JAMESTOWN JIMMIES WENT UP AGAINST ST. CLOUD STATE UNIVERSITY IN A WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME


Jamestown Jimmies (Jamestown) out of North Dakota went up against St. Cloud State University Huskies in a women’s basketball game on Nov. 23.

Jamestown started in zone defense. St. Cloud State looked to push the ball down the floor and score baskets in transition.

Jamestown took a lot of time off the short clock. They did a good job of passing the ball around the three-point line.  

Jamestown called a timeout with 14:53 left in the first half. The score was St. Cloud State 12, Jamestown 6.

St. Cloud State was able to slow down the Jamestown offense down as the defensive pressure forced them to take contested shots.

St. Cloud State did a good job of getting everyone involved in the offense.

Jamestown went to a full court man-to-man full court press as they tried to make it hard for St. Cloud State to hit shots.

Jamestown’s Chelsey Frydenlund came up with some huge 3-point shots as she was left open behind the arch. Teammate Jessica Buck also came up with some big shots in the first half.

There was a media timeout with 9:48 left in the first half. The score was St. Cloud State 18, Jamestown 13.

Jamestown was able to make layups on fast breaks.

The score remained close throughout the first half. Neither team went on a run.

St. Cloud State’s Kyli Van Klei came up with some deep three-point shots.

There was a media timeout with 4:34 left in the first half. The score was St. Cloud State 24, Jamestown 20.

St. Cloud State continued to push the ball down the floor. They were able to score layups on the fast break.

At halftime the score was St. Cloud State 32, Jamestown 30.

St. Cloud State started the second half in a zone defense.  

Jamestown called a timeout with 18:02 left in the second half. The score was Jamestown 35, St. Cloud State 34.

St. Cloud State continued to make fast-break baskets.

The score went back and forth early in the second half.

Jamestown called a timeout with 15:47 left in the second half. The score was tied at 40.

St. Cloud State’s Lexy Petermann hit a mid-range jump shot over two defenders.

There was a media timeout with 14:56 left in the second half. The score was Jamestown 43, St. Cloud State 42.

St. Cloud State guard Betsy MacDonald called out plays that she wanted her team to run. If
MacDonald didn’t think that she had a good shot she was not afraid to pass the ball to her teammates.

St. Cloud State continued to push the ball down the floor and looked for fast break layups.

MacDonald was able to drive past the defenders as she was able to make layups.

There was a media timeout with 9:03 left in the second half. The score was St. Cloud State 54, Jamestown 48.

Jamestown called a timeout with 8:24 left in the second half.

Both teams battled for loose balls and rebounds.

St. Cloud State called a timeout with 7:03 left in the second half. The score was St. Cloud State 56, Jamestown 51.

MacDonald was able to hit a huge three-point shot basket.

St. Cloud State called a timeout with 5:20 left in the second half. The score was St. Cloud State 61, Jamestown 56.

St. Cloud State's Carley Jeffery came up with a deep three-point shot with the assist going to MacDonald.

St. Cloud State was able to string some baskets together late in the second half.

St. Cloud State called a timeout with 1:00 left in the second half. The score was St. Cloud State 69, Jamestown 60.

St. Cloud State passed the ball around the three-point line using a lot of time off of the shot clock.

St. Cloud State came away with the 70-62 victory over Jamestown.

The leading scorer for Jamestown was Buck with 24 points.

The leading scorers for St. Cloud State were Van Kiei and Pertermann each with 11 points. MacDonald ended up with 7 points.

BEMIDJI STATE WENT UP AGAINST ST. CLOUD STATE IN A FOOTBALL GAME

Bemidji State and St. Cloud State went up against each other in a football game on Nov. 1.

Going into the game Bemidji State came into the game with a record of 3-5 and were 3-1 in the NSIC North. St. Cloud State came into the game with a record of 3-5 and were 2-2 in the NSIC North.

St. Cloud State kicked off to start the game. The ball went into the end zone and was a touchback.

Bemidji State started on the 25 yard line. Bemidji State looked to keep the ball on the ground on their first series. On fourth-and-15 Bemidji State punted the ball. There was no return on the play.

St. Cloud State started on the 50 yard line. St. Cloud State starting quarterback was Nate Meyer.

Meyer was not afraid to use both the passing and running attack early. Taylor Berger came up with a first down reception. Jaden Huff ran 37 yards for a touchdown. The extra-point attempt was no good.

With 12:29 left in the first quarter the score was St. Cloud State 6, Bemidji State 0.

The kickoff went into the end zone for a touchback. Bemidji State took over on the 25 yard line.

Bemidji State was intercepted by Adam Josephson. St. Cloud State took over on the Bemidji State’s 30 yard line. Donte Starlin-Merriam came up with a first down run. Starlin-Merriam ran for three yards for a touchdown. The extra-point attempt was good.

