In the 17U division the Minnesota Magic took on the top Howard Pulley team in a boys' basketball match up.
Minnesota Magic started the game in a zone defense. They wanted to slow Pulley down.
Pulley looked to set a quick pace early on. They got the ball out of the basket and to the other end of the court.
Minnesota Magic was equally quick. They were all over the court. On the defensive end Minnesota Magic would try to rattle the Pulley players by getting their hands into their faces. They would also yell things to try to distract them from making their plays. Pulley didn’t seem to mind all off the distractions. They used them to their advantage.
Pulley looked to get the ball into the hands of Siyani Chambers. Chambers brought the ball down the court and looked to get his teammates involved in the plays.
Minnesota Magic went into a zone defense. That made it a little difficult for Pulley to set up into their plays.
Pulley was able to get into their offense late in the half. They were able to make some easy baskets.
Kyle Washington for Pulley was all over the boards. He came down with some nice rebounds. Washington would get the ball to one of his guards to push it down the court.
Rodney Ownes for Minnesota Magic was all over the court. He would drive to the basket hard and take the ball hard to the basket.
The score went back and forth throughout the first half.
At halftime the score was Howard Pulley 34 and Minnesota Magic 29.
Howard Pulley's Quinton Lee Hooker was all over the court. On the defensive end he just hounded the offense. He was able to frustrate the players he was guarding.
Minnesota Magic started the second half in their zone defense. They switched up between man-to-man and zone a lot throughout the first half. They looked to do that a lot in the second half as well.
The score went back and forth throughout the second half. Neither team was able to go on a run.
Pulley strung some baskets together with just under 5:00 left in regulation. Minnesota Magic didn't back down as they went after all of the rebounds.
The score was tied at 67 with 30 seconds left in regulation. Rodney Ownes hit a shot with just under 3 seconds left and that gave the Magic a two point lead.
The Minnesota Magic came away with the 69-67 victory over Howard Pulley.
