MINNESOTA GETS THREE PLAYERS NAMED TO THE 2014 MCDONALDS ALL-AMERICAN BOYS BASKETBALL GAME

McDonald’s has put out a list of this year’s high school all-American boys basketball team. This year’s roster features three players from the state of Minnesota. Tyus Jones who plays basketball at Apple Valley high school and has signed to Duke University. Reid Travis from Minneapolis De La Salle High School and who will be attending Stanford University and Rashad Vaughn who went to Robbinsdale Cooper high school and is presently attending Findlay College Prep. Vaughn is the only recruit from Minnesota who is currently undecided on where he will be attending college.

 

The McDonald’s All American game will be Apr. 2 on ESPNU.

According to multiple sources Rashad Vaughn decided Tuesday to play his senior season at Findlay Prep in Las Vegas, Nev.

 

Vaughn is considered one of Minnesota’s top recruited basketball players in the class of 2014.

 

Vaughn played at Robbinsdale Cooper before deciding to transfer for his senior season.

SMF'S THOUGHTS ON RASHAD VAUGHN MOVE TO PREP SCHOOL

When I read that Minnesota basketball player Rashad Vaughn was leaving Robinsdale Cooper High School it surprised me a little bit initially, but then again, it didn't really surprise me.

To me, all of the three top recruits in the class of 2014 Tyus Jones, Reid Travis and Vaughn. Vaughn is a good player. Don't give get me wrong. I think that all of these players are very good player.

What I think that Travis and Jones have in common are they both play on the same AAU team, the Howard Pulley Panthers. Vaughn decided to play the 2013 summer circuit away from both Jones and Travis. I think that he did that  because he wanted to distance himself from the other two.

It will be inserting to see where Vaughn attends prep school at. We will be hearing a lot more about these three players in the near future. They all three have very good futures ahead of them.

RASHAD VAUGHN TO DEPART FROM COOPER, HEAD TO PREP SCHOOL

According to Marcus Fuller of the Pioneer Press, "Gophers recruiting target Rashad Vaughn decided with his family to attend a prep school and not finish his senior year at Cooper High School. Vaughn will decide in the next couple weeks among four prep schools, including Huntington Prep (W.Va.) and Findlay Prep (Las Vegas). "

Vaughn is considered one of the three big national recruits from Minnesota, along with Tyus Jones (Apple Valley) and Reid Travis (DeLaSalle).

NORTHSTAR HOOPS CLASH OF THE CLASSES BOYS' BASKETBALL GAME

Si Melby Hall, on the campus of Augsburg College, was abuzz Friday night as the top boys basketball players from Minnesota went up against each other. Northstar Hoops Report put on the “Clash Of The Classes” event for fans. In all, 44 of the top basketball players from across the state were broken up into recruiting classes. The first game was the class of 2016 taking on the class of 2017. In the second game 2014 took on 2015.

2016 TOOK ON 2017 IN THE FIRST GAME OF THE EVENING

The first game of the evening was the class of 2016 versus 2017. It took awhile for both teams to get into an offensive rhythm.

Both teams looked to run and get baskets on the fast break. Neither team went on a run early in the game.

The 2016 squad switched between man-to-man and zone defense they wanted to get 2017 off guard. They were not able to do that. Team 2016 did a good job of talking on both ends of the floor and letting everyone know what defense they were playing.

The score was close throughout the first half. There were many ties and lead changes throughout the half.

Bryce Irsfeld for 2017 did a good job of yelling out picks. He knew where his teammates were supposed to be on the floor and he instructed his players on where they were supposed to be on the floor.

Team 2017 went on a run midway through the first half. They were able to slow down the 2016 offense.

Brock Bertram for 2016 called for the ball around the low block and was able to make consistent lay-ups near the basket. He did a good job of calling for the ball on offense and his teammates got him the ball where he was able to get good looks at the basket.

Both squads were evenly matched. Neither team went on a run in the first half and neither team gave up any easy baskets.

Amar Miller from the 2016 class came up with some nice baskets that kept his team in the game. He had a quick first step to the basket and a good crossover and he used that to blow by his defenders and get to the basket. If he didn't think that he had a good shot he was not afraid to pass it to one of his teammates.

