MINNEAPOLIS WASHBURN TOOK ON ST. PAUL HIGHLAND PARK IN A BOYS BASKETBALL GAME

Minneapolis Washburn and St. Paul Highland Park tangled in a boys basketball game on Feb. 10.
 
Both teams looked to control the tempo early in the contest. Highland Park picked up their defense in the half court. They started out in a zone defense. Washburn also started out in a zone.
 
It took a while for each team to get into an offensive shooting rhythm.  
 
Highland Park came up with steals and they were able to come up with baskets. Highland Park guard Emanuel Murphy came up with some nice layups.
 
Washburn had a hard time shooting the ball in the first few minutes of the first half. Kevin Gleason was not afraid to pass his teammates the ball if he thought that they had open shots.
 
Washburn called a timeout with 12:09 left in the first half. The score was Highland Park 19, Washburn 13.
 
Washburn’s Quinton Garvis took the ball to the basket. He was wanting to get layups and was able to get past his defender.  
 
Washburn’s Evan Shepherd caught fire midway through the first half as he was able to consistently knock down his jump shots.
 
Highland Park did a good job of communicating on screens. They also always knew where the ball was on defense.
 
Both teams dove on the floor after loose balls. There were many jump balls in the first half.  
 
Washburn’s Noah Burke took the ball hard to the basket. He called for the ball on the low block and was able to score off of drop step layup.
 
Garvis came up with some big rebounds and was not afraid to power the ball back up. He was able to hit his free throws after he got fouled.
 
Highland Park’s Ben Slattery came off the bench and provided an offensive spark. He called out plays that he wanted to run and was a pest on the defensive end.
 
Washburn looked to trap the ball on defense but Highland Park was too quick for them and were able to avert the trap and get to the basket.
 
At halftime the score was Highland Park 41, Washburn 33.
 
As the second half got underway Highland Park came out with a lot of energy. They were talking on defense and going hard after loose balls.
 
Washburn came out in a zone defense.
 
Washburn called a timeout with 15:45 left in regulation. The score was Highland Park 49, Washburn 33.
 
After a sluggish start in the second half, Washburn seemed to wake up as Shepherd came up with some deep three-point shots.
 
Highland Park’s Isaiah Brower was able to hit some three-point shots to keep his team in the game.
 
Washburn continued to attack the basket and get the ball into the hands of Shepherd. Shepherd continued to shoot well throughout the second half.  
 
Highland Park called a timeout with 8:17 left in regulation. The score was Highland Park 60, Washburn 54.
 
Washburn continued to attack the basket and hit shots. They were able to get within two points at 60-58 with 6:45 left in regulation.
 
Garvis tied the score at 60 on a layup with just under 6:00 left. The score continued to go back and forth throughout the rest of the way. 
 
Washburn’s Jobreil Powell came up with steals and was able to get layups on the offensive end.  
 
There were several ties and lead changes late in the contest. Neither team went on a significant run in the second half.
 
Highland Park called a timeout with 1:55 left in regulation. The score was Washburn 70, Highland Park 68.
 
Burke continued to get to the free throw line and make his shots late in the contest.
 
Brower tied the game at 72 with 20 seconds to go on two free throws.
 
Washburn advanced the ball past half court and called a timeout with 14 seconds left.
 
Washburn’s Shepherd missed a deep three-point shot at the top of the key, at the buzzer but it didn't go in. 
 
The score was tied at 72 after regulation. The game went into a four minute overtime session.
 
Washburn swung the ball around the three-point line looking to take time off the clock. Highland Park went to a zone defense in the overtime period.
 
Highland Park’s Kawshon Collins-Westlund attacked the basket and looked to score on layups.
The score went back and forth in overtime.

Adrian Miller came up with a mid-range jump shot to give his team a two point lead with under 45 seconds to go.
 
Washburn called a timeout with seven seconds left in the overtime period. The score was Highland Park 78, Washburn 76.
 
Washburn got the ball at midcourt after the timeout. Gleason missed a jump-shot at the buzzer.
 
Highland Park came away with the 78-76 overtime victory over Washburn.
 
The leading scorers for Washburn were Shepherd with 32 points, Garvis with 18 points and Powell with 8 points.
 
The leading scorers for Highland Park were Murphy with 19 points, Miller with 15 points and Collins-Westlund with 8 points.
