WASHBURN TOOK ON SOUTHWEST IN A BOYS BASKETBALL GAME

Minneapolis rival schools Washburn and Southwest went up against each other in a boys basketball game on Feb. 13. Both teams were well represented in a big crowd.

Washburn looked to push the tempo at the start. Both teams started in a zone defense.

Southwest’s Allen Edwards brought the ball down the floor and called out plays that he wanted ran. He got the ball into Akeem Smith’s hands. Smith looked to hit his mid-range jump shot. Southwest’s Cam Ross made layups in the first half. Ross also looked to get the ball into the hands of AJ Ray. Ray did a good job of attacking the basket and getting good layups.

Washburn’s Jeff Jones was all over the floor on the offensive end. He was able to make his jump shots. Jones wasn’t afraid to shoot two pointers.

Southwest went to a full-court press. They wanted to fluster Washburn on offense.

Washburn stalled on offense as they swung the ball around the three-point line to take time off the clock.

Washburn’s Jones guarded Smith and those two didn’t give the other an easy shot attempt. They played very good defense against each other.

Edwards was able to get to the basket as he was able to get past the defenders.

At halftime the score was Washburn 32, Southwest 25.

The second half got off to a quick start as each team came up and made shots.

Washburn’s Quinton Garvis got into foul trouble and came out with three fouls with 16:00 left in regulation. Garvis was an offensive threat in the first half.

Washburn’s George Clark came up with layups in the second half to keep his team in the game. Jones came up with a layup with just under 12:30 to go and apparently twisted an ankle. He came out for a minute but reentered the game.

It was a very physical game. Both teams dove on the floor after loose balls.

Southwest had a hard time hitting shots in the second half. Even though they had a hard time hitting shots they were not afraid to shoot the ball.

Washburn did a good job of getting everyone the ball on offense.

Southwest couldn’t get their offense going in the second half. They were not afraid to shoot the ball from behind the three-point line.

Jones came up with some big layups late in the contest.

Washburn came away with the 77-62 victory over Southwest.
