ST. JOHNS WENT UP AGAINST ST. THOMAS IN A FOOTBALL GAME

It was a historic day at Allianz Field in downtown St. Paul as St. Johns and St. Thomas went up against each other in a football game. Allianz Field is the home of the Minnesota United Soccer team. On Oct. 19, American football was key was St. Johns and St. Thomas renewed their historic rivalry at Allianz Field.

St. John’s kicked off to start the game. St. Thomas took over on their own 25-yard line. St. Thomas looked to keep the ball on the ground on their first drive. St. Thomas moved the ball both threw the air and the ground. St. Thomas punted on 4th-down. The punt went into the end zone St. Johns took over on their own 20-yard line.

St. Johns was intercepted by Tommy Fuller. St. Thomas kept the running attack going as they looked to get into the red zone. St. Thomas Grant Slavik came up with a six-yard touchdown reception. The extra point attempt was good.

With 6:41 left in the first quarter. The score was St. Thomas 7, St. Johns 0.

St. John’s on their own 25-yard line. St. Johns couldn’t get a first down and punted on 4th-down.

With 3:23 left in the first quarter the score was St. Thomas 14, St. Johns 0.

St. Johns moved the ball down the field and 28, came up with a 28-yard touchdown reception. The extra point attempt was good.

With 1 second left in the first quarter, the score was St. Thomas 14, St. Johns 7.

St. Thomas started the drive on their own 25-yard line. Gabe Green came up with a 26-yard first down reception. St. Thomas couldn’t move the ball down the field, and they punted on 4th-and 5.

St. Johns looked to get into the end zone early in the quarter. St. Johns moved the ball down the field as they looked to get into the end zone. On 4th-and-4 from the 33-yard line St. Johns went for it and they were not able to come up with a first down.

St. Thomas took over on their own 30-yard line. St. Thomas moved the ball down the field.

St. Thomas took over on their own 25-yard line. St. Thomas kept the defense guessing if they were going to the passing attack or the ground game. The St. John’s defense slowed the offense down and St. Thomas punted on 4th-and-8.

St. Johns took over on their own 2-yard line. St. Johns moved the ball down the field, and they went to switching between the passing and running game. On 4th-and-16 St. Johns punted the ball.

St. Thomas took over on St. Johns’ 46-yard line.

St. Thomas got into the red zone as they looked to get into the end zone early in the quarter.  St. Thomas turned the ball over downs.

St. Johns got the ball on their own 6-yard line. St. Johns was once again on the move down the field as they looked down the field. St. Johns was determined to get into the end zone. St. Johns found the end zone on a 2-yard run by Kai Barber. The extra point attempt was not good.

St. Thomas took over on their own 27-yard line. St. Thomas moved the ball down the field but punted on 4th-down.

UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS INVITED TO THE SUMMIT LEAGUE

The University of St. Thomas is a Division III football school. They are currently part of the MIAC Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They have dominated the conference and they have been evicted from the conference because of being too good. 

After the 2018 season St. Thomas was evicted by the MIAC because of their success. 

According to multiple reports St. Thomas has been invited to the Summit League Conference which is a Division I league. 

If approved St. Thomas would have two more seasons in the MIAC then move to the Summit League. 

UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS WENT UP AGAINST HAMLINE UNIVERSITY IN A FOOTBALL GAME

On Sept. 21, St Thomas University and Hamline went up against each other in a football game. The weather was cloudy with a good chance of rain. St. Thomas had a record of 1-0 while Hamline had a record of 1-1. 

Hamline kicked off to start the game. St. Thomas got the ball on their own 33-yard line. Gabe Green came up with a 17-yard reception. St. Thomas moved the ball down the field quickly. St. Thomas Josh Parks came up with a 4-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion
 was not good. 

With 13:24 left in the first quarter, the score was St. Thomas 6, Hamline 0. 

Hamline took over on their own 27-yard line. Hamline’s Terrell Jones looked to find the holes in the defense. 

Hamline called a timeout with 12:11 left in the first quarter. 

Hamline’s Matt Miller came up with a first down reception. Hamline looked to get into the end zone midway through the first quarter. On 4th-and-14 Hamline went for it but were not able to come up with a first down. Hamline turned the ball over on downs. 

