UPPER IOWA TOOK ON CONCORDIA ST. PAUL IN A MEN’S BASKETBALL CONTEST AT THE GANGELHOFF CENTER

The Upper Iowa Peacocks from Fayette, Iowa traveled to St. Paul, Minnesota to take on the
Concordia St. Paul Golden Bears in a men’s basketball game. Upper Iowa came into the game
with a record of 4-8. Concordia St. Paul entered the game with a record of 7-5.
 
Upper Iowa came out in a man-to-man defense. They wanted to slow down Concordia St. Paul.
 
Concordia St. Paul looked to get the ball into Peter Olafeso’s hands. Peter knew what he wanted
to do with the ball when they were on offense. He knew where his teammates were on the court.
 
Upper Iowa also looked to get out and run. They started out the game on fire as they were able to
hit their shots early in the game.
 
Upper Iowa was in a zone defense. They looked to spread Concordia St. Paul out. Upper Iowa
was able to make their shots early in the game.
 
Concordia St. Paul looked for Dan Vandervieren in the low block. Vandervieren did a good job
with the ball when he had it. He would go strong to the basket with the ball on the low block.
 
Courtney Lynn Tyler did a good job setting up Concordia St. Paul in their offense. He shouted
instructions on where his teammates were supposed to be on the court.
 
Upper Iowa did a good job of getting all of their players involved in scoring on the offensive
end.
 
With 9:35 left to go in the first half we had our first media timeout with the score being Upper
Iowa 24 and Concordia St. Paul 12.
 
Concordia St. Paul went to a zone defense after the timeout. They wanted to spread Upper Iowa
out. Concordia St. Paul did a good job of getting their hands in the faces of the Upper Iowa
players.
 
Peter Olafeso did a good job of driving to the basket. Peter was able to score layups on dives to
the basket.
 
Upper Iowa used both zone and man-to-man defense in the first half. They were able to catch
Concordia St. Paul off guard on a few different possessions.
 
Concordia St. Paul was able to go on a little run late in the first half.
 
At halftime the score was Upper Iowa 41 and Concordia University St. Paul 31.
 
Concordia St. Paul kept looking to shoot the ball in transition in the second half. Tyler was not
afraid to shoot the ball early in the half.
 
Peter Olafeso kept up his good shooting in the second half. Concordia St. Paul went on a run
with 17:00 left in the second half.
 
Concordia St. Paul got within one point at 50-51 with 14:00 left to go in the second half.
 
The score went back and forth midway through the second half as both teams traded baskets.
 
With 9:22 left to go in the contest the score was Concordia St. Paul 57 and Upper Iowa 52.
 
Andrew Kuderer stepped up and was able to knock down some key three-point shots for
Concordia St. Paul.
 
Tyler did a good job of finding his open teammates. He was able to get assists as he found
Vandervieren on the low block and he went to town and was able to score easy baskets.
 
The game was close midway through the second half. Neither team was able to go on a run late
in the second half.

With 5:06 left to go in regulation the score was Concordia St. Paul 67 and Upper Iowa 60.

The game came down to the end. I really thought that both teams played well throughout the
game.

The Upper Iowa head coach received a technical foul because he didn’t like a call that was
called.

Concordia St. Paul fought their way back from being down 10 at the half as they were able to
come away with the 82-73 victory over Upper Iowa.

Upper Iowa shot 23-55 from the field and 19-24 from the free throw line. They were lead in
scoring by Tucker Wentzien with 21 points and Matt Lesan with 20 points. Concordia St. Paul
was lead in scoring by Peter Olafeso with 23, Kenny Olafeso with 14 points and Brent Bartz with
12 points. They shot 24-38 from the free throw line and 24-38 from the free throw line.