Team 2016 went on a run late in first half. They built a 10-point lead with 4:14 left in the first half.

Team 2017 continued to get the ball down the floor and as they looked to get easy baskets in transition.

The score at halftime was 40-29 with 2016 leading.

In the first half the class of 2017 shot 27.0% from the field while the class of 2016 shot 48.6%.

As the second half got underway the class of 2017 looked to pass the ball around the three-point line to take time off the 35 second shot clock and to get into an offensive rhythm.

The defensive pressure seemed to loosen up a little bit as each team was able to score on wide open lay ups. Neither team wanted to foul the other if they had a good wide open lay-up.

 

When 2017 looked to go on a run 2016 was able to counter that with slowing them down but extending the defense and switching up what defensive fronts they played.

Miller was able to get fouled and get to the free throw line and was able to step up and knock down his free throws.

The game was close throughout the second half. Both teams were very competitive throughout the contest.

The Class of 2017 strung some baskets together with just under 8:00 to go as they led 67-59 with 7:00 left in regulation.

2016 didn't quit shooting how ever, they continued to swing the ball around the three-point line and looked to create an open shot.

2016 went into a full court press late in the contest. They wanted to make it hard on the 2017 guards to get the ball down the floor. 2016 was successful at doing that.

The game came down to the wire. 2017 had a 69-67 lead with 4:18 left in regulation.

2016 made some nice baskets late down the stretch. They were able to get within two points with 1:17 left in regulation.

Patrick Dembley for class of 2016 knocked down a deep three-point shot with 10 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 76.

The game was tied at 76 at the end of regulation.

In the overtime period both teams continued their same tactics as they continued to push the ball down the floor and get baskets in transition.

The game came down to the wire as both teams played really loose and were able to play to each other’s styles.

The score went back and forth throughout the overtime period. In a fun game that was fun to watch and had a lot of good action the class of 2017 came away with the 84-82 overtime victory over the class of 2016.

 

The leading scorers for the class of 2017 were Joevon Walker and Theo John each with 11 points, and Irsfeld with 10 points. As a team class of 2017 shot 32-89 from the field. That included going 7-25 from behind the three-point line. They were 13-22 from the free throw line. They brought down a total of 53 rebounds including 32 of them on the defensive end.

The leading scorers for the class of 2016 were Brock Bertram with 18 points, and Miller and Amir Coffee each with 11 points. As a team the class of 2016 was 29-79 from the field that included going 5-29 from behind the three-point line. They were 19-25 from the free throw line. They brought down a total of 62 rebounds 41 on the defensive end.

2015 TOOK ON THE CLASS OF 2014 IN THE SECOND GAME OF THE NORTHSTAR HOOP REPORT “CLASH OF THE CLASSES” BASKETBALL GAME

In the second game of the Northstar Hoops Report “Clash of the Classes” basketball game the classes of 2015 and 2014 went up against each other.

It took a while to get used to playing with each other. I thought that both teams came out a little tight at first but within the first five minutes of the game I thought everyone settled down.

Team 2015 called a timeout with 16:58 left in the first half. The score was 12-5, with 2014 leading.

The top three prospects for the class of 2014, Tyus Jones, Rashad Vaughn and Reid Travis all wanted to show their skills and play off of their teammates.

Jones and Vaughn hooked up with some nice alley-oops on wide open looks at the basket early in the contest.

Team 2015 had a hard time scoring baskets for a period of time in the first half. They looked to be a little bit overmatched by the class of 2014.

Team 2014 went to a zone defense as they tried to slow down the scoring of the players from 2015.

Donnell Gresham for the class of 2015 had a nice dribble game. He was able to beat his defender off the dribble and get the basket. He knew where his teammates were on the floor and was able to get them involved in the offense.

 

Jones was able to get open shots that he wanted to take and was not afraid to pull up and get other people to get shots if he thought that they were more open.

Ian Theisen of 2014 was around the basket. He called for the ball and when he got the ball in the low post he had a good drop step and he was able to take the ball strong to the basket.

Vaughn came up with some nasty two-handed slam dunks in the first half that brought the crowd to their feet in applause.

Both teams looked for fast break opportunities and got them in the first half.

At halftime in a very fast pace good game the score at half time was class of 60-43, with team 2014 leading.