With 9:39 left in the first quarter was good. The score was St. Cloud State 13, Bemidji State 0.

The ball went into the end zone for a touchback.

Bemidji State took over on the 25 yard line. Bemidji State’s quarterback Jordan Hein had looked to get the ball into the hands of Jordan Noskowiak for a first down. Bemidji State used both the run and pass attack on the drive. On fourth-and-12 Bemidji punted.

St. Cloud State took over on their own nine yard line. Matt Hentges came up with a huge reception for a first down.

St. Cloud State called a timeout with 3:41 left in the first quarter. The score was St. Cloud State 13, Bemidji State 0.

St. Cloud State’s Kasai Farris came up with a huge first down reception.

After one quarter of play the score was St. Cloud State 13, Bemidji State 0.

St. Cloud looked to get the ball into the end zone to start the second quarter. St. Cloud State attempted a 16-yard field goal which was good.

With 11:38 left in the second quarter the score was St. Cloud State 13, Bemidji State 0.

Bemidji State took over on their own 24 yard line. Bemidji State punted on fourth-and-long.

St. Cloud State took over on the 42 yard line. Berger came up with a 33-yard reception. Meyer came up with a nine-yard touchdown run. The extra-point attempt was good.

With 9:08 left in the second quarter the score was St. Cloud State 23, Bemidji State 0.

Bemidji State took over on the 35 yard line. Bemidji State couldn’t move the ball down the field. On fourth-and-eight they elected to punt the ball.

St. Cloud State took over near midfield. The St. Cloud State offense stalled and they turned it over on downs.

Bemidji State got the ball back and Hein they looked to move the ball down the field. On fourth-and-eight to go Bemidji State went for it. Bemidji State wasn’t able to get a first down so they turned it over on downs.

St. Cloud State took over on their own 35 yard line. St. Cloud marched down the field late in the second quarter. St. Cloud State looked to the end zone late in the quarter.

St. Cloud called a timeout with 2:58 left in the second quarter. The score was St. Cloud State 23, Bemidji State 0.

On fourth-and-15 St. Cloud State attempted a field goal. The field goal attempt was no good.

Bemidji State took over on the 20 yard line.

Bemidji State looked to move the ball down the field.

Bemidji State called a timeout with 1:01 left in the second quarter. Bemidji State Hein found Holder for a 17-yard touchdown reception.

The extra-point attempt was no good.

With 47 seconds left in the first quarter the score was St. Cloud State 23, Bemidji State 6. That was the score at halftime.  

Bemidji State kicked off to start the third quarter. St. Cloud State started on their 23 yard line.

Bemidji State got a safety with 12:53 in the third quarter.

St. Cloud State 23, Bemidji State 8 was the score after the safety.

St. Cloud State had difficulty moving the ball. On fourth down St. Cloud State punted the ball.

Bemidji State took over on their 25 yard line. Bemidji State punted on fourth down.

St. Cloud State got the ball back and looked to move the ball. St. Cloud State punted on fourth-and-two.

Bemidji State took over on their own 12 yard line. Bemidji State punted on fourth-and-two.

St. Cloud State got the ball back and Nate Miller found Taylor Burger who came up with a 70-yard touchdown run. The extra-point attempt was good.

With 6:16 left in the third quarter the score was St. Cloud State 30, Bemidji State 8.

Bemidji State took over after the touchdown. On fourth-and-10 Bemidji State punted.

St. Cloud State took over on the 12 yard line. The Bemidji State defense stepped up and was able to stop the St. Cloud State defense. St. Cloud State punted the ball on fourth down. Bemidji State fumbled the ball and St. Cloud State recovered the ball.

St. Cloud State punted on fourth-and-long.

Bemidji State took over near mid field. They couldn’t move the ball down the field. Bemidji State punted on fourth-and-18.

St. Cloud State took over on their own 15 yard line.

After three quarters of play the score was St. Cloud State 30, Bemidji State 8.

St. Cloud State called a timeout with 12:31 left in the fourth quarter. The score was St. Cloud State 30, Bemidji State 8.

St. Cloud State punted the ball on fourth-and-long. The ball went into the end zone for a touchback.

Bemidji State looked to get the ball down the field as they looked to get the ball into the end zone.

Bemidji State found the end zone on a Tahi Nomane on a seven-yard run. The extra-point attempt was no good.

With 8:22 left in the fourth quarter was St. Cloud State 30, Bemidji State 14.

Bemidji State got the ball back on a fumble on the kick off. Bemidji State found the end zone on a
Hein 10-yard pass to Josh Genske for a touchdown. The two-point conversion run by Nomane was no good.