St. Thomas took over on their own 24-yard line. ST. Thomas Gabe Green came up with a first down reception. St. Thomas Josh Parks came up with an 8-yard reception. St. Thomas went for it on 4th-and-3.

Hamline took over on their own 25-yard line. Hamline once again tried to move the ball down the field. Hamline looked to march down the field. On 4th-and-5 Hamline went for it but was not able to come up with a first down and they turned the ball over on downs. 

St. Thomas Ronnie Jones came up with a 33-yard run. St. Thomas looked to get into the end zone late in the quarter. St. Thomas Nate Shoemaker came up with a huge reception that brought the ball to the 10-yard line. They kept the ball on the ground. St. Thomas came up with a touchdown on a 2-yard run by Wagner. The extra point attempt was good. 

With 4:16 left in the third quarter, the score was St. Thomas 67, Hamline 14. 

The ball went into the end zone for a touchback. Hamline took over on the 25-yard line. Hamline looked once again to take care of the ball and get it down the field. Hamline punted on 4th-and-6.

St. Thomas kept on grinding in the fourth quarter. They were determined to get into the end zone. Jones got the ball and looked to do just that on a short drive. Josh Kootmis came up with a 5-yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was good. 

With 13:24 left in the fourth quarter, the score was St. Thomas 74, Hamline 14. 

Hamline looked to move the ball down the field as Jones found some room and came up with a first down run. Hamline couldn’t move the ball down the field, so they elected to punt the ball on 4th-and-13. 

St. Thomas took over on their own 39-yard line. St. Thomas Jacob Miller came up with a huge 1st
 down run. That put the ball on the Hamline 43-yard line. Miller kept the ball and looked took the ball down the field. The defense stepped up and slowed down the St. Thomas offense. St. Thomas punted on 4th-and-12. 

Hamline took over on their own 15-yard line. Hamline punted on 4th-and-5. 

Neither team moved the ball late in the game. Both teams played hard, but St. Thomas was too powerful for Hamline. 

St. Thomas came away with the 74-14 victory over Hamline. 

TRINITY WENT UP AGAINST ST. THOMAS UNIVERSITY IN A FOOTBALL GAME

On September 7, Trinity and St. Thomas University went up against each other in a football game. 

Trinity kicked off and St. Thomas took over on their own 31-yard line. St. Thomas’ Josh Parks came up with a 13-yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt Tyler Knutson was good.

With 13:24 left in the first quarter the score was St. Thomas 7, Trinity 0.

Trinity took over on their own 15-yard line. Trinity fumbled the ball and St. Thomas took over. St. Thomas looked to get into the end zone again as they used both the passing and running attack. Stephen Wagner came up with a reception. On 4^th-and-7 Knutson attempted a 30-yard field goal which was no good. 

Trinity took over on their own 20-yard line. Trinity kept the ball on the ground as they looked to move the ball. They punted on 4^th-and-7. 

Tom Leffler came up with a huge run that put the ball on the 32-yard line.  Grant Slavik came up with a 27-yard touchdown catch. Knutson’s extra point attempt was good.

With 8:42 left in the first quarter the score was St. Thomas 14, Trinity 0.

Trinity took over on its own 21-yard line. Trinity’s Jeremiah Vaughn came up with a 12-yard reception. Trinity’s Nolan Brammer was able to get his receivers into the offense. On fourth-and-7 Trinity punted the ball. St. Thomas’s Malik Jackson came up with a touchdown reception.

Trinity took over on their own 25-yard line. The defensive pressure that St. Thomas applied made it difficult for Trinity to make offensive plays. Trinity punted on 4^th-and-1.

St. Thomas took over on their own 29-yard line. St. Thomas Tom Loeffler came up with long runs that turned into first downs. The defense had a hard time slowing him down. Stephen Wagner came up with a 17-yard run. Grant Slavik came up with a 17-yard touchdown reception. Knutson came up with the extra point attempt. 

With 3:35 left in the first quarter the score was St. Thomas 28, Trinity 0.

Trinity took over on their own 28-yard line. Trinity’s Nolan Brammer had a difficult time getting away from the St. Thomas defense. St. Thomas Sam English intercepted a pass and St. Thomas took over on the Trinity 40-yard line. 

St. Thomas kept the ball on the ground as they looked to move the ball down the field once again. Slavik came up with a 31-yard touchdown reception. The extra point attempt by Knutson was good. 

