Metro Youth Sports Media put on an Under The Radar Showcase at Macalester College.

In the first game it was the class of 2018 game which featured top prospects from the next four graduating classes.

The score went back and forth early in the game neither team got up by more than five points.

Elite pushed the ball down the floor and scored on fast breaks.

Elite’s Zion Stanford was all over the floor. Stanford was able to get past his defenders and was able to make layups.

Elite was able to handle the pressure that Hype applied and was able to create turnovers and hit shots.

At halftime the score was Elite 31, Hype 27.

As the second half got underway Hype continued to swing the ball around the three-point line as they were able to take three-point shots.

Elite’s Anders Nelson got hot from behind the three-point line. He knocked down deep shots with defenders in his face.

Team Elite was too much for Hype in the second half. Elite was able to hit shots whenever they wanted to and Hype was not able to hit shots they put up.

Elite came away with the 65-50 victory over Hype.

The next game was the class of 2017

Both teams looked to push the ball down the floor and looked to score easy baskets. That was difficult to do because the defensive pressure made it difficult for either team to get a shot up.

After a slow start Elite started to pass the ball around the three-point line with confidence and was able to get into a shooting rhythm.  Elite’s Tywhon Pickford came up with some deep three-point shots. He was able to beat his defenders and get to the basket and make layups.

Both teams played at a slow pace. They both were able to swing the ball around the three-point line to take time off the clock.

At halftime the score was Elite 29, Hype 8.

As the second half got underway Elite continued to hit shots that they put up. Hype did come to life in the second half however. Hype’s DJ Hunter and Gonnar Mar came up with some big shots.

Elite’s Jericho Sims was all over the floor. On the offensive end he drove to the basket and was able to make layups. On defense Sims was able to slow down the guy that he was guarding. Sims was also able to grab rebounds.

Hype tried to make a comeback late in the second half but they were unsuccessful. Elite came away with the 49-48 victory over Hype.  

The next game was the class of 2016 game 7:30

Elite’s Brock Bertram was all over the floor. He was able to get to the basket and make layups. His defenders had a hard time defending him because of his size.

The score went back and forth early in the contest. Neither team went on a run.

Hype‘s Patrick Dembley was able to get past his defenders and make layups. He knew where his teammates were on the floor and was able to get them the ball in spots where they could hit shots.

Teammate Sam Baker hit layups on fast breaks.

Elite had a difficult time hitting shots throughout the first half. Even though they couldn’t hit shots they were not afraid to shoot them.

At halftime the score was Hype 33, Elite 18.  

As the second half got underway Hype continued hit shots throughout the second half. They were a little quicker than Elite.

Elite continued to push the ball down the floor and scored baskets in transition.

Both teams were not afraid to get the crowd going as they were some amazing slam dunks.

Elite hit baskets late in the second and got to within two at 60-58 with 15.9 seconds left in regulation.

Both teams played hard throughout the game but in the end Hype came away with the 65-58 victory over Elite.

In the final game of the evening it was the class of 2015. Both teams raced up and down the floor looking for fast break layups.

Hype moved the ball down the floor well as they were able to come up with fast breaks and moved the ball down the floor well.

The score went back and forth throughout the first half. Neither team went on a run as there were many ties and lead changes throughout.

Both teams did a good job of moving the ball down the floor and talking to their teammates.

At halftime the score was Hype 38, Elite 36.

The second half got off to a quick start as both teams continued to race up and down the floor looking to score baskets.

Hype’s Grantham Gillard was able to knock down deep three-point shots. His defenders were not able to slow him down on the offensive end.

There were many dunks throughout the second half. Neither team went on a run.  

Both teams looked to keep the high energy and slam dunks going late in the contest. In a high flying competitive game Hype came away with the 74-72 over Elite.

MANCHESTER CITY VS OLYMPIACOS

A large crowd was on hand at TCF Bank Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota for the Gunnies Cup soccer match between Manchester City and Olympiacos on August 2, 2014 .

Olympiacos looked to get on the board early as they moved the ball down the field well. They were able to attack the goal.

Manchester City looked to trap the ball when Olympiacos was on the offensive end. Manchester City did a good job of moving the ball down the field and keeping it away from the goal.

Manchester City Goaltender Joe Hart made good saves in the first half. He dove on the ground and caught balls that were shot at him.

Olympiacos did a good job of setting each other up. They called for the ball well and they knew where their teammates were on the field.

