MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST TOOK ON EDEN PRAIRIE IN A BOYS BASKETBALL REGION GAME

On Feb. 27 Minneapolis Southwest traveled to Eden Prairie for a boys region 6AAAA basketball game.
 
Eden Prairie started in a zone defense. They looked to force Southwest to take long shots.  
 
Eden Prairie’s Grantham Gillard was all over the floor on the offensive end. He was not afraid to shoot deep three-point shots. If Gillard thought that his teammates were open he  would pass the ball to them.
 
Eden Prairie pushed the ball down the floor as they were able to score baskets in transition.
 
Southwest looked to trap on defense. Eden Prairie was able to dribble out of the trap and was able to get to the basket and hit shots.
 
Southwest’s Allen Edwards came up with steals on the defensive end. He was able to get to the basket on offense and make layups.
 
Southwest called a timeout with 9:50 left in the first half. The score was Eden Prairie 27, Southwest 18.
 
Edwards came up with some good plays on both ends of the floor. He was able to set his teammates up as they were able to get layups.
 
Eden Prairie switched up between man-to-man and zone defense throughout the first half. They were able to come up with steals and baskets off the turnovers. Blake Cashman was cash in the second half as he stepped up and knocked down layups and jump shots throughout the second half.
 
Southwest called a timeout with 5:08 left in the first half. The score was Eden Prairie 38, Southwest 20.
 
Eden Prairie swung the ball around the three-point line to take time off the clock late in the first half.
 
Southwest struggled to shoot the ball in the first half.
 
At halftime the score was Eden Prairie 47, Southwest 25.
 
As the second half got underway Eden Prairie continued to take the ball to the basket.
 
Eden Prairie called a timeout with 15:04 left in regulation. The score was Eden Prairie 56, Southwest 30.  
 
Southwest called a timeout with 13:42 left in regulation. The score was Eden Prairie 65, Southwest 32.
 
Southwest continued to attack the basket throughout the second half. Southwest’s Cam Ross came up with layups in the second half.  
 
Eden Prairie was too much for Southwest. Eden Prairie came 94-52 victory over Southwest. The leading scorers for Southwest were Ross with 24 and Smith with 14 points.
 
The leading scorers for Eden Prairie were Wallace with 18 points, and Cashman with 17 points, Glillard finished with 13 points.

MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST TOOK ON MINNEAPOLIS SOUTH IN A BOYS BASKETBALL GAME

On Feb. 17 Minneapolis Southwest and Minneapolis South squared off in a boys basketball game.
 
South looked to push the ball down the floor and get baskets in transition.
 
It took each team to get into a shooting rhythm.  
 
Southwest’s Akeem Smith and Allen Edwards had good floor communication when they were on the court. Edwards was able to get the ball into the hands of Smith’s hands and Smith was able to come up with layups.
 
South’s guard Kenley Farrow raced down the floor and was able to make layups in transition. If he didn’t think that he had a good shot he would kick it to one of his teammates for the assist.
 
South’s Oscar Campbell also brought the ball down the court and was able to get his teammates the ball. South did a good job of talking to each other.  
 
Southwest’s Cam Ross came up with layups in the first half. His teammates were able to get him the ball in spots where he could shoot it.
 
There were many ties and lead changes throughout the first half. Neither team went on a run.
 
Southwest’s Keion Alexander was all over the floor. He was able to knock down mid-range jump shots and layups consistently on the offensive end.
 
Edwards was able to take the ball coast to coast and come up with layups throughout the first half. He was not afraid to take the ball hard to the basket.
 
Farrow continued to come up with some big jump shots for his team.
 
South played a zone defense in the first half. Southwest was able to get through the zone defense and was able to get to the basket.
 
South was able to create steals off of their defense and they were able to come up with layups on the offensive end.
 
Both teams took a lot of time off the clock late in the first half. South swung the ball around the three-point line that made Southwest have to come out of their zone defense and play man-to-man.
 
At halftime the score was Southwest 39, South 38.
 
As the second half got underway both teams started on in a zone defense.
 
Southwest did look to continue to push the ball down the floor and score layups in transition.
 
Farrow kept his hot shooting touch going as he was able to keep knocking down mid-range jump shots throughout the second half.
 
