MOUND WESTONKA WENT UP AGAINST HOLY ANGELS IN A BOYS’ BASKETBALL GAME

On Thurs, Dec. 5, Mound Westonka and Holy Angels went up against each other in a boys’ basketball game.

Holy Angels started the game with a zone defense, which caused Mound Westonka to swing the ball around the 3-point line.

Holy Angels guard Rhikenzo Lee came up with 3-point baskets early. His teammates were able to get him the ball in spots where he could shoot it.

Mound Westonka pushed the ball down the floor in transition, and George Eberhart also made 3-point shots.

Mound Westonka started the game with a zone defense, which spread out the Holy Angels' offense. Holy Angels spread the ball around and got everyone involved in the offense. They were not afraid to shoot three-point shots.

Holy Angels called a timeout with 13:40 left in the first half. The score was Mound Westonka 8, Holy Angels 6.

Mound Westonka's Jacob Orenge got his teammates in the game by passing the ball and making good cuts.

Both teams dove on the floor after loose balls, as there were multiple jump balls throughout the first half.

Holy Angels Arjun Jain came off the bench and provided an offensive spark. He stepped up and knocked down mid-range jump shots and layups to keep Holy Angels in the game.

There were multiple ties and lead changes throughout the first half. Neither team went on a run early.

Mound Westtonka’s Max Kraay and Cole Drill both game up with shots in the first half. Their teammates knew where to get them the ball as they called for it and made shots from all over the court.

Mound Westonka called a timeout with 6:01 left in the first half. The score was Holy Angels 20, Mound Westonka 19.

Both teams made fast break layups late in the game. As they both raced up and down the floor.

Holy Angels Blake Nixon made 3-point shots late in the first half.

Neither team went on a run in the first half, and the game remained tight throughout.

At halftime, the score was Mound Westonka 42, Holy Angels 34.

As the second half got underway, Mound Westonka started the second half in a zone defense. They made Holy Angels pass the ball around the 3-point line and take a lot of time off the 35-second shot clock.

Mound Westonka slowed down the Holy Angels offense late in the first half and early in the second half.

Holy Angels called a timeout with 13:29 left in regulation. The score was Mound Westonka 49, Holy Angels 39.

Even as the Holy Angels struggled to shoot the ball in the second half, they kept their heads up and attacked the basket.

Holy Angels took a lot of time off the 35-second shot clock by swinging the ball around the 3-point line, getting everyone involved in the offense.
 
Mound Westonka called a timeout with 9:03 left in regulation. The score was Mound Westonka 57, Holy Angels 41.

Nixon kept attacking the basket, coming off screens and making baskets throughout the second half.

Jain attacked the basket and kept on making shots late in the game.

Holy Angels called a timeout with 3:34 left in regulation. The score was Mound Westonka 69, Holy Angels 51.

Both teams played hard throughout the game, and neither team gave up. Mound Westonka had momentum late in the first half and kept it up throughout the second half. In a hard-fought game played by both teams, Mound Westonka came away with the 85-55 victory over Holy Angels.

MOUND WESTONKA WENT UP AGAINST MINNEAPOLIS PATRICK HENRY IN A BOYS’ BASKETBALL GAME

On Feb 3, Mound Westonka and Minneapolis Patrick Henry went up against each other in boys’ basketball game. Mound Westonka came into the game with a record of 11-5 and Henry came in with a record of 13-5. 

Mound Westonka started the game in a zone defense. They made Henry pass the ball around the 3-point line. Henry also started the game off in a zone defense. 

Both teams took a lot of time off the clock by swinging the ball around the 3-point line. 

Henry looked to get the ball into the hands of Glentrell La'Von Carter and Yusuf Abdullah both of whom looked to take and make mid-range jump shots and layups. 

Mound Westonka moved the ball down the floor early as they looked to get everyone involved in the offense. 

Henry was able to set the tempo of the game early. They didn’t let Mound Westonka take uncontested shots. 

Carter looked to get to the basket and come up with mid-range jump shots and layups on the offensive end. If Carter didn’t think that he had an open look at the basket he wasn’t afraid to pass it off to one of his teammates. 

Mound Westonka’s Logan Leonard came up with 3-point shots along with mid-range jump shots. 

Henry called a timeout with 10:48 left in the first half. The score was Henry 12, Mound Westonka 11.

Mound Westonka’s Jameson Sexton came up with steals and mid-range jump shots and layups 

Mound Westonka called a timeout with 9:30 left in the first half. The score was Mound Westonka 13, Henry 12. 

Mound Westonka’s Jayden Heimermann came up with layups on the offensive end. On the defensive end, he was able to slow down the guy he was guarding. He was also able to get his teammates involved in the offense. 

There were multiple ties and lead changes throughout the first half. Neither team went on a significant run in the first half. 

Henry switched between zone and man-to-man defense. They wanted to confuse Mound Westonka on the offensive end. Henry took a lot of time off the clock in the first half by swinging the ball around the 3-point line. As Mound Westonka played zone defense that made Henry swing the ball around the 3-point line taking time off the clock.

Henry looked to make layups in transition. 

Mound Westonka’s Logan Leonard came up with deep 3-point shots in the first half to keep Mound Westonka in the game. 

Henry’s Mark Campbell came up with mid-range jump shots and layups on the offensive end. He was able to get past the Mound Westonka defense and come off screens and get to the basket.

The score continued to go back and forth late in the first half. Neither team went on a significant run. 

Henry’s Quamar Gresham came up with layups and got assists from Carter. Carter knew where his teammates were always on the floor.

