gain to set up Adam Bevis for a Hopkins touchdown. With 4:11 in the second quarter the score was Hopkins 27 and Southwest 6.

Hopkins looked to score late in the second quarter and they were able to do that as Romar Daniel found the end zone for a touchdown with 2:15 left in the second quarter. The extra point was good the score after the touchdown was Hopkins 34 and Southwest 6.

Hopkins kicked off to Southwest to begin the third quarter. Even Gray looked sharp after the half time intermission. He was able to skirt around the field with the ball when he was given it. Southwest threatened to score midway through the third quarter. With 7:12 in the third quarter Aryton Scott scored a short run touchdown. Sam Beaver scored the 2 point conversion. The score was Hopkins 34 and Southwest 14.

Hopkins was able to string together a nice long drive and they chewed up a lot of time on the clock in the third quarter. DeAndre Adams scored a Hopkins touchdown with 27.9 seconds left in the third quarter.


The score at the end of the third quarter was Hopkins 41 and Southwest 14.

Southwest found the end zone on a Damian Papenfus touchdown. The two point conversion was not good. With 10:30 left to go in regulation the score was Hopkins 41 and Southwest 20.

Danny Kernan made a huge reception for a touchdown and Sam Beaver made a catch for the two-point conversion. With 3:21 left in regulation the score became Hopkins 41 and Southwest 28.

Hopkins was able to come away with the victory over Minneapolis Southwest by the final of 41-28.

I was able to talk with the Hopkins players and Head Coach John DenHartog and Trevon Smith and Bill Gregg about the season and the game.

MINNEAPOLIS WASHBURN EXCAPES IN OVERTIME TO BEAT MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST

The Minneapolis Washburn Millers took on the Minneapolis Southwest Lakers in a heated rivalry. Southwest got the ball to begin the game. Southwest was able to use the pass and the run game early in the first quarter. Southwest was on fourth down with 17 to go for the first down and lined up like they were going to go for the first down. But Aryton Scott the quarterback punted the ball away into an empty backfield where Washburn took over.

Washburn was not able to convert on fourth down and they punted it back to Southwest. Southwest looked to get the ball into Evan Gray’s hands. Gray is a quick running back and he is best when he can get into the open field and run. He also can juke around his defenders and make long runs easy. Classic.

The Washburn defenders did a good job of covering Southwest in the first quarter. They made it difficult for Southwest to complete passes.

At the end of the first quarter the score was tied at 0.

Both teams played very aggressively. They were looking to get at each other the whole first half.

Aryton Scott’s passes were a little off in the first half. He was over throwing his receivers. Southwest was not able to convert on third downs and that forced them to punt the ball more often than they would have liked.
Both of the defenses have put on a good showing in the first half. Neither team was able to go for the big play yet at this point in the game.

Southwest kicked off to Washburn to begin the third quarter. And they were off running as Cedric Chappell found big holes in the Southwest defense.

Washburn’s Montrell Wade found the end zone to score a touchdown with 9:09 left to go in the third quarter. The extra point was no good. With that touchdown the score was Washburn 6 and Southwest 0.

Southwest threatened to score late in the third quarter. They got the ball inside the 20-yard line. Washburn’s defense stood strong though as they were able to wrap the Lakers up. The Lakers went for it on fourth down and 6 yards to go. Southwest was not able to convert the fourth down and they turned the ball over to Washburn.

At the end of the third quarter the score was Washburn 6 and Southwest 0.

As the fourth quarter started Southwest threaded to score. Southwest was not able to convert on fourth down and they turned the ball over on downs.

Southwest’s Evan Gray was able to find the end zone with 8:41 left to go in regulation to tie the score at 6 apiece. The extra point attempt was no good.

Southwest marched down the field again and they were determined to find the end zone.

With 3:42 left in the fourth quarter back Aryton Scott was able to find the end zone for a Southwest touchdown. The extra point was no good. With that touchdown the score was Southwest 12 and Washburn 6.

With 32 seconds left in regulation, Washburn’s Marchea Wade scored on a running touchdown. The extra point was no good.

At the end of regulation the score was tied at 12. Each team got four downs and they started on the 10 yard line to either score a touchdown or a field goal.

Washburn got the ball first and they made touchdown on a Montrell Wade running play. The two point attempt was good making the score Washburn 20 and Southwest 12.

On Southwest’s attempt Aryton Scott scored the touchdown. The two point conversion was no good. The final was Washburn 20 and Southwest 18.