South’s Taron Myers came up with some few deep three-point shots that gave his team the lead with just under 14:00 left in regulation.
 
Southwest came out flat to start the second half. South took advantage of that as they were able to attack the basket and hit their shots.
 
South’s Darrius Clinton came up with some deep three-point shots in the second half.  Southwest had a difficult time guarding him.
 
Southwest called a timeout with 10:06 left in regulation. The score was South 66, Southwest 52.
 
Southwest continued to attack the basket even though they had a hard time hitting shots. They didn’t quit shooting the ball.
 
Farrow kept on getting to the basket as he attacked the basket in the second half. Myers also came up with some layups throughout the second half.
 
South came out fired up in the second half. They did a good job of controlling the tempo of the game.
 
South looked like they had a lot more energy as they picked up the speed of the game.
 
Southwest didn’t back down in the second half. They did have a difficult time shooting the ball throughout the second half.
 
Southwest came to life late in the second half. They were able to cut the deficit from 15 to 8 with 3:46 left in the second half.
 
South kept on attacking the basket and getting the ball into the hands of Clinton and Farrow down the stretch.  
 
Southwest tried to make a late comeback but that fell short. South came away with the 91-76 victory over Southwest.
 
The leading scorers for Southwest were Ross with 24 points. Alexander with 15 points and Edwards with 13 points.
 
The leading scorers for South were Farrow with 23 points and Myers with 22 points.

MINNEAPOLIS ROOSEVELT TOOK ON MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST IN A BOYS BASKETBALL GAME

The Minneapolis Roosevelt Teddies took on the Minneapolis Southwest Lakers in a boys basketball game on Jan. 22. 
 
Both teams started in man-to-man defense.
 
Southwest’s Allan Edwards picked up two quick personal fouls and was replaced.
 
Southwest looked to push the ball down the floor and swing the ball around the three-point line. They looked to get layups.
 
Roosevelt called a timeout with 14:01 left in the first half. The score was Southwest 4, Roosevelt 0.
 
Southwest’s Lanick Knight looked to find a mid-range jump shot. He wasn’t afraid to shoot the ball.
 
His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball. His teammate Cameron Ross also came up with some nice jump shots.
 
Southwest came up with some nice defensive steals and was able to make layups off the turnovers.
 
Roosevelt’s Terrence Hicks came up with some good inside shots. He was not afraid to drive to the basket.
 
Knight stepped up and also was able to knock down some three-point shots.
 
Southwest’s AJ Ray got his team going offensively. He called out plays that he wanted run and he had very good court awareness.
 
Both teams dove on the floor after loose balls and rebounds on both ends of the floor.
 
Southwest’s Akeem Smith called out plays that he wanted run. He was a good floor leader as he let his teammates know where they were supposed to be on the floor.
 
Hicks kept on hitting inside and outside shots to keep his team in the game.
 
Southwest called a timeout with 5:09 left in the first half. The score was Southwest 24, Roosevelt 19.
 
The Southwest defense tightened up as they were able to slow Roosevelt down on the offensive end.  
 
The Roosevelt offense went cold late in the first half.
 
At halftime the score was Southwest 34, Roosevelt 29.
 
Edwards got hot from behind the three-point line to start the second half.  
 
Southwest continued to attack the basket. Knight came up with some big shots in the second half.
 
The Southwest offense came alive in the second half. They were able to get to the basket right past the Roosevelt defenders. Roosevelt couldn’t slow them down in transition.
 
Southwest just overwhelmed Roosevelt in the second half.
 
Southwest came away with the 84-49 victory over Roosevelt.
 
The leading scorer of Roosevelt was Hicks with 20 points.
 
The leading scorers for Southwest were Alexander and Ross each with 15 points, Knight with 14 points and Edwards with 13 points.

MINNETONKA TOOK ON MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST IN A BOYS’ BASKETBALL GAME

On Nov. 23, Minnetonka and Minneapolis Southwest went up against each other in a boys’ basketball game.
 
Minnetonka looked to set the tempo of the game early. They looked to push the ball down the floor and score baskets in transition.
 
Akeem Smith brought the ball down the floor for Southwest. He looked to get his teammates the ball in spots where they could make easy baskets.
 
