The Richfield Spartans who came into the game with a record of 26-4 took on the Minneapolis DeLaSalle Islanders who had a record of 27-3.
Both teams looked to push the ball into transition. Richfield was broke early as DeLaSalle got out to a quick 6-2 lead with 14:42 at the first media timeout.
DeLaSalle got up quickly and they looked to put pressure on the Richfield guards to make them turn it over.
Richfield went on a 7-0 run with 12:17 minutes left in the first half. DeLaSalle called a timeout with the score Richfield 9 and DeLaSalle 8.
The score went back and forth throughout most of the first half. Richfield looked to get the ball into the hands of Jessica January. January was all over the floor. On the offensive end she was able to blow by her defenders and get to the basket and score baskets.
After the first run by Richfield the score went back and forth after that in the first half. Richfield seemed like they were rushing their shots.
There was a media timeout with 6:51 left in the first half the score was DeLaSalle 18 and Richfield 13.
Richfield couldn't shoot it well to start off. They were 33% from the field with 6:51 left in the first half.
DeLaSalle's Allina Starr was all over the floor. She was able to hit shots that she put up. She was getting her shots from within the three-point line. Starr was not afraid to shoot the ball. Her teammates knew where she was on the floor and gave her the ball in spots that they knew where she could make it from.
There was media timeout with 2:38 left in the first half. The score was DeLaSalle 28 and Richfield 18.
DeLaSalle switched between man-to-man and zone defense. They looked to confuse Richfield when they were on offense. They were kind of able to do that as they had some trouble making shots.
Star was able to get some nice steals and get her team set up in the offense late in the half. They were able to convert off the turn overs.
At halftime the score was Minneapolis DeLaSalle 33 and Richfield 22.
DeLaSalle shot 14-38 from the field including going 5-16 from behind the three-point line in the first half. Richfield shot 9-25 from the field including going 1-6 from behind the three-point line in the first half. DeLaSalle's bench came up big time in the first half as they were able to chip in 10 points.
At the first media timeout of the second half with 14:38 left to go the score was DeLaSalle 35 and Richfield 28.
Richfield tried their hardest to get back into the game. DeLaSalle was a little quicker on the offensive end.
There was a media timeout with 10:23 left in the second half. The score was DeLaSalle 43 and Richfield 35.
Richfield tried to make a comeback late in the game. DeLaSalle was able to apply pressure on Richfield and that made it hard for Richfield to hit shots.
Starr for DeLaSalle was the floor general. She commanded her team on the floor and she was able to run the offense and her teammates did a good job of feeding off of her energy.
At the final media timeout of the game with 3:25 left in regulation the score was DeLaSalle 57 and Richfield 40.
In a game that got ugly late in the game DeLaSalle ran away with the 65-45 victory over Richfield.
The leading scores for Richfield were Bryann Guyton with 15 points, Jessica January with 12 points, and Sierra Ford-Washington with 10 points. Richfield shot 17-56 from the field that included going 2-13 from behind the three-point line. They were 9-19 from the free-throw line. Richfield brought down a total of 36 rebounds 28 of those on the defensive end.
The leading scorers for DeLaSalle were Allina Starr with 24 points, Tyesenna Johnson with 16 points and Mariah Adanene with 8 points. DeLaSalle shot 24-69 from the field. That included going 5-17 from behind the three-point line. They were 12-20 from the free-throw line. They brought down a total of 58 rebounds 38 of them on the defensive end.