With 6:17 left in the fourth quarter the score was St. Cloud State 30, Bemidji State 20.

St. Cloud State looked to the air as they wanted to keep the offensive rhythm going.

Bemidji State called a timeout with 4:37 left in the fourth quarter. The score was St. Cloud State 30, Bemidji State 20.

St. Cloud State punted on fourth-and-five. Bemidji State took over on the three yard line.

Bemidji State looked to get the ball down to the end zone late in the game. Bemidji State end zone on a Holder touchdown. The extra-point attempt was good.

With 1:11 left in the fourth quarter the score was St. Cloud State 30, Bemidji State 27.

St. Cloud took over on the 50 yard line. They didn’t run a play.

St. Cloud State came away with the 30-27 victory over Bemidji State.

Berger and Starlin-Merriam talked to the media after the game. On the Bemidji State defense,
Berger said that he,” Wants to get the last two wins of the season.”

St. Cloud State head coach Scott Underwood said, “That they had good energy though out the game”.
Starlin-Marriam talked about his touchdown. He said he, “Followed blocks to get into the end zone. Ran Power a lot.”

ST. CLOUD STATE TOOK ON ST. THOMAS UNIVERSITY IN A WOMEN’S BASKETBALL EXHIBITION GAME

On Nov. 6, St. Cloud State and St. Thomas University played each other in an exhibition women’s basketball game.
 
Both teams came out with a lot of intensity. St. Thomas started the game in a zone defense. They wanted to force St. Cloud State to take long shots.
 
St. Cloud State couldn’t hit a shot early in the contest. The defensive pressure got to them as they couldn’t get their offense going.
 
St. Cloud State went to a man-to-man defense. They wanted to slow down the St. Thomas offense.
 
St. Cloud State called a timeout with 14:06 left in the first half. The score was St. Thomas 10, St. Cloud State 3.
 
Betsy MacDonald for St. Cloud State entered the game around the 13:00 mark left in the first half.
 
She looked to give the stagnant offense some life. On the defensive end, MacDonald was able to slow down the player she was guarding. She knew where the ball was on the floor at all times.
 
St. Thomas did a good job of switching between man-to-man and zone defense. They really slowed down the St. Cloud offense.
 
St. Thomas did a good job of getting the ball out of the defensive basket and getting the ball down the floor as they looked to get transition baskets.
 
At halftime the score was St. Thomas 33, St. Cloud State 22.
 
As the second half got underway both teams continued to push the ball down the floor. St. Cloud State caught fired as they were able to go on a 10-0 run and string five baskets together.
 
St. Thomas called a timeout with 17:08 left in regulation the score was St. Thomas 37, St. Cloud State 32.
 
St. Thomas caught fire as multiple players stepped up and hit long three-point shots.
 
St. Cloud State called a timeout with 14:50 left in regulation. The score was St. Thomas 43, St. Cloud State 35.
 
MacDonald continued to look to make shots and run the St. Cloud State offense. She knew where her teammates were on the floor and she was able to get them the ball in spots where they could make baskets.
 
St. Thomas was a little quicker than St. Cloud State was.
 
MacDonald came up with a nice steal and she was able to pass it to her teammate for an assist.
 
MacDonald did a good job of getting the ball to her teammates if she thought that they had a better shot. But MacDonald was not afraid to shoot it if she thought she had a good shot.
 
St. Cloud State never made a big run in the second half. They had to play catch up the whole second half and they were not able to catch up. Both teams played very hard and well throughout the game. In the end however St. Thomas came away with the 66-56 victory over St. Cloud State.

40TH ANNUAL MINNESOTA STATE HIGH SCHOOL COACHES ASSOCIATION ALL STAR FOOTBALL GAME WAS A DANDY

Husky Stadium on the campus of St. Cloud State University was the place to be on June 29 for the 40th annual Minnesota State High School Coaches Association All Star Football Game. High school football coaches nominate players who they think are deserving to play in this game. A week before the game there is a training camp for players to quickly learn the offense and defense. Then, on Saturday afternoon they have a game. The teams are broken down into North and South teams.
 
The South kicked off to the North to start the game. Wyatt Schmidt kicked off for the South, resulting in a touchback.
 
North got the ball on the 20 yard line. On their first series they looked to keep the ball on the ground. Ashante Payne for North did a good job of keeping his feet moving while he was trying to fend off defenders while trying to get first downs. North was not able to get a first down on their first drive so they punted it away. Tucker Forsren kicked it to the South All Stars.
 
South got the ball on their own 26 yard line.  South looked to the pitch game as the North defenders rushed the line of scrimmage. South was not able to get a first down on their first drive of the game either, so they had to kick it back to the North on fourth and 17.
 