Minnetonka’s Careino Gurley got his teammates involved in the offense. He did a good job of passing the ball to his teammates. He was able to get the ball into the hands of guard Amar Miller. Miller was able to step up and knock down some good shots.
 
Smith kept his team in the game. He was not afraid to shoot the ball from anywhere on the floor. If he thought that that he had a good shot he was not afraid to shoot it.
 
The score went back and forth throughout the first half. Neither team went on a run in the first half.
 
Camron Ross for Southwest was able to hit layups in the fast break. He was also able to beat his defender off the dribble.
 
Minnetonka called a timeout with 11:12 left in the first half. The score was Southwest 20, Minnetonka 18.
 
Smith did a good job of slowing down the guy that he has guarding. He guarded different players throughout the game.
 
Both teams dove on the floor after loose balls. These teams played with a lot of emotion and intensity.
 
Southwest’s Lanick Knight was all over the floor. He stepped up and was able to knock down some shots. His teammates did a good job of finding him in spots where he could shoot it.
 
The score continued to go back and forth throughout the first half. Neither team was able to go on a run.
 
Ross was not afraid to shoot the ball from wherever on the floor. He took it hard to the basket and was not afraid to attack the basket.
 
Both teams were a little sloppy late in the first half.  They each rushed their shots.
 
At halftime the score was Minnetonka 45, Southwest 35.
 
Southwest continued to push the ball down the floor to start the second half. Minnetonka came out firing on all cylinders. They were able to move the ball well and strung together some baskets and were able to slow down Southwest.
 
Southwest didn’t give up. They attacked the basket and they swung the ball around the three-point line and they looked for shots that they thought that they could make.
 
Minnetonka called a timeout with 12:13 left in regulation. The score was Minnetonka 62, Southwest 49.
 
Minnetonka kept the intensity up as they defended well.
 
Peter Weiss for Minnetonka came off the bench and played well.
 
Southwest was not able to hit shots down the stretch. Minnetonka was a little quicker than Southwest.
 
 Moses really played well for Minnetonka. He knew where he was supposed to be on the floor and he was not afraid to shoot the ball. He played with a lot of heart and passion. The defense had a hard time stopping him.
 
The game got off to a good start. Minnetonka started to pull away late in the first half and they were able to keep the energy going throughout the second half.
 
Minnetonka came away with the 91-70 victory over Southwest.  
 
The leading scores for Minnetonka were Moses with 33 points, Grant Steele with 12, Careino Gurley with 11 points, and Amar Miller with 9 points.
 
The leading scorer for Southwest was Knight with 21.

NEW LIFE ACADEMY TOOK ON MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST IN THE BREAKDOWN USA FALL LEAGUE

New Life Academy and Minneapolis Southwest went up against each other in a varsity match up in the Breakdown USA Fall League. This league gives high school teams a chance to play games in a regular tempo game.

The game got off to a quick start as each team raced up and down the court looking to make shots that they put up.

Southwest was a step quicker than New Life Academy and they were able to knock down some quick shots. Southwest was able to get shots inside the three-point line.

Southwest did a good job of spreading the ball around to all of the players. It looked like they knew where everyone was supposed to be on the floor.

Southwest's Tyler Eric Wayne Porch did a good job of finding his teammates. He knew where they were at all times and he was not afraid to pass them the ball if he thought that they had a good shot. His teammate Terral Dojorn Sampson did a good job of getting rebounds in the paint and putting the ball back up in the basket.

New Life Academy struggled to score in the first half. That didn't get to them as they kept on shooting the ball.

At halftime the score was Southwest 26 and New Life Academy 17.

New Life Academy came out and looked for quick shots early in the second half. They were not able to get the shots to fall in the opening minutes of the second half. They kept on plugging away anyway.

Porch was able to get some easy looks at the basket and was successful and making wide open shots for his team.

Southwest was able to get everyone involved in the offense and they were able to chew up clock in the second half while making shots.

Southwest's Cameron James Ross was all over the floor. He took the ball hard to the basket and was not afraid to shoot the ball if he thought that he had a good shot. Ross was successful at making shots that he put up, mostly shots within the three-point line. He was not afraid to pull the three-point shot although.

New Life Academy tried to make a comeback but was unsuccessful. In the end Minneapolis Southwest came away with the 54-45 victory over New Life Academy.
