OSSEO TOOK ON ROCHESTER LOURDES IN A BOYS BASKETBALL GAME

On Dec. 26, Osseo and Rochester Lourdes went up against each other in a boys basketball game. The game was part of the Rochester Rotary US Bank Holiday Classic that was played at the Mayo Civic Center.
 
The score went back and forth early. Neither team went on a run early in the game. Lourdes called a timeout with 12:04 left in the first half. The score was Osseo 12, Lourdes 10.
 
Lourdes was not afraid to take the ball hard to the basket after they passed the ball around the three-point line to take time off the clock.
 
Lourdes went to a zone defense late in the first half. They wanted to spread the Osseo offense out.
 
Osseo called a timeout with 5:40 left in the first half The score was Osseo 14, Lourdes 13.    
 
Osseo’s Ian Theisen came down and rolled his ankle with 4:37 left in the first half. He was helped off the court. Theisen did not return to the game.
 
The defensive pressure made it difficult for each team to put shots up. Even then someone took a shot someone always had a hand in the face.
 
Osseo’s Jordan Dembley came up with some good shots for his team. He was able to hit some layups late in the first half.
 
At halftime the score was Osseo 21, Lourdes 17.
 
Osseo started the second half in a zone defense, that made Lourdes have to swing the ball around the three-point line to look for their shots.
 
Both teams took a lot of time off the clock in the second half. The game was a defensive battle.
 
Dembley was able to keep making layups in the second half.
 
Lourdes called a timeout with 12:33 left in regulation, the score was Osseo 30, Lourdes 19.
 
Lourdes looked to get the ball into to Jacob Schaefer’s hands. Schaefer called for the ball on the low block and was able to hit short jump shots.
 
Andre Stewart for Lourdes kept his team in the game. He drove to the basket and made layups and was also able to make jump shots from within the three-point line.
 
Osseo got hot late in the second half. Everybody did a good job of passing the ball around as they were able to get their offense going.
 
Lourdes called a timeout with 6:31 left in regulation, the score was Osseo 41, Lourdes 28.
 
Osseo clamped down on the defensive end as Lourdes were not able to get good shot in the second half.
 
Osseo did a good job of passing the ball around the three-point line to take time off the clock late in the contest.
 
In a game that saw a lot of defense and not a whole lot of offense throughout, Osseo came away with the 55-32 victory over Lourdes.

NEW PRAGUE TOOK ON ROCHESTER LOURDES IN A BOYS BASKETBALL GAME

New Prague and Rochester Lourdes went up against each other in a boys basketball game. The game got off to a quick start as each team traded baskets.
 
The defense played by both teams didn’t allow for easy looks at the basket.
 
Both teams ran the floor well. Neither team was able to go on a run.
 
New Prague got everyone involved in the offense. They passed the ball around the three-point line.
 
New Prague was able to sink some baskets late in the first half. They were able to slow down the Rochester Lourdes on the offensive end.
 
At halftime the score was New Prague 38, Rochester Lourdes 27.
 
The second half got underway as New Prague was able to sink some big shots early. They were to slow down Rochester Lourdes.
 
New Prague went to a zone defense as they looked to make it difficult for Rochester Lourdes to make shots.
 
New Prague looked to take time off the clock midway through the second half.
 
Rochester Lourdes was not able to get their offense going throughout the game.
 
New Prague came away with the 77-56 victory over Rochester Lourdes.

NEW LONDON-SPICER TOOK ON ROCHESTER LOURDES IN THE STATE SEMIFINALS OF THE MINNESOTA STATE HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

New London-Spicer took on Rochester Lourdes in the Class 3A state semifinal football game at the Metrodome.
 
Rochester kicked off to New London to start the game. New London was not able to get a first down on the first drive and they turned it over on downs.
 
Rochester got into the endzone on a Kane Carstens four-yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was good.
 
With 5:00 left in the first quarter the score was Rochester 7, New London-Spicer 0.
 
New London-Spicer was not able to get a first down so they had to punt on fourth down and Rochester took over.
 
Rochester’s Brandt completed a 56-yard pass to James Ustby for a first down.
 
After one quarter of play the score was Rochester 7, New London-Spicer 0.
 
Rochester wanted to get into the endzone at the start of the second quarter. The New London-Spicer  defense stepped up big and was able to turn Rochester over.
 
New London Spicer Adam Essler ran 92 yards for a touchdown. Ryan Vraa’s pass to Brett Olson was good for the two-point conversion.
 
With 10:27 left in the second quarter the score was New London-Spicer 8, Rochester 7.
Rochester got the ball back after the touchdown. They were not able to get a first down so they had to punt it back to New London-Spicer.
 