Manchester City had chances to score throughout the first half. Olympiacos Lonnis Maniatis came up with some good saves in the first half.

There was a mandatory water break 30 minutes into the first half.

Manchester City’s Stevan Jovetic scored with the assist going to Samir Nasri in the 35th minute.

In the 37th minute Olympiacos’ Dimitrios Kolovos scored with the assist going to Ionnis Maniatis.

Manchester City’s Aleksander Kolarov received a yellow card in the 45th minute of the first half.

At halftime the score was tied at 1.

As the second half got underway both teams continued to move the ball down the field well. Both teams attack the ball and were able to make good passes to each other.

In the 53nd minute Kolarov found the net for a goal. That made the score 2-1 Manchester City.

In the 66th minute Olympiacos Dimitrios Diamantakos found the goal again for his second goal of the match.

That made the score Olympiacos 2, Manchester City 2.

The game was tied at 2 after regulation. The game went into penalty kicks.

Olympiacos won the game on penalty kicks.

ARE PARENTS TOO CRITICAL OF THEIR SONS’ BASKETBALL PERFORMANCE?

Are parents of student athletes to critical of their sons’ performance on the basketball court? I ask that question to myself sometimes when I walk into a gym and find myself hearing parents shouting instructions and coaching from the sideline.

During the summer period kids go play on the AAU circuit for different reasons. Athletes want to get the best out of the AAU season while trying to get better for the high school or in some cases it is a time for kids to get recognized by college coaches.

I do truly believe that parents play a HUGE role in a player’s life on and off the basketball court. The thing that seems to bother me while I attend games and cover different games are the parents that think that they have to scream and yell and try to coach their own kid while on the sideline.

I have no problem with parents cheering for their kid on their team but what I have a problem with is when parents take it too far.

MND1 SUMMER BASKETBALL CLASSIC THURSDAY NIGHT

The MND1 (Formerly Minnesota Pump N Run) Summer Classic took place in Bloomington, Minn on July 10. On the first night of action it was all younger teams, as 14u and 15u games were played at Bloomington Jefferson High School. This year’s tournament was held Bloomington Jefferson High School.

Teams from across the country converged on the Twin Cities metro area to play in a four day tournament. Teams in every division play in a round robin tournament and then be placed in brackets based on their win-loss record. Then based on how teams do throughout the tournament they keep advancing through their bracket. Teams play their way to a championship or if they lose they are placed on the other side of the bracket and play out the consolation round.

At Jefferson in a very warm gym across three courts teams squared off in the younger divisions.

15U MINNESOTA PHENOM VS MINNESOTA WARRIORS

In a 15u division game Minnesota Phenom went up against Minnesota Warriors. The Warriors started out hot as they built a 5-2 lead with fourteen minutes left in the first half.

The Warriors sped up and down the floor as they were able to make fast break baskets. Phenom was not able get back on defense.

It took a while for Phenom to get into a shooting rhythm. Phenom looked out of sync offensively early.

Warriors played both man-to-man and zone defense. The defensive pressure made it difficult for Phenom to hit mid-range jump shots.

Phenom couldn’t get their shots to fall throughout the game.

Warriors came away with the 70-36 victory over Phenom.

Overall it is a great way to see a lot of talent of ball players on every age level.

2014 MAJOR LEAGUE ALL STAR BASEBALL WEEKEND-FAN FEST AND CONCERT

With the All Star game comes a weekend of fun activities for fans to do. On Saturday, July 12, I went and checked out Fanfest and a concert.

I didn’t know what to think about the Fan Fest when I started thinking of the events around the All Star game.

The Minneapolis Convention Center was turned into a huge baseball museum of sorts. There were pictures explaining the history of the league.

Each part of the history of the game was broken down into different parts of the Convention Center.

They started with the Negro League and you could read history about that area of baseball.

They had a different section on the World Baseball Classic. They had old highlight videos of real game footage on that area of time.  

One of the most areas that got a lot of attention by the fans was the Baseball Hall Of Fame. They had artifacts from different players who are part of the Baseball Hall Of Fame.

If you are a gamer they had different baseball video games with contests that fans could play.

Local media stations along with national media outlets were on hand broadcasting from the Fan Fest.

Throughout the event former current and future players showed up throughout the day to sign autographs. There were also sessions where fans could have a question and answer sessions with different players. There were also many chances to take photos and autographs with players, both past, current and future.