With 1:14 left in the first quarter the score was St. Thomas 35, Trinity 0. 

Trinity took over on their own 27-yard line. St. Thomas stepped up their defensive pressure and was able to get to the quarterback. 

After one quarter play the score was St. Thomas 35, Trinity 0.

Trinity took over on its own 21-yard line. Brammer had trouble getting the ball out of his hands. Khalid Humphreys came up with a 23-yard reception. Trinity tried to move the ball down the field late in the quarter. Jimmy Campbell came up with a 15-yard reception. Brammer fumbled the ball and St. Thomas recovered.

St. Thomas took over on their own 31-yard line. St. Thomas kept the ball on the field as they looked for first downs.

Campbell came up with a 16-yard reception for a first down. Marc Wallace came up with a first down reception. Trinity kept looking to get down the field. St. Thomas’s Trent Meyer came up with a sack on Brammer. On 4^th-and-28 Trinity punted. 

St. Thomas took over on their own 25-yard line. St. Thomas tom Loeffler came up with a 75-yard touchdown run. Knutson's extra point attempt was good. 

With 9:34 left in the third quarter the score was St. Thomas 56, Trinity 0. There was a penalty on Trinity. 

Trinity took over on their own 18-yard line. Campbell came up 18-yard first down reception. Wallace came up with an 8-yard reception. Derek Lowe came up with a 6-yard rush for a first down. 

Campbell came up with a 28-yard reception. St. Thomas’ Luke Glenna came up with an interception. 

St. Thomas took over on their own 17-yard line. St. Thomas switched quarterback Ronnie Jones. 

There was a penalty on Trinity. St. Thomas couldn’t move the ball down the field, and they punted on 4^th-and-17. 

Trinity took over on their own 23-yard line. Trinity tried to move the ball down the field as they had a lot of room on the field to move. They were not able to come up with a first down They punted on 4^th-and-1. 

St. Thomas took over on their own 34-yard line. Cole Wenzel got past the defense as he looked to make first downs.

Trinity looked to get the ball down the field. Godfrey came up with a 28-yard reception for a first down. Trinity kept the ball on the ground. St. Thomas hot hit with a roughing the passer infraction. Carter Andrade came up with a 38-yard field goal. 

With 9:21 left the fourth quarter the score was St. Thomas 62, Trinity 3. 

St. Thomas took over on their own 47-yard line. St. Thomas kept on moving the ball down the field. Josh Komis came up with a 13-yard run. Julian Cavin came up with a short run. 

Trinity called a timeout with 5:13 left to go in the fourth quarter. The score was St. Thomas 62, Trinity 3. 

St. Thomas turned the ball over on downs. 

Trinity took over on their own 10-yard line. Trinity was picked off by Mathew Bordure who ran it in for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was good. 

With 4:56 left in the fourth quarter the score was St. Thomas 69, Trinity 3. 

Trinity took over on their own 25-yard line. Trinity looked to air the ball out late in the game as they looked for the end zone. 

St. Tomas was too powerful for Trinity. Trinity couldn’t move the ball down the field and the defensive pressure was too much for Trinity to handle. 

St. Thomas came away with the 69-3 victory over Trinity. 

UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS’ ATHLETIC DIRECTOR RETIRES

The University of St. Thomas Athletic Director is set to retire. Steve Fritz, who has been the Tommies’ athletics director for 52 years, has decided to retire.

Fritz has coached men’s basketball at The University St. Thomas for 40 seasons, the first nine seasons as an assistant to Tom Feely and the next 31 as the head coach.

I have met and worked with Fritz for years and know him well. Fritz knows college sports well. He is involved in all sports at the head Athletic Director and works well with his coaching staff.

He will be missed at the University of St. Thomas.

MACALESTER WENT UP AGAINST ST. THOMAS IN A MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME

On Jan. 7,  Macalester squared off against St. Thomas in a men’s basketball game. St. Thomas jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead with 18 minutes left in the first half.

After a slow start by Macalester, they moved the ball down the floor and was able to knock down shots.

St. Thomas called a timeout with 15:08 left in the first half. The score was St. Thomas 12, Macalester 8.  

St. Thomas came up with steals and layups.

Macalester called a timeout with 13:04 left in the first half. The score was St. Thomas 19, Macalester 8.