New London-Spicer’s Vraa made a good pass for 24 yards to Shane Zylstra. Vraa hooked up again to Zylstra for a 10-yard touchdown reception. Two point conversion was no good.
 
The score with 6:54 left in the second quarter the score was New London-Spicer 14, Rochester 7.
 
Rochester fumbled the ball and New London-Spicer recovered.
 
New London-Spicer was able to move the ball down the field. Chris Nelson picked up a 13-yard pass. Jarrett Hatlestad ran 27 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion pass was no good.
 
Rochester got the ball back and McKay Carstens rushed for 32 yards and a first down. They got into the endzone on a Carstens rushed for five yards for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was no good.
 
That made the score New London-Spicer 20, Rochester 13 that was the score at halftime.
 
New London-Spicer kicked off to start the third quarter.  Rochester got the ball on their own 29 yard line. Rochester looked to air it out on their first drive of the quarter. On fourth-and-seven they punted the ball.
 
New London-Spicer found the endzone on a 20-yard run for Ben Beuning. The two-point conversion by attempt was good by Adam Essler run.
 
With 9:36 left in the third quarter the score was New London-Spicer 28, Rochester Lourdes 13.
 
Rochester got the ball back after the touchdown. Brandt completed a pass to Carstens for 27 yards and a first down. The New London-Spicer defense stepped up big and was able to stop the offense. On fourth-and-seven, Rochester Lourdes Brandt nailed a 25-yard field goal attempt.
 
The score with 5:10 left in the third quarter was New London-Spicer 28, Rochester Lourdes 16.
 
New London kept the ball on the ground and Shane Zelstra was came up with some nice runs for his team to pick up a first down late in the third quarter. Essler came up with a four-yard run for a touchdown.
 
Vraa ran in for the two point conversion.
 
With 1:18 left in the third quarter the score was New London-Spicer 36, Rochester Lourdes 16.
 
Brandt was picked off by Essler to give New London-Spicer the ball back.
 
The score after three quarters was New London-Spicer 36, Rochester Lourdes 16.
 
New London-Spicer’s Hatlestad ran for 22 yards to pick up a first down. The Rochester Lourdes defense stepped up and turned New London-Spicer over on downs.
 
Rochester Lourdes got the back and they looked to air the ball out. Brandt looked to get the ball into the hands of the receivers. He was not able to get them the ball as they turned it over on downs.
 
New London-Spicer came away with the 36-16 victory over Rochester Lourdes. After the game I was able to speak with head coach Dan Essler about the contest. I also was able to talk to Ryan Vraa about the game.

ROCHERSER LOURDES TOOK PERHAM IN THE CLASS AA MINNESOTA STATE HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE CLASS AA BOYS' BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Rochester Lourdes took on Perham in the state championship game of class AA boys' basketball.
 
Perham came out in a match up zone defense.
 
At the first media timeout the score was Rochester Lourdes 2 and Perham 0.
 
Perham's defense caused Rochester Lourdes problems.
 
The score went back and forth throughout the first half.
 
With 6:56 to go in the first half the score was Perham 11 and Rochester Lourdes 9.
 
Perham strung together some baskets late in the half.
 
At halftime the score was Perham 18 and Rochester Lourdes 13.
 
As the second half got underway Jordan Bruhn looked to get the ball into his hands. He got his
teammates involved in the offense.
 
Rochester Lourdes got the ball out of the rim and was able to attack the basket.
 
The score went back and forth throughout second half.
 
With 10:13 left in regulation the score was Perham 22 and Rochester Lourdes 23.
 
The game came down to the wire. It was a very defensive game. Neither team went on a run.
 
Nick Tobkin stepped out and was able to knock down a deep three-point shot to give Perham energy.
 
With 6:17 left in regulation the score was Perham 31 and Rochester Lourdes 25.
 
Rochester Lourdes was not able to make a shot for a period in the second half.
 
Perham went on a run with just under 4:00 to go. They closed out the game on a run and came away
with the 45-37 victory over Rochester Lourdes.
 
After the game I was able to talk to Perham's Jordan Bruhn, Jordan Cresap, Sam Stratton, and Nick
Tobkin about winning the Class AA championship victory. I was also able to head Dave Cresap about
the victory.

ROCHESTER LOURDES TOOK ON REDWOOD VALLEY IN THE CLASS AA SEMIFINALS OF THE MSHSL STATE SEMIFINALS IN BOYS' BASKETBALL

Rochester Lourdes took on Redwood Valley at the Target Center. The score started out going back and
forth as each team was able to hit shots.
 