There was also a large section for silent and live auctions going on. Articles that were available for the auction were old game-used uniforms, lineup cards, gloves, bats, balls, etc.

In the middle of the Convention Center a huge makeshift field was set up. There was always action going on, on the field. Weather it was a t-ball game or a clinic the big field was a big hit for fans.

If you were looking to buy any All Star official shirts and apparel there was lots of chances to do that as all the teams were represented.

Overall I really enjoyed my time at the Fan Fest. You do truly need to spend a lot of time to get

through everything and bring your billfold and be prepared to shell out a lot of money for that All Star apparel.

Saturday night there was also free huge concert at TCF Bank Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota. There were multiple ways fans could win free tickets to the show. The show featuring the Imagine Dragons with Atmosphere as the leadoff group.

I thought that the concert was very good and entertaining.

LEBRON JAMES IS HEADED BACK TO THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS

NBA basketball player LeBron James is headed back to the Cleveland Cavaliers. According to multiple sources on June 11, James has decided to come back home as he decided to come back to Cleveland.

James played his first seven years in Cleveland and then he became a free agent after the 2009-2010 season. James made an announcement on during a TV special on ESPN that he would be signing with the Miami Heat.

As soon as he made that announcement that he would be going to Miami there was outrage by fans in Cleveland as fans got upset with James with his decision to move. Some fans were so distraught that they took to the streets to protest, burning James jerseys and starting fights in the streets.

While with Miami, James took them to the playoffs four years in a row. The Heat won back-to-back titles in 2012-2013. In the 2014 finals the San Antonio Spurs beat the Heat 4-1 in the best of 7 series.

2014 MINNESOTA FOOTBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION ALL STAR FOOTBALL GAME

Clemens Stadium on the campus of St. Johns University was the site the 2014 South vs. North All Star football game. High school coaches from across the state selected players to play in this annual game. The game was played under a light mist with the sun poking through the clouds.

South kicked off to the North. North got the ball on the 20 yard line as the kicked went out of the back of the end zone.

North kept the ball on the ground on the first possession. North quarterback Keaton Studsrud knew what plays that he wanted as he kept the ball for a five yard first down. Studsrud got injured on a play and left.

North kept the ball on the ground as they looked to rush the ball. North fumbled the ball and South came up with it on the North 35 yard line.

South kept the ball on the ground as Anthony Anderson came up with a 15 yard first down rush.

South attacked the defense as they were able to move the ball down the field. South moved the ball down the field slowly as they were able to pick up short runs. On fourth-and-goal they went for it and were not able to come up with a touchdown.

The North took over on their own one yard line. North quarterback Michael Herzog came in to the game after the Studsrud injury. The defense came up big as they were able to get to Herzog and take him down. On fourth-four to go they punted the ball.

South took over on the North 49 yard line.

South’s Luke Becker came up with a 14 yard reception. Isaiah Brower came up came up with a first down run. Jamiah Newell came up with a first down on a 17 yard run. On second down and eight yards to go Anderson came up with a touchdown.

The extra point was good by Reid Taubenheium was good.

With 3:41 left in the first quarter the score was South 7, North 0.

The North got the ball back on the 18 yard line after a short kick off. North continued to push the ball down the field picking up first downs. North was intercepted by South’s Sam Fenske and they took over on their 21 yard line.

After one quarter the score was South 7, North 0.

South’s Joey Lee found Luke Becker for a huge reception but there was an offensive penalty.

Anderson kept on coming with another first down. Trevor Nissen also came up with 30-yard first down reception.

South called a timeout with 8:58 left in the second quarter. The score was South 7, North 0.

South looked to get into the end zone as they found the end zone on a Nick Rooney one yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was good.

With 8:49 left in the second quarter the score was South 14, North 0.

South kicked off after the touchdown. North was not able to move the ball. They had to punt the ball on fourth down and 10.

South’s Luke Becker came up with a 28 yard reception. South’s Jamiah Newell came up with a few good rushes that lead to first downs. Rooney came up with a 12 yard pass to Matt Christenson.

The extra point attempt was good.

With 5:26 left in the second quarter the score was South 21, North 0.

South kicked off after the touchdown.

North got the ball back after the touchdown. They weren’t able to move the ball so they punted the ball on fourth and long.

South looked once again to move the ball down the field any way that they could. Lee found Dalton Clouse for a first down. Rooney got the ball in his hands and he picked up short runs for first downs.

At halftime the score was South 21, North 0.