MINNEAPOLIS ROOSEVELT TOOK ON MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST IN A CONFRENCE FOOTBALL SHOW DOWN

The Minneapolis Southwest Lakers and the Minneapolis Roosevelt Teddies football teams clashed in early October. The Lakers kicked off to the Roosevelt Teddies. On Roosevelt’s first drive Devante Riser came up with some good running plays. early in the first quarter. Roosevelt looked to keep the ball on the ground early. They threatened to score on their first dive but they could not convert on fourth down.

Starlon Pruitt for of Roosevelt played very aggressively in the first quarter. He was all over the field. He was used to carry the ball in short yardage situations.

At the end of the first quarter the score was tied at 0.

The start of the second quarter the Roosevelt Teddies threatened to score as they got the ball with in the twenty yard line. Roosevelt was able to find the end zone when Devante Riser had a short yard touchdown.

With that touchdown the score was the Minneapolis Roosevelt Teddies 7 and Minneapolis Southwest 0.

Minneapolis Southwest got the ball back and they were looking to score. Then they coughed it up and they gave it back to Roosevelt deep in their territory.

Both teams really got after it. Khalf Vant found Shane Hollie in the end zone in a 47-yard touchdown. The extra point attempt was good. With 1:20 left to go in the second quarter the score was Roosevelt 14 and Minneapolis Southwest 0.

At the half the score was Roosevelt 14 and Southwest 0.

Southwest got the ball to begin the third quarter. They were looking to score quickly. Danny Kernan found the end zone with 11:37 left in the third quarter for the touchdown from a pass from Aryton Scott. With 11:37 left in third quarter the score was Roosevelt 14 and Minneapolis Southwest 6.

Khalef Vant found a big hole in the Southwest defense as he was able to gain major yardage and then On the next play Judge Rissman intercepted the ball to give Southwest an interception possession.

Aryton Scott was tacked in the end zone for a Roosevelt safety. Roosevelt looked to score again late in the quarter as they kept driving the ball into the end zone. Then they were intercepted to give Southwest the ball back.

At the end of the third quarter the score was Roosevelt 16 and Southwest 6.

Roosevelt threatened to score on their first drive of the fourth quarter. They did just that as Khalef Vant had a two-yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown. The extra point was good. With 9:04 remaining the score was Roosevelt 23 and Minneapolis Southwest 6.

With 7:24 left in the fourth quarter Aryton Scott found Danny Hupp in the end zone for a Southwest touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good. With 7:24 left in the fourth quarter The score was Roosevelt 23 and Southwest 12.

Devante Riser came up with a nice catch and a long reception to bring the Teddies into scoring chances. But Southwest’s Sam Beaver intercepted the ball on the two-yard line.

Ayrton Scott found major ground and found Sam Beaver who was covered by five Roosevelt players for a Southwest touchdown. The two-point conversion was intercepted by Devante Riser. With that touchdown the score was Roosevelt 23 and Minneapolis Southwest 18.

Both teams played very well the whole game. Minneapolis Roosevelt was able to come away with the hard fought 23-18 victory.

MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST TOOK OUT MINNEAPOLIS SOUTH IN CONFERENCE SHOWDOWN

Minneapolis South and Minneapolis Southwest took to the football field on a cloudy afternoon.

On the opening drive, Southwest’s John Berry scored a rushing touchdown to give the Southwest Lakers a 6-0 lead. The two-point conversion attempt failed.

The Minneapolis Southwest quarterback Ayrton Scott did a good job of getting set and people in place. John Berry got another Southwest touchdown.

The two-point conversion was good.

With 5:26 in the first quarter the score was Southwest 14 and South 0.

Southwest was looking to get the ball into Aryton Scott’s hands. He kept the ball a few times as he tried to juke and jive the South defenders.

At the end of the first quarter the score was Southwest 14 and South 0.

Both of these teams did a good on the defensive end as they both battled to get the ball. Southwest was able to keep pounding the ball up the field.

Southwest found the end zone again as Danny Kernan scored on a short touchdown run. The extra point was no good.

South got the ball back and they tried to make something happen. They did find the end zone as Lamarr Sulivan got the touchdown. He scored the touchdown but he made a dive in the end zone. The touchdown was good but the extra point was not.

After that touchdown the score was Southwest 20 and South 6.

Southwest looked to both air it out and run with it. Sam Beaver made some nice long passes from Aryton Scott in the first half.

Southwest was able to find the end zone again as John Berry scored another touchdown with under a minute left in the second quarter. The two-point conversion was no good.