Rochester took a timeout with 12:12 the score was Redwood Valley 8 and Rochester Lourdes 5.
 
Both teams shot the ball well at the start of the game. Neither team was able to go on a run to start the
game.
 
Redwood Valley's Jesse Leith stepped up his efforts on the defensive end.
 
Both teams played tight defense.
 
In a defensive battled first half the score at halftime was tied at 19.
 
The game continued to go back and forth in the second half.
 
The game was close. Neither team went on a run. Both teams passed the ball around getting everyone
involved in the offense.
 
At the end of regulation the score was tied at 37.

At the end of the first overtime the score was knotted up at 39 so the game went into another overtime.
 
At the end of the second overtime the score was tied at 41.
 
After a missed jumper by Axex Kapraun for Rochester Lourdes there was a scramble on the floor that
resulted in a tie-up as time expired.
 
After the third overtime the score was still tied at 41.
 
Redwood Valley was in a zone defense and they looked to trap the ball as soon as it crossed half court.
 
Redwood Valley's JT Radel was fouled and went to the free throw line where he made one out of two
shots.
 
Alex Kapraun from Rochester Lourdes drained a three point shot with 1:21 left in the fourth overtime
to make the score Rochester Lourdes 44 and Redwood Valley 42.
 
Rochester Lourdes came away with the 48-42 victory over Redwood Valley in four overtimes.

THE ROCHESTER LOURDES EAGLES PUT OUT THE FIRE OF HOLY FAMILY AS THEY WON THE CLASS AAA STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

The Eagles of Rochester Lourdes took on the Fire of Holy Family in the class AAA championship game.


Holy Family kicked off to Rochester. Rochester got the ball after the kick off. They were not able to get the first down and had to punt the ball to Holy Family.


Holy Family tried to run and pass on their first drive. They could not get the first down. They had to punt the ball to Rochester. They pinned them deep in their zone.


Rochester looked to air it out. Rochester did a good job of getting the ball down the field. Holy Family’s defense stepped up big. Rochester was not able to get a first down. They had to punt the ball to Holy Family.


Rochester’s Nic Jensen scored a touchdown on a 44-yard touchdown run with 1:07 left to go in the first quarter. The extra point was good.


With 1:07 left to go in the first quarter the score was Rochester Lourdes 7 and Holy Family 0.


As the second quarter got underway Holy Family had to punt the ball back to Rochester because they could not get a first down. Adam Lentz ran 78 yards for a Rochester touchdown. The extra point attempt was good.


With 8:36 left to go in the second quarter the score was Rochester Lourdes 14 and Holy Family 0.


Rochester Lourdes kicked off to Holy Family after the touchdown. Holy Family was not able to get a first down. They turned the ball over to Rochester Lourdes.


Rochester Lourdes’ Adam Lentz ran 27 yards for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was good. With 2:29 left to go in the second quarter the score was Rochester Lourdes 21 and Holy Family 0.


With 44 seconds left to go in the second quarter Peter Vakulskas ran 23 yards for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was good.


At halftime the score was Rochester Lourdes 21 and Holy Family 7.


Holy Family continued to run the ball in the third quarter. They could not get a first down. They had to punt the ball back to Rochester.


Rochester Lourdes threatened to score midway through the third quarter. Nick Jensen found Alex Kapraun in the end zone for a 17 yard touchdown.


With 7:45 left to go in the third quarter the score was Rochester Lourdes 28 and Holy Family 7.


Rochester Lourdes kicked off to Holy Family after the touchdown. Holy Family was not able to get a first down. They had to punt the ball back to Rochester Lourdes.


At the end of the third quarter the score was Rochester Lourdes 28 and Holy Family 7.


Holy Family got the ball and was intercepted by Sam Slightam. That gave Rochester Lourdes the ball back. Nic Jensen made a 40-yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was good.


With 10:22 left to go in the fourth quarter the score was Rochester Lourdes 35 and Holy Family 7.


Adam Lentz scored a touchdown on a 23 yard run with 7:08 left to go in the fourth quarter. The extra point attempt was no good.


With 1:41 left to go in the fourth quarter Holy Family’s Jeff Soul found the end zone for a touchdown on a 1 yard run.


The Rochester Lourdes was able to come away with the 41-13 victory over Holy Family.


After the game I was able to talk to Rochester Lourdes Adam Lentz, and Nic Jensen. I was also able to talk to Head Coach Mike Kesler about the victory.


With that 41-13 victory Rochester Lourdes are the 2010 MSHSL Class AAA state football champions.