North kicked off to start the third quarter. South kept the ball on the ground as they kept the ball in the hands of Anderson. Anderson kept on coming up with big plays. South wasn’t able to get a first down so they punted on fourth-and 12.

North kept the ball on the ground as they looked to pick up yards in the run game. They were not able to come up with a first down so they turned it over on downs.

The South got the ball on their own 40 yard line. South continued to move the ball down the field on the run. Luke Becker came up with a 24 yard reception. South’s Anderson came up with another touchdown run on a three yard run. The extra point attempt was good.

With 4:38 left in the third quarter the score was South 27, North 0.

South kicked off to the North after the touchdown. North fumbled the ball and South took over on the

North’s nine yard line. Rooney found Matt Christenson for an eight yard touchdown reception.

The extra point attempt was good.

With 3:37 left in the third quarter the score was South 34, North 0.

South kicked off after the touchdown. North’s Carlton Djam caught a 16 yard pass from Michael Herzog for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was not good.   

With 1:41 left in the third quarter the score was South 34, North 6.

That was the score after three quarters of play.

North’s Chad Johnson caught a 39 yard pass for a touchdown. The two point conversion was good.

With 11:01 left in the fourth quarter the score was South 34, North 14.

South got the ball back after the touchdown.  

South continued to pound the ball down the field as they looked to get the ball into the end zone.

South fumbled the ball and North took over on their 10 yard line.

North looked to the air Fourth quarter. North’s Chad Johnson caught a 39 yard pass from Herzog for a touchdown with 11:01 left in the fourth quarter. The extra point attempt was good.

Possessions switched back and forth throughout the fourth quarter. With 2:50 left to go in regulation.

South’s Reid Taubenheim nailed a 52 yard field goal which was an All Star game record.

The score with 2:50 in regulation was South 37, North 14.

North wasn’t done as they marched down the field as Herzog found Noah MacPherson for a 38 yard touchdown reception. The two point conversion was good with 53 seconds left in regulation.

That made the score South 37, North 22. That would be the final.

With the South beating the North 37-22 the All-Time North vs. South Series: South leads overall series 11-9-1.

 

2014 MINNESOTA COMETS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT THURSDAY’S RECAP

On June 26, the Minnesota Comets AAU basketball team put on a boys basketball tournament.

The first day of the tournament is all pool play. Each team is split up into multiple pools and they play everyone in their pool once. Then after pool play is over they are bracketed out within their age group and they play a single elimination tournament.

In the 17U division Minnesota Select Ohnstad went up against Wear Out The Net (WOTN).

Minnesota Select Ohnstad played mostly man-to-man defense. It was hard for WOTN to take uncontested shots.

Minnesota Select raced up and down the floor and were able to hit their layups throughout the first half.

WOTN had a difficult time hitting mid-range jump shots.

At halftime the score was Minnesota Select 36, WOTN 27.

As the second half got underway Minnesota Select continued to push the ball down the floor as they looked to score baskets in transition.

WOTN pushed took their time of the offensive end. They looked to set up plays that they wanted run.

WOTN did a good job of getting everyone involved in the offense.

WOTN got hot midway through the second half. They were able to slow down Minnesota Select Ohnstad and come up with some quick baskets.

The score went back and forth throughout the second half.

WOTN continued to come up with some big plays as everyone was able to knock down deep three-point shots and layups.

WOTN slowed Minnesota Select Ohnstad down. WOTN had difficulty shooting late in the contest.

The score went back and forth the last four minutes of the game.

Minnesota Select came away with the 65-60 victory over WOTN.

2014 GRASSROOTS NATION ALL STAR GAME

On June 22, Concordia University in St. Paul, Minn. was the spot for the 2014 Grassroots Nation All Star basketball game. There were four different teams. The games were 16 minutes.

HUSTLER NATIONS VS EASTSIDAZ

 

Both teams pushed the ball down the floor looking to score baskets in transition.  Eastsidaz' Quinton Jackson hit deep three-point shots. His teammates got the ball to him behind the three-point line.

Both teams looked to make ally-oop slam dunks.

 

Each team looked to go one-on-one as both teams played man-to-man defense.

 

Hustler Nations' Cam Rundles and Jamar Diggs both came up with some nice mid-range jump shots.  Diggs was also not afraid to pass to teammate Stephon Williams who knocked down big shots throughout the game.

Eastidaz won the game by the final score of 50-44. 