North got the ball on their own 47.  Nate Ricci kept the ball as he looked to gain yards on the ground.  South did a good job of getting to the North players and bringing them to the ground and stopping their drive.  North was able to get a first down.  North continued to pound the ball down the field on the ground. Jordan Hein for North found holes in the defense and he was able to get short yards as the North threatened to score late in the first quarter.  The North picked up another first down. Jordan Hein found Jake Wienke in the end zone for a touchdown. The extra point attempt by Daniel Sargeant was good.
 
After that touchdown the score was North 7, South 0.
 
North kicked off after the touchdown.  South went back to the running attack as they tried to beat their defenders down the field. South was not able to get a first down, so they punted the ball back to North.
 
North got the ball near their own 30. Payne was able to pick up some big yards on offense as the defense was not able to bring him to the ground.
 
At the end of the first quarter the score remained North 7, South 0.
 
North’s drive extended into the second quarter, though they punted on fourth and six.. South took over on their own 18.
 
South looked to get a first down on the first drive of the second quarter, as Eric Birth came up with a nice run and picked up a first down. South kept on getting the ball to Birth, as North had a hard time getting their hands around him.
 
South threatened to score midway through the second quarter.  The South kept the ball in the air as they looked to score on 5-10 yard hook routes.  The South looked to add three points as Schmidt attempted a 29 yard field goal.
 
South called a timeout with 8:10 left in the second quarter.  
 
Schmidt’s 36 yard field goal was good with 8:10 left in the first half. The North was able to step up on the defensive end and move South for the yardage. The score after the field goal was North 7, South 3.
 
North got the ball back to after the field goal and was able to march down the field as they were able to get into the end zone but they were unable to score.
 
Daniel Sargant for the North attempted a 39 yard field goal, but it was no good.
 
South took a timeout with 3:55 left in the second quarter.
 
South looked to go deep down the field and get a first down, and did just that. North was able to step up their defense and made it difficult for South to complete passes. South, however, was able to come up with some big plays in clutch situations throughout the game.  
 
Nick Waldvogel for South was all over the field, coming up with some nice catches and keeping his offense on the field.
 
Riley Donovan found Waldvogel near the end zone for a first down. Birth found the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown run. Schmidt attempted the point after attempt and it went through.
 
With 11 seconds left in the second quarter the score was South 10, North 7 -- which is how the half would end. North got the ball on the 35 yard line, but the clock ran out on a long passing play to wrap up the first half of action.
 
North kicked off to South to start the third quarter, with South taking over at their 38. South’s Riley
Donovan came up with a nice catch to get a first down. North’s defense came up big as they were able to slow down the South’s run and pass game in the middle of the third quarter.
 
Donovan came up with another big reception to get a fresh set of downs. South threatened to score as they got into the red zone. John DenHartog came up with a good run and kept the South in the game.  
 
DenHartog carried the ball two yards for a touchdown. The extra point attempt by Schmidt was good.
 
With 6:42 left in the third quarter the score was South 17, North 7.
 
North fumbled the ensuing kickoff and gave the ball right back to South. South attempted a field goal and Schmidt was not good.
 
With 4:37 left in the third quarter the score was South 17, North 7.
 
North got the ball back after the failed field goal attempt, and looked to keep the ball on the ground as they continued to chew up yards and look for holes in the defense.
 
North was able to come up with a first down. North switched between passing and running plays as they looked to confuse South’s defense.
 
South’s defense came up and stopped the North on fourth down and they got the ball back late in the third quarter.
 
At the end of the third quarter the score was South 17, North 7.
 
South was on offense at the start of the fourth quarter. They were not able to get a first down and they attempted a field goal. Wayatt’s field goal was short.
 
North got the ball back on their 17 yard line. North looked to pass to get first downs in the fourth quarter, but Danny McManus intercepted a pass to give the ball back to South.
 
South got the ball on their own 21 yard line. North looked once again to slow down both the running and passing attacks of South in the red zone.  On fourth and 7 yard South went for it, and were able to get a first down as Donovan came up with a nice catch from DenHartog.
 
The South threatened to score late in the fourth quarter, and made good as DenHartog found Donovan for a touchdown. Schmidt’s extra point was good..
 
With 8:23 left in regulation the score was South 24, North 7.
 
North got the ball back and looked to march down the field. South got the ball back on downs and Jordan Hine found Wieneke for a 14-yard touchdown pass.
 
The South came away with the 24-14 victory over the North. I thought that the game was a very good game. Both teams played hard and neither team gave up.
 
For the players this was a learning experience for them. They got to learn new football plays and meet different players from across the state. All of the players and coaches had fun in the week before the game and during the game.
 
I think that the Minnesota State High School Football Coaches Association does a great job of finding good players from across the state to partake in this game.