As the second half got underway 2014 continued to roll through the class of 2015. Team 2015 didn't back down however. They continued to look to get to the basket and get into an offensive rhythm.

Team 2015 didn't back down. Even though they were not able to get their shots to fall they still had fun and didn't give up.

Class of 2015 tried to come back late in the contest but was not able to take the lead. The class of 2015 got with in 10 points with five minutes to play in regulation.

Team 2014 didn't let 2015 get the lead late in the game. Team 2014 came away with the 109-100 victory over the class of 2015.

I thought that the play of Jones, Travis and Vaughn was really good. Vaughn came up with some nice plays and had some really nice dunks. I thought that they all felt comfortable playing with each other on the floor. All three complemented each other on the floor.

The leading scorers for the class of 2015 were Sacar Anim with 25 points, and Donell Gresham and Marshawn Wilson each with 13 points. Team 2015 shot 37-100 from the field that included going 9-41 from behind the three-point line. They shot 17-23 from free throw line. The class of 2015 came away with 56 total rebounds, 32 of them on the defensive end.

The leading scorers for 2014 were Travis with 26 points, Vaughn 19 points, John Sobaski 11 points and Tyus Jones with 9 points. 2014 shot 43-88 from the field that included going 7-32 from the three-point line. They shot 16-22 from the free throw line. The class of 2014 came away with 56 rebounds 41 of them on the defensive end.

I thought that this was a very good event. I thought that all of the players had fun playing against each other and I also thought that the fans also enjoyed themselves as well.

 

RASHAD VAUGHN HAS MEETINGS SET UP WITH COLLEGE BASKETBALL COACHES

According to Evan Daniles of FOX Sports,  Robbinsdale Cooper basketball player Rashad Vaughn is meeting with University of Minnesota head coach Richard Pitino and Brent “Buzz” Williams of Marquette University. 

Vaughn is one of the top 2014 boys' basketball recruits along with Apple Valley's Tyus Jones and Minneapolis DeLaSalle's Reid Travis.

"The University of Minnesota introduced Richard Pitino as the new head coach of the Gophers basketball program Friday morning. 

The hiring of Pitino was confirmed Wednesday, but Friday's press conference was the first chance for fans and the media to hear from the 30-year-old coach.

Pitino wouldn't talk about his chances of keeping blue chip recruits Tyus Jones, Rashad Vaughn and Reid Travis in Minnesota, but he did have one promise for Gopher fans.

"Our style of play is going to be fun for you to watch," Pitino said. "It will be a lot of press -- we're going to press on every possession, we're going to try to create offense from our defense. It's going to be a great brand of basketball."

Pitino met with the current Gophers team for about 15 minutes Friday morning to share his vision. He said the players seemed excited and invested in the future of the program.

DREAM JOB

Pitino said he and his wife see Minnesota as a destination job, not a stepping stone. The coach said they talked Tuesday night about how excited they were to set their roots in Minneapolis.

"The fact that I'm sitting here is a dream come true and it's something I'm really going to relish," Pitino said. 

"When this job opened I was hoping something would present itself because this is one of the greatest jobs in basketball."

Pitino has not yet begun to assemble a coaching staff.

NORWOOD TEAGUE'S FIRST HIRE

Many Minnesota fans expected athletics director Norwood Teague to make a big splash in hiring a new basketball coach, following his success with Anthony Grant and Shaka Smart at Virginia Commonwealth.

Names like Smart, Butler's Brad Stevens and former Minnesota Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders were mainstays on the rumor mill. But Teague said the search unfolded as expected, and the only surprises were some of the media reports he saw.

"I made a lot of offers to a lot of candidates I didn't know I met with," Teague said. "We were very pleased with our search. It unfolded just like we planned."

Teague said, from the beginning, the search for a new coach would focus on three things:
- Relentless recruiting
- Developing student-athletes, on and off the court
- Managing and building the Gophers program to the highest level

"Coach Pitino fits all of those," Teague said. "He is the perfect fit for the University of Minnesota."

COACH PITINO'S YEAR AT FIU

Pitino has only one season of head coaching experience, but it was a winning season at Florida International. 

The Golden Panthers finished the 2012-13 season with an 18-14 record – the school's first winning season in 13 years.