AND1 VS SAM’S CLUB

Both teams got into a shooting rhythm early. Sam’s Club's Troy Bell shot the ball well from mid-range as he was able to get baskets on pull up mid-range jump shots. If Bell didn’t think that he could make a shot he passed it.

Bell and Sam’s Club was able to slow down And 1’s offensive productivity by guarding them.

Sam’s Club came up with fast-break layups. They did a good job of getting by the And1 defenders.

Sam’s Club came up with the 43-26 victory over And1.

CARTER NATION VS NEW JACK CITY

Carter Nation went up against New Jack City. New Jack City’s Renard Suggs stepped up and knocked down deep three-point shots early and often. Not to be outdone, Carter Nation was not afraid to take long distance shots.

 

New Jack City was able to push the ball down the floor, but they missed some key shots early.

 

Carter Nation came away with the 35-32 victory over New Jack City.

 

GOON SQUAD VS SAM'S CLUB

 

Goon Squad and Sam's Club went up against each other. Goon Squad came out on fire as they stepped up and knocked down three-point baskets.

 

The score went back and forth as neither team went on a run. Neither team was afraid to take deep three-point shots as the other team's defense would allow them to take deep shots.

 

Bell came up with some deep three-point baskets to keep his team in the game.

 

Williams kept his team in the game as he stepped up and continued to hit three-point baskets.

 

Neither team went on a run as the game remained close throughout.

 

Sam Club's David Hicks found the basket on wide-open layups.

 

The game was tied at 44 after regulation. There was a one minute over time period.

 

Bell came up with a layups in the overtime period and Goon Squad's Deanthony Taylor hit a deep three-point shot.

 

Goon Squad came way with the 49-47 victory over Sam's Club. 

 

GOON SQUAD VS HUSTLER NATION

 

Williams came out hot as he knocked down deep three-point shots. There were many long cross court passes as each team came up with fast break baskets.

 

There were many slam dunks as both teams had fast breaks.

 

The score went back and forth throughout the game. Neither team went on a run.

 

Goon Squad came up with some big baskets late in the game.

 

Both of these teams were having fun as they rested on the defensive end.

 

The score went back and forth late in the game and Hustler Nation came away with the 39-37 victory over Goon Squad.

 

AND 1 VS NEW JACK CITY 

 

The score went back and forth early in the contest. Neither team went on a run. New Jack City's Ben Glover came up with a one handed slam dunk that got his team energy.

 

Both teams showed off their dunking skills as both teams mostly shot open court layups and slam dunks.

 

In a game that had a lot of fast breaks and slam dunks and was close throughout New Jack City came away with the 36-31 victory over And 1.

 

EASTSIDAZ VS CARTER NATION

 

Eastsidaz went up against Carter Nation. Both teams came out launching deep three-point baskets. Both teams also looked to push the floor and make layups.

 

Eastsidaz came up with some big shots midway through the contest. Carter Nation kept shooting the ball even though they had trouble hitting shots.

 

Carter Nation had a difficult time scoring baskets as they were not able to hit shots they put up.

 

Eastsidaz cruised to an easy 43-21 victory over Carter Nation.  

 
Over all I thought it was a very fun event. The players enjoyed themselves and the fans did also.
 

MINNESOTA VIKINGS ARE GETTING A NEW FOOTBALL STADIUM AND MAYBE A MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER TEAM

The Minnesota Vikings are getting a new football stadium in downtown Minneapolis. The 2013-2014 season was the last season in the Metrodome.

The Minnesota Vikings will play their games during the 2014 and 2015 seasons at TCF Bank Stadium at the University of Minnesota.

The new Vikings stadium will host the 2018 NFL Super Bowl at the new stadium.

According to Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press: “Members of the Vikings' ownership and front-office group on Tuesday were in Kansas City to peruse the city's Major League Soccer operation. The Vikings want an MLS franchise for their stadium, which will have a 60 percent transparent roof, that's to open in 2016. The MLS season runs from March 1 through November.”

AKOLDA MAYANG COMMITS TO OKLAHOMA

Former Duluth East boys basketball player Akolda Mayang has committed to playing basketball at Oklahoma.

According to RJ Young of SoonerScoop.com: “Oklahoma landed a commitment from one of the top junior college players in the 2015 class in the country on Father's Day.

Indian Hills Community College 7-footer Akolda Manyang made his decision and informed Oklahoma's coaching staff that he wanted to be a Sooner.”

Mayang spent one year at Indian Hills Community College in Iowa.