South fumbled the ball on the 15-yard line to give the ball back to Southwest where they let the clock run out with 16.9 seconds left.

At half time the score was Minneapolis Southwest 26 and Minneapolis South 6.

Minneapolis Southwest got the ball to begin the third quarter. They were looking to get the ball into their quarterback’s hands. Aryton Scott has become very agile he knows the plays and he has been able to adjust. South has been able to pick off some his passes.

The Lakers have done a good job on both sides of the ball, as they have been able to fend off the tiger attack. South is playing very hard they have not given up.

Evan Gray for Southwest has done a good job in this game. He really has come up and made some nice catches during the game.

Aryton Scott has found the end zone as he scores a rushing touchdown for the Southwest Lakers. Damian Papenfuss made the two-point conversion. The score after that touchdown was Minneapolis Southwest 36 and Minneapolis South 6.

On South’s next drive they got intercepted and they gave the ball back to Southwest.

At the end of the third quarter the score was Minneapolis Southwest 34 and Minneapolis South 6.

As the fourth quarter got underway, the Southwest Lakers got very excited. They have played well throughout game.

Evan Gray found the end zone for the Lakers. They are going to try to find the end zone again and they do just that on a short run by Aryton Scott for the two point conversion. With that touchdown the score was Southwest 42 and South 6.

South went on the attack, as they wanted to find the end zone and try to get something going. They were able to find the end zone on a Chris Hatcher touchdown catch. With that touchdown with 2:04 remaining in regulation the score was Southwest 42 and South 12.

Minneapolis South gave it once last shot as they tried to make a mad dash to the end zone as time was winding down in the game. South was able to find a touchdown as Soly made a touchdown reception Chris Hatcher made the two-point conversion. With 29 seconds left in the fourth quarter the score was Southwest 42 and South 20.

Minneapolis Southwest was able to come away with the 42-20 victory over Minneapolis South.

MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST TOOK ON MINNEAPOLIS NORTH

The Minneapolis Southwest Lakers took on the Minneapolis North Polars. Southwest started the game with the ball. They were able to get short running yards up the field. Getting off to a quick start is key to this Southwest team. David Coffee wants to score on every drive possible. Ayrton Scott found the end zone on a quarterback keeper for a two yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt failed. With 6:58 in the first quarter the score was Minneapolis Southwest 6 and Minneapolis North 0.

After the Southwest touchdown North was looking to do something. They wanted to get the ball down the field as they wanted to run through holes in the Southwest defense. Marcus Littlejohn got a touchdown with 3:12 remaining in the first quarter. The two point conversion was good. The score after the touchdown and conversion was North 8 and Southwest 6.

North tried to air it out many different times throughout the first half. North was not afraid to run with the ball either.

At the end of the first quarter the score was Minneapolis North 8 and Minneapolis Southwest 6.

Southwest had the ball going on a drive to start the second quarter. In the middle of the drive Marcus Thames picked off another pass for an interception. Robert Cannady found the end zone with 8:06 remaining in the second quarter for a North touchdown. With 8:06 to play in the second quarter the score was Minneapolis North 14 and Minneapolis Southwest 6.

After the North touchdown Southwest was not able to convert on the next drive. They had to put the ball back to the Polars. North made threats of scoring on the drive as they were able to march down the field. They tested the Southwest. Then they were not able to convert on fourth down and they turned it over to the Lakers.

At half time the score was Minneapolis North 14 and Minneapolis Southwest 6.

North got things going early in the third quarter. They were able to march down the field and find the end zone on the first drive in the third quarter on Carlton Littlejohn’s short carry. The two point conversion failed. After that touchdown the score was Minneapolis North 20 and Minneapolis Southwest 6.

Southwest again took control of the football after the North touchdown. Southwest continued to pound the ball down the field. Aryton Scott found Evan Gray. Gray was able to make some head way down the field. Southwest was intercepted in the end zone so that gave North the ball back on the 20 yard line.

North’s Robert Cannady was able to make a pass and he took it to the end zone in a hurt. He played well the whole game and he was one of many of the leaders on the North’s team. He has been all over the field in this game doing whatever he could to propel the Polars. The score after three quarters was Minneapolis North 26 and Minneapolis Southwest 6.

Southwest wanted to get something going at the beginning of the fourth quarter. As the fourth quarter got underway, North had the ball and they looked to chew up some major yards, They were able to score a touchdown. The extra point was good. With 9:02 in the fourth quarter the score was Minneapolis North 32 and Minneapolis Southwest 6.