Vaughn: 'Never satisfied'

In between shooting simulated jumpers with the Knicks' Carmelo Anthony in NBA2K13, Rashad Vaughn imagined what it would be like to have his name on an NBA roster.

The 16-year old Cooper junior, wearing a school sweatshirt with "Mr. Showtime'' plastered on the back, still has several years until that is even a possibility. But his big imagination motivates him.

"I ain't never satisfied," Vaughn said after defeating his younger brother in the video game. "If I can't be No. 1 [in recruit ratings], I have to be No. 1 in the draft."

The flashy nickname doesn't seem to match Vaughn's personality off the court, where he's soft-spoken and gentle. With a basketball in his hands, it's a much different story. Before he developed his highly sought-after jump shot, Vaughn was known for his two-handed dunks and even a 360. These highlights earned him the nickname that used to identify him on Twitter. He also has been known to oblige random requests for dunks from the star-struck student body.

"There are a lot of people in his ear," Cooper coach Steve Burton said. "But he's handled it well. It makes a difference when you're relaxed and happy."

For about 26 minutes on Jan. 5 at Target Center, he managed to steal the spotlight normally directed at top-touted recruit Tyus Jones in a game against Apple Valley.

The 6-6, 201-pound shooting guard made nearly everything he threw up that day, scoring 35 points. Jones was just as impressed with Vaughn as the big-time college coaches in the crowd.

"Any time you're in the same state as the No. 1 player in the country, it's tough to get more attention," Vaughn said. "All the hard work is paying off. But I have to keep grinding and move up [in the rankings] and be the best. Every player would like to be No. 1. And I feel like I can get to that."

He calls his mentor, assistant coach Pete Kaffey, at 1 a.m. to find a gym to shoot in. He wakes up Kaffey for church every Sunday. He takes cones to a park on a 30-degree day to get in extra agility work. It's all part of the work ethic and discipline that Vaughn believes will get him to the top. Kaffey is confident Vaughn is already there.

Once ranked at the bottom of the top 60, Vaughn has climbed 50 spots. That rise has helped draw a couple dozen high-profile scholarship offers. Climbing higher will be tough, but Vaughn already can boast about being the top- rated player at his position.

Cooper point guard Billy Kellogg said Vaughn is much more than that.

"He's steady and humble," Kellogg said. "You can argue it. But honestly, I think Rashad [is the best in the country]."

THE ROBBINSDALE COOPER HAWKS TOOK ON THE PARK CENTER PIRATES IN A BOYS' REGION BASKETBALL GAME

It was region basketball where the Robbinsdale Cooper Hawks took on the Park Center Pirates. Park Center came into the game with a record of 18-8. Coopers record was 11-5. This was the first time that either of these teams have faced each other.

Both teams appeared loose as they warmed up, relaxed ready to do battle.

The Hawks won the tip and Park Center started out on defense using a zone match-up. Cooper matched the Pirates with a zone defense of their own. Cooper looked to push the ball down the court. Cooper's Rashad Vaughn brought the ball down the court. Throughout the game the Park Center Pirates sent various defenders to try and slow the Cooper guard down.

Both teams traded baskets early. But neither team was exceptionally hot. It took each team awhile for both teams to feel each other out and find the best matchups.

Cooper took their time on the offensive end. Park Center wanted to get the ball into the hands of guard Quinton Lee Hooker to force the pace. Hookers speed and ball handling ability allowed him to beat his man off the dribble in the open court. Cooper had a hard time defending Hooker for a period of time. Hookers overall game was very good, on both ends of the court.

However, The Cooper Hawks had a road runner of their own by the name of Rashad Deandre Vaughn. Vaughn was quick off the dribbled and looked to get easy lay-ups down the middle of the court as he tried to blow by his defender.

After running up and down the court for the first 9 minutes and 6 seconds Park Center called a timeout with 10:54 left in the first half. The score was Cooper 15 and Park Center 7. As can be seen from the score both teams came out sluggish.

Both of these teams played with a lot of emotion and intensity the whole game. Neither teams head coaches sat during the first half. They were both up coaching their kids and shouting instructions. The players responded well.

Multiple Cooper players were able to pick off some passes on the defensive end and turn them into points on the offensive end. Park Center did get some deflections but they were not able to come up with the ball.

