ARE HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS GETTING TOO VIOLENT?

Are Minnesota high school sports getting too violent? That is the question that the press is looking at in the wake of different violent events.

I myself have witnessed some violence at local sporting events. I was at a football game where a fight broke out.

This football season has reached the midway point. But let’s take a look at some violent events that have taken place already this season.

At the beginning of season there were reports of hazing at Elk River High School. On Thursday, September 30, 2010 there was a fight in the stands at the St. Paul Como versus St Paul Central football game. That fight spilled out into a neighborhood gas station. On Sunday October 2, 2010 A few Robbinsdale Armstrong football players were accused of 'inappropriate behavior'. There have also been reports of high school hazing at Champlin Park High School. About 10 students from Champlin Park High School will be disciplined for hazing and harassing behavior during a pre-homecoming toilet-papering spree that the school has been working to curtail.

I don’t like the violence that has taken place at these contests. I have been able to share my views with the local media outlets about what has taken place in the local sporting scene. I have been in the Minneapolis Star Tribune on the fights that occurred at St Paul Central. I have also been on KARE 11, and KSTP Ch 5.

All the negative publicity that the fights and hazing that has happened so far this fall has been really sad.

ST PAUL COMO PARK AND ST PAUL HARDING SQUARE OFF ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD

The St Paul Como Park Cougars faced off against the St Paul Harding at Griffin Stadium in a conference match up. Coming into the game St Paul Como Park had a record of 3-2 and St Paul Harding also had a record of 3-2.

St Paul Como Park got the ball first on the offensive end. Como Park tried short running plays on their first drive. They were able to convert on fourth down and short yardage on their first drive. Como Park was just able to keep pounding the ball down the field in the opening series. Jon Carr did a nice job running the ball in the early goings for Como Park. Como wanted to try to get it in his hands in the early goings. With 6:09 remaining in the first quarter Jon Carr found the end zone with an 18-yard touchdown scamper. The extra point was no good.

With 6:08 remaining in the first quarter the score was Como Park 6 and St Paul Harding 0.

St Paul Harding got the ball back after the touchdown but they were not able to do anything with the ball. John Carr once again came up big on their next series but they were not able to convert and they ended up punting the ball to Harding.

At the end of the first quarter the score was Como Park 6 and St Paul Harding 0.

Como Park got the ball to start the second quarter and Angelo Williams made a nice running play to start off the quarter. Como Park kept the ball on the ground for the most part in the first half. They kept looking to run the ball rather then pass it. They were having success making short running plays. That is what lead them to another touchdown as John Carr found the end zone again for a Como Park touchdown on a short yard run.

Como Park intercepted a pass late in the second quarter and they were not able to find the end zone. At half time the score was Como Park 12 and Harding 0.

As the second half got underway Harding got the ball to begin the third quarter. They were determined to find the end zone. They were not able to get the first down so they turned the ball over to Como Park.

Terrance Williams for Como Park came up with a big running play with about 5:00 left in the third quarter as he was able to find a hole and go in for a first down.

Harding tried to use some trickery in the third quarter as they tried a reverse option. They wanted to just find the end zone for once in this game. They were having difficultly doing that the whole night. They did give it their all and they did give Como Park all that they could handle.

John Carr found the end zone again as he ran for 35 yards for the Como Park Touchdown. John Carr also ran it in for the successful two-point conversion.

With 45 seconds left in the third quarter the score was Como Park 20 and Harding 0. That was the score at the end of the third quarter.

Harding got the ball to start the fourth quarter. They really wanted to get something together in the fourth quarter. They were trying to do all they could. They were just not able to convert on plays that they needed to. That was one of the major factors all evening.

Both teams really went at each other throughout the game. It was a very physical game. Both teams played with intensity. It was also a very crisp cold evening. A few of the players who got banged up had to be attended to by trainers and coaches. They bodies were not able to sustain getting hit and injured in the cold. Both teams were dealing with guys cramping up in the legs. No one got seriously hurt in the game.

I thought both teams played very well. The intensity was there by both teams throughout the whole game. St Paul Como Park was just able to get the ball into the end zone and they didn’t cough if up in critical times in the game. They were able to make plays in critical points in the game especially in third and fourth down situations.

I really thought that John Carr was the player of the game because of his play on the field. He was able to find the end zone and he kept his players into the game.

St Paul Como Park was able to come away with the 20-0 victory.

ST PAUL COMO PARK IS TAKING ON HOPKINS IN THE ANOKA HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT

In the first game of the afternoon it is St. Paul Como Park taking on the Hopkins Royals. As this game gets underway here there are not many fans in the stands here but we are set to play basketball.

Mike Broghammer gets things underway here with a nice pull up jumper to get the game underway. Both of these teams are really getting the ball up the court here in the early goings.

St Paul Como Park is playing a tough man to man defense here in the early goings. They are really getting through touch picks. Here in this game.

Jordan Jackson for Como Park has played well here for come down for a nice slam dunk here mid way through the first half.

Hopkins has to keep working the ball inside to their big man and run their offense here in the first half to be successful here in this game. Raymond Cowles who is going to going Santa Clara next season is also playing well here. He has come down and made some nice shots here.

Como Park is playing aggressive here. They are not backing down to this Hopkins Royals team here. Trent Locket has really had a nice jump shot here in this game. He is not afraid to shoot the ball here in the game.

With 9:18 left to go in the first half the score is Hopkins 26 and St Paul Como Park 8.

Mike Broghammer has been using his baby turnaround jump shot here today. He has already had a couple of points using that shot. Hopkins is looking to get the ball up the court and run. Royce Alexander White and Mike Broghammer seem to be replacing each other on the court here in this game. I think that Ken Novak Jr has confidence in both of those players but he wants to space his players on the court and that has been an exchange that has been working well here today in this game.

This game has been up and down the court here. Both of these teams are pushing the ball up the court here so far. Hopkins has been doing a nice job on their substitution patterns in this game they have really played well in the first half. St Paul Como Park is trying to run some of their different plays here to get to the basket.

At half time the score is Hopkins 59 and St Paul Como Park 23.

As this second half gets started here in Anoka, Hopkins looks to have that fire in them that they want to come out and win this game. But I do know that this Como Park team is not going to back down from any challenge they are not going to back down from Hopkins. In fact Como Park has come out here with a lot of energy.

Hopkins is really getting after it here in the second half. They are playing really hard here in this game. Ken Novak Jr is really stressing closing out to his players.

With 13:00 left to go in the contest the score is Hopkins 75 and St Paul Como Park 34.

Hopkins is still playing aggressive here in this contest they need to play well because they have to use this game as a tool for them down the season.

St Paul Como Park is continuing to go hard to the basket and they are making their shots that they are putting up but it is just not as quickly as this Hopkins team is. This Hopkins team is just so loaded with good athletes. They are several players that have already committed to big division 1 school or they have kids that can compete at that level. I think that once Ken Novak Jr gets them to Hopkins he really is setting these kids up for success.

The clock is in running time because of the big scoring margin in this game. Hopkins has all of their reserves in the game right now as this game has gotten out of hand.

In a game that was not much of a contest the Hopkins Royals have ran away with the game here in the end. The final of the game was Hopkins 91 and St Paul Como Park 56.

For the Hopkins Royals leading the scoring was Trent Lockett who scored 19 points. I also thought that he played well in the game. He was one of their team leaders as far as being vocal on the court. Royce Alexander White added 10 points while Raymond Cowles and Mike Broghammer each got 7 points each.