Minneapolis Southwest threatened to score midway through the fourth quarter. Evan Gray was able to find the end zone and he scored a touchdown on a short run. The score with 7:41 left in the contest it was North 32 and Southwest 12.

Both teams battled it out in the fourth. North was able to strike again with 3:00 in regulation as they were able to get a touchdown. The two point conversion was no good. With 3:00 left in the contest the score was Minneapolis North 38 and Minneapolis Southwest 12.

Southwest wanted to try to find the end zone but was not able to muster anything on its last drive.

North was just able to make plays throughout the game. Southwest could not find the end zone when they needed to. Both of these teams put up a great fight and battled each other the whole game. But in the end Minneapolis North was able to come away with the 38-12 victory over Minneapolis Southwest.

MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST TOOK ON DULUTH CENTRAL

The Minneapolis Southwest Lakers took on the Duluth Central Trojans at the Duluth Public School Stadium. On the first drive Damian Papenfuss had a 61 yard kick off run for the first Southwest touchdown. The extra point attempt was good. With 11:43 in the first quarter the score was Minneapolis Southwest 7 and Duluth Central 0.

Minneapolis Southwest was once again able to come back up with the football on a fumble recovery. Southwest again threatened to score when they were on the four yard line. And they did just that, as Evan Gray was able to find the end zone for a short run. Danny Kernan was able to make the two point conversion catch with 9:08 remaining in the first quarter. The score was Minneapolis Southwest 15 and Duluth Central 0.

Central wanted to get things started with their ground game. They found many opportunities to get the ball to different running backs. They were also working on their short game, with several carries of 3-6 yards at a time. Duluth Central was able to find the red zone late in the first quarter. This was the first time they posed a threat to score. And Duluth Central was able to find the end zone with 2:33 in the first quarter. With the two point conversion good, the score was Minneapolis Southwest 15 and Duluth Central 8.

The Trojans were able to hold back the Lakers and they forced them into a fourth and nineteen. After Southwest's punt, Central recovered it on the 23 yard line. But first quarter time ran out and the first quarter score was Minneapolis Southwest 15 and Duluth Central 8.

Early in the second quarter, Southwest had some difficulty holding on to the football. Southwest coughed up the football to at their 28 yard line to Central at 9:48.

Duluth Central looked to use their run game as they worked to try to pound the ball right down Southwest's throats. But they too had a problem with turnovers, coughing the ball up. Minneapolis Southwest was able to come up with the turn over.

Central was able to come up with the football and were able to make gains down the field and again made another threat to get into the end zone. As Central looked to get the ball into the end zone, Southwest was charged with a pass interference with 2:38 left in the first half.

Duluth Central was able to capitalize again on a Minneapolis Southwest penalty. Sticking with their short run attack, Central's Kyle Johannessen found the end zone on a two yard scamper for a touchdown. The two point conversion was also good.


In a tough first half for both teams the score was Minneapolis Southwest 15 and Duluth Central 16 at half time.

At the start of the third quarter both of the teams were fired up and they wanted to give it everything they had. Minneapolis Southwest had the ball near mid-field, trying to get things moving towards there end zone. But Central's defense prevailed and Central took control of the ball on downs.

The third quarter play was mostly kept between the 15 yard lines. Central threatened to score late in the third quarter, again getting into the red zone. Central's Joey Janchery was able to make a short drive down the middle of the field, setting up a short 1 yard play. On the next play they scored six.

Evan Gray was able to make a nice kickoff return and get the Lakers deep into Central's field. Southwest looked deep with Aryton Scott's 25 yard pass. But it was too much for the outstretched Sam Beaver on this first try. But then on the next play they ran the same play this time Scott connected with Beaver for a Southwest touchdown. Southwest's two point conversion was unsuccessful. On the two point conversion try there was something that David Coffey the head coach didn’t like. He went out to argue his point to the officials and he was given a verbal warning about arguing the call.

Southwest got it started again as Evan Gray came through with a 16 yard touchdown run with 3:14 left in regulation. The two point conversion was good by Aryton Scott as scantered into the end zone.

Aryton Scott was once again in charge tonight as he was able to come up with some huge plays for the Minneapolis Southwest Lakers.

One more time the Lakers threatened to score but stopped just short at the four yard line.

Minneapolis Southwest Lakers held onto the victory in a heck of a battle. You have to give a lot of credit to this Duluth Central team. They were tough and they played with a lot of passion and emotion.