Leroy Taylor for Cooper did a good job of running the offense. He would switch up between the point and off guard spot.

Park Canter stayed in a zone defense for most of the first half. They were able to show some

man-to-man in transition but mostly stayed in the zone.

Vaughn was able to get the ball inside the paint and he went up strong with the ball. He was not afraid to get fouled going strong to the basket and came up with some nice plays in the first half.

After playing another 5 minutes and 54 seconds in the first half Cooper scored another 14 points while Park Center only managed to score 11 points. Cooper called a timeout with 5:00 left in the first half. The score was Cooper 29 and Park Center 18.

Both teams did a good job of going after loose balls and rebounds. There were many jump balls and tie ups in the first half. Players were physical as they dove on the court after loose balls.

The Park Center defense flustered them a little bit down the stretch. Park Center's Treton Daniels shot the ball well in the first half. He was looking for his shot early and often.

A large amount of students from each school showed up to show support for their schools. They cheered and chanted for their teams and there was some good chants that went back and forth between each schools. This is what really makes March Madness exciting for MN High School Basketball. No doubt each game helps build found memories for the students as well as the players.

The score at halftime was Cooper 39 and Park Center 30.

After the first 4 minutes and 41 seconds into the second half, Cooper added 9 more points to their score while Park Center manage only 6. Head Coach Dave Johnson didn't like what he saw on the floor so he called a timeout with 15:19 left in relegation. The score was Cooper 48 and Park Center 36.

Park Center picked up their defensive pressure full court after the timeout in an effort to close the gap and not let the game get totally out of reach. However, Cooper was able to handle the pressure with relative ease.

Both of these teams let it all out on the floor. Cooper was a little bit quicker than Park Center to the loose balls and on defense and offense. Despite being out quicked, Park Center didn't give up at all. They fought hard throughout the whole game.

Both teams looked to score fast break points. They were both able to that as they traded baskets with just over 13 minutes left in regulation.

Park Center's Joshua Matthews was all over the floor. He was able to drive hard to the basket and make lay-ups. If the lane was clogged by defenders he would step up and shoot a mid-range jump shot. Park Center was closing the gap as a result of their hustle.

Cooper called a timeout with 10:27 left in regulation. The score Cooper 55 and Park Center 51.

Hooker was not himself in the game. I got late word that he had been sick the week leading up to the game and was only in school the required hours to be eligible to play in the game. I thought that he played well despite being sick.

Park Center called a timeout with 5:51 left in regulation. The score was Cooper 62 and Park Center 55.

Park Center did all they could to try to catch up to Cooper. They kept their composer throughout the game. The guards from each team didn't seem to get flustered by the environment.

Park Center fought back after the timeout. They were able to get within two points with 4:45 left in regulation. Hooker caught a cramp on a lay-up but he still stayed in the game.

Park Center did a good job of getting the ball out of the net on the defensive end in an effort to get some quick points.

The game came down to the wire. Leroy Taylor came up with some key baskets for Cooper late in the game. He was able to get to the baskets and create his own shot. Park Center fouled Taylor down the stretch but he was able to hit his free throws.

In a game that went back and forth throughout Cooper came away with the 79-69 victory Park Center.

The leading scorers for Park Center were Quinton Lee Hooker with 18 points, Treyton Daniles with 21 points, and Joshua Mattthews with 16 points.

The leading scorers for Cooper were Rashad Vaughn with 24 points, and Curtis Shelby with 14 points.

ROBBINSDALE COOPER WENT UP AGAINST MINNNEAPOLIS SOUTH IN A BOYS' BASKETBALL GAME

The Robbinsdale Cooper Hawks went up against Minneapolis South in a boys' basketball game. South came into the game with a record of 4-10. Cooper came into the game with a record of 5-9.

South started out in a zone defense. They didn't want Cooper to take easy shots. South got the ball into the hands of Thomas Edison Ford. Ford was all over the court. On the defensive he was able to slow down the guy he was guarding.

Cooper went to a full court press early in the contest. The pressure didn't seem to bother South. South's guards were able to bring the ball down the court under duress.

Rashad Deandre Vaughn came up with some nice blocks. He can get over people. On the offensive end he could pull up and knock down some deep three-point shots.

