MINNEAPOLIS WASHBURN WENT UP MINNEAPOLIS NORTH IN A BOYS’ BASKETBALL GAME

On Feb. 2, Minneapolis Washburn went up against Minneapolis North in a boys’ basketball game. 

Washburn started the game in a zone defense. North took a lot of time off the clock by swinging the ball around the 3-point line.

Washburn scored layups in transition. When they got the rebounds on the defensive end they were not afraid to push the ball down the floor in transition. 

Washburn called a timeout with 7:16 left in the first half. The score was North 15, Washburn 13. 

North attacked the basket against the Washburn zone. Even though it was a zone defense North had a difficult time shooting the ball against the zone.

Washburn’s Cortez Adams was all over the floor. On the offensive end, he got to the basket and made mid-range jump shots and layups.

North’s Isaac Johnson stepped up and knocked down deep 3-point shots. His teammates got him the ball where he was confident in shooting it.

North’s Odell Wilson IV came up with layups and mid-range jump shots. 

North came up with 3-point shots late in the first half. Washburn struggled shooting the ball late.

At halftime, the score was North 36, Washburn 21.

As the second half got underway North kept attacking the basket and making shots. 

Washburn called a timeout with 16:04 left in regulation. The score was North 41, Washburn 21.

Johnson and JaQuan Sanders-Smith both came up with mid-range jump shots and layups in the second half. The defense had a difficult time slowing him down.

North swung the ball around the 3-point line as they took time off the clock midway through the second half. 

Washburn struggled to shoot the ball throughout the game. Even though they struggled they kept shooting. 

North came away with the 70-48 victory over Washburn. 

The leading scorer for Washburn was Terrell Adams with 18 points. 

The leading scorers for North were Isaac Johnson with 29 points, and Wilson with 12 points.

APPLE VALLEY AND WASHBURN WENT UP AGAINST EACH OTHER IN THE SECTION FINAL BOYS’ FOOTBALL GAME

Apple Valley and Washburn squared off in a section final football game at Washburn High School. This was the first time this season these teams faced off.

 

Apple Valley kicked off to start the game. Washburn got the ball on their own 19 yard line.  Washburn’s quarterback Morley Mathewson looked to get the ball in the air on Washburn’s first offensive series.  He was picked off by A.J. Hill, who returned it 19 yards for a touchdown.

 

The extra point attempt was good.

 

With 11:31 left in the first quarter the score was Apple Valley 7, Washburn 0.

 

Washburn got the ball on their own 20 yard line after the touchback. Washburn got the ball into the hands of their running back Jeff Jones. Jones was able to pick up big chunks of yards as Washburn moved the ball down the field. Jones picked up six yards for a first down. Mathewson was all over the field. He knew where his teammates were on the field and was able to get them in spots where they thought that they could make big plays. Washburn punted the ball on fourth down and long.

 

Apple Valley took over on their own 28 yard line.  Apple Valley’s Da'Shawn Lewis came up with some big plays as he was quick with the ball and was able to pick up some big runs. Apple Valley used both the running and the ground attack in the first quarter. Lewis was able to get past the Washburn defenders. Lewis found the end zone on a three-yard rush. The extra point attempt was good.

 

With 6:05 left in the first quarter the score was Apple Valley 14, Washburn 0.

 

Washburn took over on their own 21 yard line. Washburn looked to get their offense clicking late in the first quarter. They were not able to get anything going on their first few drives.

 

Washburn looked to get the ball into the hands of Jones. The Apple Valley defense was able to get to Jones and impede his progress.

 

Kevin Gleason came up with some nice receptions for Washburn. Gleason was able to get a few first downs to keep the chains moving.

 

On fourth-and-12, Washburn punted the ball but it was blocked and Apple Valley came up with it.

 

After one quarter of play the score was Apple Valley 14, Washburn 0.

 

Apple Valley’s Lewis looked to get into the end zone early in the second quarter. Apple Valley scored again this time coming from a two pass play for a touchdown.

 

The extra point attempt was good. With 9:26 left in the second quarter the score was Apple Valley 21, Washburn 0.

 

Washburn couldn’t get a first down so they punted the ball on fourth-and-long.

 

Apple Valley got the ball on their own 41 yard line. Tommy Singer found Matt Morse for a nice 31-yard reception. Apple Valley looked to score again midway through the second quarter. They did that on a Lewis rushing touchdown. The extra point attempt was good.

 

With 7:22 left in the second quarter the score was Apple Valley 28, Washburn 0.

 

Washburn turned the ball over on downs and Apple Valley got the ball back.  Apple Valley was not able to convert so they punted the ball back to Washburn.

 

Washburn took over on their own 23-yard line. The Apple Valley defense was able to take Jones out of the game for a period of time by putting two guys on him and making it hard for him to make plays.

 

Apple Valley continued to feed Lewis. Lewis was able to get past the Washburn defenders with ease in the first half. Lewis picked up another first down.  