The final of the game was Minneapolis Southwest 29 and Duluth Central 22.

MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST TAKES ON EDISON IN SEASON OPENER

Under the new direction of first year football coach Dave Coffee, Minneapolis Southwest went up against Minneapolis Edison to begin the 2009 football season.

Edison began the game on offense. There first attack was a passing drive. They wanted to get the ball in the air early but they were not able to complete passes on their first drive of the game. The Minneapolis Southwest Lakers looked confused in their opening defensive series. They had to burn a quick time out with 11:20 in the first quarter. Edison wasn’t able to convert in their first drive and they turned the ball over on downs their first series.

Coach Coffee instilled a wishbone offense and the team is still getting used to running it. With 7:05 left in the first quarter, Sam Riley was able to make a short run for the first Southwest touchdown. They went for the two point conversion and it was successful.

With 7:08 in the first quarter the score was Southwest 8 and Edison 0.

Southwest was able to score again on another short running play with 2:40 in the first quarter. Danny Hupp was able to find the end zone with an interception with 2:10 in the first quarter. The extra point was good. After that touchdown the score was Southwest 21 and Edison 0. On the next drive Aryton Scott was able to find the end zone again, as he was able to run in for a touchdown. The extra point was good and the score was Southwest 28 and Edison 0

At the end of the first quarter the score was Minneapolis Southwest 28 Edison 0.

On the opening drive of the second quarter the Southwest Lakers were able to find the end zone again, but the extra point attempt was no good.

Edison looked to run the ball early in the second quarter. They were unsuccessful as they were met by the Southwest Laker defenders. Edison tried to get something going on the offensive end midway through the second quarter, but they were not able to get anything accomplished.

Southwest got the ball back again. Aryton Scott found the end zone and scored a touchdown.

Edison got the ball back again and they were able to string together a short drive and got a first down on short dump passes.

At half time the score was Southwest 40 and Edison 0.

At the start of the third quarter, Edison kicked off to Southwest. Southwest was able to cover a bunch of territory on the field. Ayrton Scott was able to rush the ball for a huge gain but was stopped on the one yard line. Southwest fumbled the ball on the one yard line.

Evan Gray was able to tumble his way into the end zone for a touchdown. After the touchdown, the score was Southwest 46 and Edison 0.

Edison tried once again to get their running game in order in the third quarter but the Southwest Laker defenders were there, stepped up and shut them down again.

Edison showed some light late in the fourth quarter but they were not able to make it to the house. Southwest was able to make another run at the goal line. Once again they were able to find the goal line again with another touchdown and the extra point was also good. With 3:29 in regulation, the score was Southwest 53 and Edison 0.

The final of the game was Southwest 53 and Edison 0.

I WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE TO COVER THE SOUTHWEST EDINA REGION FOOTBALL GAME

The press box was quite full at the Edina sports complex, when the Minneapolis Southwest Lakers came over to play the Edina Hornets. One of the guys that were sitting in the booth was John Millea, from the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Here is his story in Wednesday's Minneapolis Star Tribune.

THE EDINA HORNETS STING THE MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST LAKERS

Minneapolis Southwest kicks off to Edina in the region quarter final game. The Minneapolis Southwest Lakers come out on defense. On Edina's first drive, Ledrius Aaron picks off an Edina pass on their first possession.

On the Southwest Lakers first drive, Lee gets the ball and finds the end zone. The extra point is good and with 7:24 here left to go in the first quarter, it is Edina 7 and Minneapolis Southwest 0.


Southwest gets the ball back and Reggie Gandy has a short gain here on his first drive. The Lakers drive down the field and it's now at 4th and 9 yards to go. They come up short and give the ball back to Edina.


Edina has gotten the ball back here and they are driving down the field. They are in the in good position to score. Anders Lee has found the end zone again, as he scores another touchdown. That was Lee's second touchdown.

The Hornets kicked off again to the Lakers. Ledarius Aaron got the ball and is charging up the field. Elliot Mathue is trying to find Ledarius Aaron, and he connects for a Southwest first down. Mathue has found Reggie Gandy and Southwest has a first down. Elliot Mathue keeps the ball and is running the ball up the field. Reggie has gotten the ball for a gain and has gotten another first down. The Lakers are charging down the field. Elliot Mathue has found Dominque Dawson for a Minneapolis Southwest touchdown. The two point conversion is no good with 2:26 left to go in the first quarter. The score is Edina 13 and Southwest 6.