 Mound Westonka’s Jason Spaeth came up with layups late in the first half. His teammates got him the ball in spots where he could shoot it.

At halftime, the score was Mound Westonka 28, Henry 22. 

As the second half got underway Mound Westonka continued to look for their shots. They looked to get the ball into the hands of Jason Speath and Leonard. Both of whom came up with mid-range jump shots and layups.

It took awhile for Henry to get back into a shooting rhythm in the second half. 

Carter continued to come up with mid-range jump shots and layups. Campbell also continued to come up with mid-range jumps shots and layups. 

Mound Westonka called a timeout with 13:15 left in regulation. The score was Mound Westonka 35, Henry 31. 

Mound Westonka continued to stay in their zone defense. They continued to force Henry to take mid-range jump shots and layups. 

Henry continued to move the ball well down the floor. Carter came up with mid-range jump shots and layups midway through the second half. He kept his team in the game.

Carter wasn’t afraid to take the ball strong to the basket. He came up with layups. Teammate Quamar Gresham also came up with mid-range jump shots and layups to keep his team going.

Mound Westonka called a timeout with 7:33 left in regulation. The score was Mound Westonka 43, Henry 40.

Mound Westonka’s Jason Spaeth came up with shots to keep his team in the game.  

Henry called a timeout with 6:41 left in regulation. The score was Mound Westonka 45, Henry 40.

Henry continued to push the ball down the floor and looked to score layups in transition. 

Mound Westonka continued to pressure Henry and frustrate them on the defensive end. Henry had a difficult time making shots down the stretch against the Mound Westonka zone defense.

Mound Westonka’s Logan Leonard knocked down deep 3-point shots late in the game. 

Henry couldn’t come up with shots that they needed to make down the stretch. They played hard throughout the game. In a hard-fought game Mound Westonka came away with the 61-54 victory over Henry. 

The leading scorers for Mound Westonka were Jason Spaeth with 18 points and Logan Leonard with 15 points.

The leading scorers for Henry were Mark Campbell with 13 points, Quamar Gresham with 11 points, Jamar Gardner with 10 points and Carter with 9 points.

HOLY ANGELS WENT UP AGAINST Mound-Westonka IN A BOYS’ BASKETBALL GAME

It was opening night of the 2013-’14 Minnesota boys’ basketball season on Nov. 21. My first game was at Mound-Westonka, where they played host to Academy of Holy Angels in a nonconference game.
 
Both teams came out looking to push the ball down the floor. On the defensive end, Holy Angels was very talkative as they called out picks. They started out in man-to-man defense.
 
Mound-Westonka knocked down some big shots early. Ryan Rahn for Mound-Westonka came up with some deep three-point baskets. Rahn was not afraid to shoot the ball from anywhere on the floor.
 
Holy Angels swung the ball around the three-point line as they looked to spread the Mound-Westonka defense out.
 
Charlie Koontz for Holy Angels was able to knock down some big shots throughout the first half. His teammates did a good job of getting the ball to him in spots where he could hit his shot.
 
Joseph Poehling was camped out on the low block for Holy Angels. He could call for the ball on the offensive end and was able to get it and look for layups. On the defensive end Poehling came down with some big rebounds.
 
It was a very physical game. Both teams dove on the floor after loose balls and went hard after rebounds on both ends of the floor. Neither team gave up any easy baskets.
 
Taylor BonGiovanni for Holy Angels did a good job of getting his team set up in an offense pattern that he wanted run. On the offensive end he did a good job of swinging the ball around the three-point line and taking time off of the clock.
 
BonGiovanni was also able to step up and knock down some deep three-point shots.
 
Holy Angels wanted to get the ball out of the defensive basket and get the ball down to their own basket as quick as they could. They were able to make some fast break baskets.
 
Reid Dahl for Mound-Westonka was able to slow down the guy he was defending. He guarded different players throughout the half.
 
Holy Angels called a timeout with 4:41 left in the first half. The score was Holy Angels 28, Mound-Westonka 22.
 
The defensive pressure both teams applied made it difficult for each team to get open looks at the basket. Nearly every shot was a contested shot.
 
At halftime the score was Holy Angels 43, Mound-Westonka 31.
 
Holy Angels kept on pushing the ball court and were able to make layups. Mound-Westonka didn’t back down from the pressure that was up on them. They kept on battling and looking to hit shots that they thought that they could make.
 
Mound-Westonka called a timeout with 13:16 left in regulation. The score was Holy Angels 55, Mound-Westonka 47.
 
Both teams dove on the floor for loose balls. There were many tie ups in the second half that resulted in jump balls.
 
Holy Angels called a timeout with 9:13 left in regulation. The score was Holy Angels 59, Mound-Westonka 52.
 
Holy Angels went quiet on the offensive end for a period of time.
 
Holy Angels called a timeout with 6:59 left in regulation. The score was Holy Angels 59, Mound-Westonka 54.
 
Holy Angels turned the ball over at key times in the second half. Mound-Westonka was able to capitalize on the turnovers and create baskets.
 
Mound-Westonka clawed back and got within two points at 63-61 with 2:30 left in the game.
 
Koontz continued to attack the glass and came up with some big shots in the last 2:30.
 
The game came down to the wire. Neither team gave up an easy shot.
 
In the end Holy Angels came away with the 69-63 victory over Mound-Westonka.
 
The leading scores for Mound-Westonka were Ryan Rahn with 24 points, Tynan O’Hara with 23 and Gabe Wear with 11.
 
The leading scorers for Holy Angels were Charlie Koontz with 27 points and Taylor BonGiovanni with 19 points.