 

At halftime the score was Apple Valley 28, Washburn 0.

 

As the third quarter got underway, Washburn kicked off. The ball went into the end zone. Apple Valley got the ball on their own 20 yard line. Washburn intercepted the ball and Washburn got the ball on the Apple Valley 13-yard line. On fourth-and-14,Washburn went for it and were not able to get a first down.

 

Apple Valley took over on downs. Lewis once again came up big for Apple Valley as he was able to keep the offense moving. Kieran McKeag also got the ball moving on the ground.

 

Apple Valley punted the ball on fourth-and-four and Washburn took over on their own 19 yard line.

 

Jones got the ball into his hands sparingly in the third quarter. On fourth-and-10, Washburn punted the ball.

 

Apple Valley kept on looking for Lewis and he answered the call. Apple Valley looked to score again late in the third quarter.  Jones intercepted a pass to give Washburn the ball back. Washburn took over on their own 10 yard line. Washburn punted the ball on fourth-and-five.

 

After three quarters of play the score was Apple Valley 28, Washburn 0.

 

Lewis kept running and picked up another first down. Apple Valley wanted to get into the end zone on the first drive of the fourth quarter. Apple Valley attempted a 28-yard field goal with 9:50 left in regulation, but it was no good.

 

Washburn did move the ball a little bit in the fourth quarter as they picked up back to back first down passes by Jones. They wanted to put together a successful drive as they wanted to get the ball into the end zone. Washburn punted on fourth down.

 

Apple Valley got the ball back on their own 33 yard line.  

 

Neither team was able to move the ball well the last 5:00 of the game. They each picked up a few first downs but neither team threatened to score late in the contest.

 

In a hard fought game Apple Valley came away with the 28-0 victory over Washburn. With that victory Apple Valley earns a trip to the Minnesota State High School League state football tournament.

HENRY TOOK ON WASHBURN IN A HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME

Henry and Washburn squared off against each other in a football game on Oct. 16. Henry kicked off to start the game.

 

Washburn got the ball on their own 35 yard line. Washburn looked to get the ball down the field as fast as they could. They looked to get the ball into the hands of Jeff Jones, who was all over the field. He was able to get past the Henry defenders. Jones scored a touchdown on a 20 yard rush. The extra point attempt was no good.

 

With 10:21 left in the first quarter the score was Washburn 6, Henry 0.

 

Washburn kicked off after the Jones touchdown.  Henry got the ball after the kickoff on their own 31 yard line.  Henry had a rough time moving the ball down the field. They were not able to get a first down. On fourth-and-five, Henry elected to punt the ball.

 

Washburn got the ball back near midfield but there was a holding call which backed them up to their own 40.

 

Washburn’s quarterback Morley Mathewson was able to find D’Angelo Cooper for a first down. On the new set of downs. Jones picked up a first down. Jones ran the ball eight yards for a touchdown.

 

The extra point attempt was no good.

 

With 4:56 left in the first quarter the score was Washburn 12, Henry 0.

 

Washburn kicked off after the touchdown. Henry got the ball on their own 38 yard line. Henry was able to get the ball into the hands of Jawon Norton ran for a first down. Henry had a hard time moving the ball down the field. The Washburn defense stepped up big and came up with some big plays to slow down the Henry offense.

 

Washburn got the ball back on downs. They once again looked to chew up yards both by land and air. Jones caught a 44-yard pass for a touchdown but that was called back because of a penalty.

 

Washburn was not able to pick up a first down so they turned the ball over on downs near midfield.

 

After one quarter of play the score was Washburn 12, Henry 0.

 

On the first play of the second quarter Henry Tinkler for Henry came up with a reception for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was good.

 

With 11:50 left in the second quarter the score was Washburn 12, Henry 7.

 

On the next drive Jones came up with an 87-yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was good.

 

With 11:35 left in the second quarter the score was Washburn 19, Henry 7.

 

Washburn recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff.

 

Washburn looked to keep the ball on the ground as they kept on looking for Jones to get most of their yards. On fourth-and-eight, Washburn went for it and was not able to get a first down so that resulted in a turnover.

 

Henry looked to keep the ball on the ground as they looked to get a first down. They were not able to do it so they punted the ball.

 

Washburn got the ball back on their own 45 yard line.  Jones was all over the field as he was able to chew up yards in big chunks.

 

Henry got the ball on the Washburn 38 yard line. Henry tried to move the ball down the field once again but they had a tough time getting the ball down the field. They turned it over on downs.

 

Washburn got the ball on their own 38 yard line. Jones came up with a huge catch and was able to get a first down.  

 

At halftime the score was Washburn 19, Henry 7.

 

Washburn kicked off to start the third quarter. Henry got the ball on their own 25 yard line.  Henry looked to get into an offensive rhythm early. On fourth-and-16 to go they elected to punt the ball.