Macalester was able to push the ball down the floor and was able to make layups.

St. Thomas was a lot quicker than Macalester. St. Thomas went to a trapping man-to-man defense and came up with steals and layups.

St. Thomas was able to get the ball into the hands of Taylor Montero and Marcus Alipate. Both of them were able to get to the basket and make mid-range jump shots and layups.

At halftime the score was St. Thomas 50, Macalester 20.

As the second half got underway Macalester looked to move the ball down the floor and score baskets in transition.  

St. Thomas continued to get the ball into the hands of Alipate came up with baskets early.

Even with a big lead St. Thomas didn’t quit attacking the basket and looking for layups.

St. Thomas came away with the 96-45 victory over Macalester.

The leading scorer for St. Thomas was Alipate with 18 points.

The leading scorer for Macalester was Brett Yaffe with 9 points.

ST. CLOUD STATE TOOK ON ST. THOMAS UNIVERSITY IN A WOMEN’S BASKETBALL EXHIBITION GAME

On Nov. 6, St. Cloud State and St. Thomas University played each other in an exhibition women’s basketball game.

 

Both teams came out with a lot of intensity. St. Thomas started the game in a zone defense. They wanted to force St. Cloud State to take long shots.

 

St. Cloud State couldn’t hit a shot early in the contest. The defensive pressure got to them as they couldn’t get their offense going.

 

St. Cloud State went to a man-to-man defense. They wanted to slow down the St. Thomas offense.

 

St. Cloud State called a timeout with 14:06 left in the first half. The score was St. Thomas 10, St. Cloud State 3.

 

Betsy MacDonald for St. Cloud State entered the game around the 13:00 mark left in the first half.

 

She looked to give the stagnant offense some life. On the defensive end, MacDonald was able to slow down the player she was guarding. She knew where the ball was on the floor at all times.

 

St. Thomas did a good job of switching between man-to-man and zone defense. They really slowed down the St. Cloud offense.

 

St. Thomas did a good job of getting the ball out of the defensive basket and getting the ball down the floor as they looked to get transition baskets.

 

At halftime the score was St. Thomas 33, St. Cloud State 22.

 

As the second half got underway both teams continued to push the ball down the floor. St. Cloud State caught fired as they were able to go on a 10-0 run and string five baskets together.

 

St. Thomas called a timeout with 17:08 left in regulation the score was St. Thomas 37, St. Cloud State 32.

 

St. Thomas caught fire as multiple players stepped up and hit long three-point shots.

 

St. Cloud State called a timeout with 14:50 left in regulation. The score was St. Thomas 43, St. Cloud State 35.

 

MacDonald continued to look to make shots and run the St. Cloud State offense. She knew where her teammates were on the floor and she was able to get them the ball in spots where they could make baskets.

 

St. Thomas was a little quicker than St. Cloud State was.

 

MacDonald came up with a nice steal and she was able to pass it to her teammate for an assist.

 

MacDonald did a good job of getting the ball to her teammates if she thought that they had a better shot. But MacDonald was not afraid to shoot it if she thought she had a good shot.

 

St. Cloud State never made a big run in the second half. They had to play catch up the whole second half and they were not able to catch up. Both teams played very hard and well throughout the game. In the end however St. Thomas came away with the 66-56 victory over St. Cloud State.

 

HAMLINE TOOK ON ST. THOMAS UNIVERSITY IN A FOOTBALL GAME

On Oct. 26, Hamline and St. Thomas University went up against each other in a football game. Hamline came with an overall record of 2-4, while St. Thomas had a record of 4-2.

 

Hamline kicked off to St. Thomas to start the game. St. Thomas got the ball on their own 31 yard line. St. Thomas came up with some nice plays on their first drive. Nick Waldvogel came up with some nice runs. He found holes in the Hamline defense. On fourth-and-four they went for it and were not able to come up with the first down.

 

Hamline started on their own 4 yard line. Hamline had difficulty moving the ball down the field. On their first drive they had many penalties that backed them up. Austin Dunkin did how ever came up with a first down on a less than a yard run. Hamline continued to get the ball into Dunkin’s hands. Naji El-Araba came up with a four-yard first down reception. There was a fumble on the play and Hamline came up with it. On fourth-and-two, Hamline punted the ball.

