The Duluth East Greyhounds and the Edina Hornets squared off in girls High School action in the quarterfinals of the Minnesota State High School League state tournament at the Target Center. The Greyhounds came into the game with a record of 22-5. The Hornets came into the game with a record of 25-4.
It took a while for each team to get used to the bigger floor at the Target Center. It was also quiet in the Target Center as neither team really brought a big crowd to the game. Each team did bring a band though to keep everyone entertained during stoppages of play.
The Hornets got the ball into the hands of Emma Rowland. Rowland was all over the floor. She was able to hit shots from everywhere on the floor.
The Hornets called a timeout with 10:18 left in the first half. After almost 9 minutes of play The score was Greyhounds 16 and Hornets 7.
Neither team was exceptional on the scoring end.
The Hornets Katybeth Biewen was all over the floor. She was able to score at will inside the pant. She was also a strong player on the defensive end.
The Greyhounds used both man-to-man and zone defense to confuse the Hornets.
The score went back and forth in the final minutes of the first half. Neither team gave up any easy baskets.
At halftime the score was the Edina Hornets 23 and the Duluth East Greyhounds 21.
As the second half got underway the Hornets jump out to a six point advantage. The Greyhounds didn't like what they saw on the court. The Hornets had a 29-23 lead with 14:09 left when the Greyhounds called a timeout.
McGrory was on fire for the Hornets. She was able to hit shots from where ever she wanted to inside the three-point line. Her teammates did a good job of getting her the ball.
The score continued to go back and forth for a major part of the first half. Neither team went on a run.
The Hornets Katybeth Biewen was all over the floor. She really got her shot going in the second half. The game was very psychical. Both teams dove on the floor after the loose balls and rebounds.
The score went back and forth throughout the game late in the contest. Neither team gave up easy baskets. In the end Edina came away with the 50-46 victory over Duluth East.
The leading scorers for Duluth East were Shamika Hopkins with 15 points, Alex Freeman with 14 points and Elena Lushine with 10 points. Duluth East shot 20-41from the field. That included going 6-14 from behind the three-point line. East was 0-6 from the free-throw line.
The leading scorers for Ednia were MC McGrory with 26 points and Katybeth Biewen with 16 points. Ednia shot 17-56 from the field. That included going 1-6 from behind the three-point line. They were 15-19 from the free-throw line.