Minneapolis Southwest kicks off and they try an onside-kick and have recovered the ball. On the next play, Mathue can't find any one deep down the field. Southwest is trying to get something going here, late in the first quarter. The Lakers have 4th down and 10 yards to go, and they get a delay of game. Its 4th and 15 and they have to punt it away to the Hornets.

The Hornets have gotten the ball back here. Anders Lee is rushing the ball late in the first quarter. Ander's Lee is looking sharp here in this game here. Colin Moynihan is also getting his share of the ball's in this game.

At the end of the 1st quarter, the score is Edina 13 and Minneapolis Southwest 6.

On the first drive of the second quarter, the Hornets have come out hungry. On the next play, Anders Lee has come up big, got the ball, and is having a good game. Colin Moynihan got a one yard touchdown. Stephen Asp made the two point conversion. With that touchdown and two point conversion, the score is Edina 21 and Minneapolis Southwest 6.

The Lakers get the ball back after the touchdown. The Lakers are trying to get something going here in the second quarter. The Hornets swarm the quarterback for a loss on third down, and they have to put the punt team on the field.

The Hornets go deep and Joey Herring comes up with a big catch and a first down. They are on the 6 yard line. Edina is charging and looking to sting again, midway through the second quarter. Anders Lee found Joey Herring again and the Hornets look to score. Colin Moynihan scores a touchdown. The extra point is good, and the score is Edina 28 and Minneapolis South West 6.

The Lakers are trying to get something going and Mathue gets sacked on a 10 yard loss. Mathue, again, is trying to get something going, as he scrambles up the field. With fourth down and a mile to go to get a first down, the Lakers have to punt.

Edina has the ball back and they are trying to get something going late in the second quarter. Anders Lee has just gotten sacked by Greg Gandy from Southwest. Anders Lee has just found David Newman for a 15 yard advantage. The Hornets are at fourth down and Anders Lee is going for a first down. Anders Lee is trying to find David Newman and he over shoots him. The Hornets are trying to find the end zone. The Hornets are charging down the field and they just another first down. Both teams are fighting hard here in the first half. Edina's Anders Lee has found Joey Harring for 5 yards. Anders Lee found the end zone and scored another touchdown. The extra point is good.

Southwest is going to try to get something going here late in the second quarter. The Lakers don't need to panic. The Lakers try to find the end zone but come up short.

At half time, the score is Edina 35 and Minneapolis Southwest 6.

As the second half gets underway, Edina kicks off to the Lakers. Reggie Gandy got the ball and then fumbles it. The Edina Hornets recover the ball on the seven yard line. Stephen Asp gets a 7 yard touchdown run for the Edina Hornets. On the extra point attempt, there was an off-sides call that went against the Lakers. Then the Hornets move up five yards and they try the extra point attempt again and make it. With 10:15 left to go in the third, the score is Edina 42 Minneapolis Southwest 6.

Alex Marquette has come in to become the new Edina quarterback. We will have to see what he can do. He has gotten the Hornets back into this game. Alex Marquette scores another Edina touchdown. The extra point is up and good. With 7:00 left to go in the third quarter, the Score is Edina 49 and Minneapolis Southwest 6.
The Lakers got it back here and they are back deep in their end zone. They are going to have to go deep to get the ball in to the Hornet territory. Elliot Mathue is trying to find different receivers here in this game. Elliot Mathue has just found Ledarius Aaron for a Southwest first down. Elliot Mathue has found Sam Beaver and they just got another first down. Elliot Mathue has found Ledarius Aaron again and they are now 4th down and 1 yard to go. They try to go for it and they come up short. They turn it over on downs again.

Anders Lee has come back into this game for the Hornets. The Hornets will try to score again here late in the quarter. The Hornets are going to have to punt here for the first time tonight. Reggie Gandy receives the ball and gets swarmed by the Hornets, but the Lakers have gotten the ball.

At the end of the third quarter, the score is Edina 49 and Minneapolis Southwest 6.

Minneapolis Southwest has the ball here as the fourth quarter is underway. Elliot Matheu has found Domininque Dawson. The Southwest Lakers have been passing the ball a lot in this game. Elliot Mathue was picked-off by Nate Carlson and the Lakers turned the ball over.

The Hornets are trying to score again and are pushing the ball up the field. This game is kind of getting out of hand here for the Lakers. All they can do is hold on and play this game out.

In a game that has gotten out of control from the beginning, the Edina Hornets come out and beat Minneapolis Southwest by the final of 49-6.

The Edina Hornets now move on to the Semi Final game against Eden Parrie.