 

St. Thomas got the ball on their own 24 yard line.  Waldvogel came up with a ten-yard run. Jack Gilliland came up with a first down reception.  Waldvogel came up with another 14-yard reception for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was good.

 

With 2:32 left in the first quarter the score was St. Thomas 7, Hamline 0.

 

Hamline got the ball on their own 24 yard line. They were not able to get a first down so they punted it on fourth down.

 

St. Thomas got the ball on their own 42 yard line. Ferrazzo came up with a ten-yard reception for a first down. Ferrazzo came up with multiple first downs in the first half.  

 

After one quarter the score was St. Thomas 7, Hamline 0.

 

St. Thomas kept attacking on the ground as they looked to chew up the clock. On fourth-and-six St. Thomas elected to go for it. They were not able to get a first down and turned it over.

 

Hamline got the ball on their own 29 yard line. They looked to keep the ball on the ground.  On fourth-and-six, Hamline punted the ball. St. Thomas fumbled the ball and Hamline recovered it on the 43 yard line. Dunkin came up with the three-yard rush to move the chains. Dunkin fumbled the ball and St. Thomas came up the ball on that play.

 

St. Thomas came up with a first down on a Jack Gilliland 15-yard reception. Waldvogel kept coming up with some big plays for his team. St. Thomas used dump plays as they looked to move the ball in five-yard chunks. They did that successfully late in the second quarter. Tim McClanahan found Cole Kelly for a 23-yard touchdown reception.  

  

The extra point attempt was a trick play as the holder ran into the end zone for a two-point conversion.

 

With 6:59 left in the second quarter the score was St. Thomas 15, Hamline 0.

 

Hamline got the ball on their own 24 yard line. Hamline fumbled the ball and St. Thomas picked it up. John Gould came up with some nice runs late in the second quarter for his team as he was able to keep the clock moving. There was a personal foul on the defense and that brought the ball to the 10 yard line. Waldvogel came up with a four-yard touchdown run. The extra point was good.

 

With 3:28 left in the second quarter the score was St. Thomas 22, Hamline 0.

 

Hamline got the ball on their own 25 yard line.  The St. Thomas defense came up big as they were able to get to the quarterback and fluster him. The defense slowed down the Hamline offense. Hamline punted the ball on fourth-and-seven.

 

Gould came up with a 61-yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was good.

 

With 2:10 left in the second quarter the score was St. Thomas 29, Hamline 0. That score would hold until the half.

 

St. Thomas kicked off to Hamline to start the third quarter.  Hamline got the ball on their own 38 yard line. Duncan again came up with some big rushes for his team. Hamline looked to get into the endzone on their first drive of the third quarter. Hamline got into the end zone on a Duncan six-yard run. The extra point attempt was good.

 

With 9:38 left in the third quarter the score was St. Thomas 29, Hamline 7.

 

St. Thomas got the ball on their own 33 yard line. Waldvogel kept on coming up with big catches in the third quarter to move the chains. Alex Fenske completes a 55-yard pass to Dan Noehring in the end zone for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was good.

 

Hamline kept the ball on the ground. They continue to have trouble moving the ball on offense. They punted the ball on fourth-and-nine.

 

St. Thomas wanted to get into the end zone. St. Thomas fumbled the ball and Hamline recovered it.

 

Hamline moved the ball down the field on short passing routes. They were successful at making first downs late in the third quarter.

 

After three quarters of play the score was St. Thomas 36, Hamline 7.

 

Hamline turned the ball over on downs.

 

St. Thomas used a lot of clock in the fourth quarter. They waited a long time to get plays off as they looked to use a lot of time off the clock but not get a penalty. St. Thomas punted the ball on fourth-and-12.

 

Hamline got the ball on their own 8 yard line.  Hamline was not able to pick up a first down on fourth-and-two, so they elected to punt.

 

St. Thomas took over on the Hamline 40 yard line. Alex Fenske found Greg Kriege for a 25-yard touchdown. The extra point attempt was good.

 

With 7:22 left in the fourth quarter the score was St. Thomas 43, Hamline 7.

 

Both teams played hard down the stretch. Neither team gave up. The ball went up and down the field late in the contest. Neither team came up with any big plays late in the contest.

 

In a hard fought game that was one sided from the start St. Thomas came away with the 43-7 victory over Hamline.