Cooper jumped out to an early 21-12 lead with 10:00 minutes left in the first half.

South didn't get frustrated that their shots were not falling. They kept on driving to the baskets and taking shots that they thought that they could make.

Carnell Sheppard was able to hit his shots. His teammates got him the ball where they thought that he could hit shots.

Cooper went on a run late in the first half. The South players didn't get down on themselves. They kept on going after loose balls and rebounds.

At halftime the score was Cooper 42 and South 25.

Carnell Sheppard was all over the court for South.

Michigan State was in the building watching Rashad Deandre Vaughn from Cooper.

South continued to struggle in shooting the ball from the floor in the second half. They played hard throughout the game.

Isaiah Wilson for South guarded his man well. He made it hard for him to shoot over him.

South didn't back down. They fought hard the whole game. Ford was able to drop a few baskets late in the contest to keep South alive.

Cooper came away with the 77-65 victory over South. I thought that both teams played hard and competed the whole game. Vaughn played well and didn't give up.

The leading scorers for South were Thomas Edison Ford with 28 and Carnell Sheppard with 19 points.

The leading scorers for Cooper were Rashad Deandre Vaughn with 34 points, LeRoy Taylor with 12 points, and Billy Kellogg and Eric Brown with 10 points each.

CHAMPLIN PARK TOOK ON COOPER IN A BOYS' BASKETBALL GAME

Champlin Park went up against Robbinsdale Cooper in a boys' basketball contest. Cooper looked to get the ball into the hands of Rashad Deandre Vaughn.

The score went back and forth in the opening minutes of the game. There were several lead changes that took place.

Champlin Park started the game in a zone defense. They wanted to spread Cooper out and force them to make long shots.

Ian Smith got the ball for Champlin Park. He was able to dribble around his defenders and took the ball hard to the basket.

Both teams put on a defensive display as it was difficult to shoot the ball.

The score at halftime was Cooper 25 and Champlin Park 22.

Champlin Park looked to get the ball into the hands of Anthony Hill. Hill was all over the court. He was not afraid to shoot the ball from anywhere on the floor.

Champlin Park went on a run midway though the second half. Cooper didn't give up as they kept on trying to attack the basket.

Champlin Park came away with the 62-52 victory over Cooper.

Champlin Park was led in scoring by Anthony Hill with 20 points and Matt Juneau with 14 points. Cooper was lead in scoring by Rashad Deandre Vaughn with 22 points.

ROBINSDALE COOPER TOOK ON DeLaSALLE IN THE MINNESOTA BREAKDOWN TIP-OFF CLASSIC

Robinsdale Cooper took on Minneapolis DeLaSalle in a boys' basketball game as part of the Minnesota Breakdown Tip-Off Classic. 

It took a while for each of these to get into the offensive flow. Neither team was able to hit their shots that they were putting up.

Cooper looked to get the ball into the hands of Rashad Vaughn.

DeLaSalle called a timeout with 9:51 left in the first half. The score was Robinsdale Cooper 13 and DeLaSalle 6.

Cooper used both a zone and man-to-man defense. They were able to have the pace of the game in their favor.

DeLaSalle caught fire midway though the first half.

At halftime the score was DeLaSalle 33 and Robinsdale Cooper 29.

As the second half got underway Ty Curtis Moore looked to hit open jump shots for DeLaSalle.

Cooper came out slow to start the second half. They were not able to get their shots going. Cooper didn’t get down though. They kept of taking it hard to the basket.

Vaughn continued to shoot well late in the contest.

Eric Brown came up with a nice one handed slam dunk. On the next trip down the court he was fouled hard going to the basket.

The game was close the entire game.

Vaughn nailed a three-point shot with 11.7 seconds left in regulation to get within two points of DeLaSalle.

DeLaSalle was able to hold onto the game and come away with the 64-61 victory over Robinsdale Cooper.

Along with many other college coaches University of Minnesota men's head basketball coach Tubby Smith was on had to watch a major portion of this game.

The leading scorers for Robbinsdale Cooper were Rashad Deandre Vaughn with 30 points, Eric Brown scored 16.

The leading scorers for DeLaSalle were Luke Scott with 13 points, Reid Travis with 12 points and Shawn Fitzgibbons with 11 points.