Washburn got the ball on the Henry 36 yard line. Washburn got within the red zone as they kept the ball on the ground. Jones picked up another first down on a 13-yard run. Jones found the end zone on a four-yard run. The extra point attempt was good.

 

With 6:52 left in the third quarter the score was Washburn 26, Henry 7.

 

Washburn kicked off after the touchdown. Henry got the ball on their own 44 yard line.

 

Henry kept the ball on the ground as they looked to get the ball in the hands of Damarius Gilmer.

 

There was a fumble on the play and Washburn recovered the ball near midfield.

 

Jones continued to pick up first downs as he led the offensive charge down the field once again.

Washburn fumbled the ball and Henry’s Anthony Jones recovered the ball for the turnover.
 

Henry’s  Tinkler came up with some nice running plays for his team. Henry was not able to pick up a first down and they turned it over to Washburn.
 

After three quarters of play the score was Washburn 26, Henry 7.
 

Jones scored from 42 yards out but there was a penalty on Washburn. The ball came back to the 47 yard line. Jones found the end zone again, this time for a 41-yard touchdown. There were no penalties on the play. The extra point attempt was good. With 10:59 left in the fourth quarter the score was Washburn 33, Henry 7.
 

Washburn kicked off after the touchdown.  Henry got the ball on their own 32 yard line. Tinkler came up with a huge reception that gave Henry a first down.  Henry found the end zone on a Norton short yard run. The extra point attempt was good.
 

With 8:04 left in regulation was Washburn 33, Henry 14.
 

Henry kicked off after the touchdown. There was no return because the defense was right next to the receiver.
 

Washburn got the ball on their own 35 yard line. Washburn continued to get the ball into the hands of Jones. On fourth-and-two,Washburn picked up a first down on a 5 yard run by Jones. There was a fumble on the play and Henry took over on their own 43 yard line.
 

Henry looked to get the ball back into the hands of Tinkler. Henry looked to get into the end zone late in the contest. Henry found the end zone on a Tinkler 8-yard run. The extra point attempt was good.
 

With 1:28 left in regulation the score was Washburn 33, Henry 21.

Henry kicked off after the touchdown. Washburn was not able to score again and neither was Henry.

In a hard fought clean football game Washburn came away with the 33-21 victory over Henry. I thought that Jones played very well.  He came up with some big plays to keep his team in the contest. Henry didn’t quit and didn’t give up either.

 

GET TO KNOW DWIGHT ERIC GOINS JR

Dwight Eric Goins Jr. was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Goins graduated from Washburn High School in 2008.

He played basketball for Washburn and Dakota Technical College and he is looking to go to either Anoka Ramsey or Dayton State College. He is 6 foot 3 inches tall and he plays the guard spot.

Goins has a big family as he has six brothers and three sisters.

He has played sports his whole life, as he started playing basketball when he was four years of age. Goins is an all around athlete as he has played soccer, basketball and football in his free time but basketball is his main sport of choice.

After college he would like to be a personal trainer or an air traffic controller.

I asked him, “What is your best basketball memory?” his response was, “My 1st dunk on somebody and when I scored 37 points in a game.” I also asked him, “What do you like to do in your free time?” “A lot I’m all over , I be here and there , but family is important to me whatever it is I’m doing as long as their involved I’m cool”.

Goins also likes to listen to a lot of different kinds of music, “The realest man , Yo Gotti , Meek Mill Boosie ,Wayne, Drake, Fab Chief Keef Bang Bang. I mess with a lot of people before a game really.”

This summer he has been working on his basketball game and thanks God every chance he gets to become the best person and basketball player that he can be.

I know Dwight Erich Goins and whatever program he ends up at he will be an advantage to the program. He is a down to earth person and a good person to be around.

I finally asked him, “Is there anything else you want people to know about you?” “I’m in my d rose mode this whole year no matter or where I attend I’m feeling like why not, why can’t I be the best player in that conference , I worked hard over the summer and it’s time for things to pay off MN this my year. Thanks for all the support from family friends and others but most of all I want to give thanks to God for the skills and experiences I’ve been through so far, which have gotten me where I stand today.”

MINNEAPOLIS WASHBURN TO GET NEW SYNTHETIC TURF FIELD

Minneapolis Washburn High School will be getting a new synthetic turf field. That will replace the grass field that is already in place. The Minnesota Vikings and Minneapolis Public Schools teamed up for athletic fields. The Minnesota Vikings presented a check for $20,000 in grant money to get the project started.

According to a press release put out by the Minneapolis Public Schools, “The grant, awarded by the Vikings, the NFL Youth Football Fund and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), will be used to replace the natural field at Washburn High’s MacQuarrie Field with synthetic turf as part of the MPS Team Up for Turf campaign, a commitment to raise $2.2 million to convert the athletic field at Washburn high school to state-of-the-art synthetic turf field”.

I was able to talk to Washburn athletic director Daniel Pratt about the project. I was also talk to football head coach Giovan Jenkins about the project.
