MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST TOOK ON MINNETONKA IN A REGION HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME

It's region football time again across the state of Minnesota. In region 6AAAAA Minneapolis Southwest, who came the game with a record of 5-3 over all and were seeded 7 in the region, took on Minnetonka who came into the game with a record of 6-2 over all and were the number 2 seed in the region.

Minnetonka kicked off to Southwest to start the game. Southwest got the ball on their 18 yard line. Southwest kept the ball on the ground as they looked to get the ball into the hands of Trevon McKinney. Southwest punted the ball on fourth down.

Minnetonka got the ball back and got the ball to DeCeon Schumann. He was able to get a first down. Minnetonka used mostly a running attack. Joe Martinson found Philly Wenderoth for a touchdown with 7:00 left in the first quarter. The two point conversation was good.

With 7:00 left in the first quarter the score was Minnetonka 8 and Minneapolis Southwest 0.

Minnetonka kicked off after the touchdown. Southwest tried to move the ball down the field on a passing plays. They were not able to get a first down and they punted away.

Malcom Moore returned the ball for Minnetonka. After an illegal block against Minnetonka which resulted in a 10 yard penalty Minnetonka got the ball on the 42 yard line. Minnetonka picked up a first down and went for a touchdown. Andre Eubanks scored on a six yard run into the end zone. The extra point attempt was good.

After the touchdown the score was Minnetonka 15 and Southwest 0.

Minnetonka kicked off after the touchdown. Southwest was not able to move the ball on offense. They had to punt the ball away deep in their own territory as they were not able to get good field possession.

DeAndre Singleton made a 39 yard touchdown run for Minnetonka. The extra point attempt was good.

With 2:51 left in the first quarter the score was Minnetonka 22 and Southwest 0.

Southwest got the ball back after the touchdown. Southwest had to punt the ball on fourth down.

Minnetonka got the ball to start the second quarter. Minnetonka kept moving the ball down the field. They were able to confuse Southwest. Deandre Singleton set up a touchdown run midway through second quarter. He brought the ball to the three yard line. Deandre Singleton scored a 3 yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was no good.

With 9:24 left in the second quarter the score was Minnetonka 28 and Southwest 0.

Southwest got the ball after the Minnetonka touchdown. Southwest had to punt the ball away again.

Minnetonka went into their bag of tricks as they wanted to try to fake out Southwest. They were able to do that. Minnetonka did have to bring out their punt team out on the field with 7:15 left on fourth down and 15 to go.
Southwest looked to get some field advantage. They looked keep the ball on the ground as they were able to get their running game going. Dantavian Sears picked up a first down for Southwest.

Southwest called a timeout with 5:41 left the second quarter.

Southwest had to punt on fourth down and nine yards to go.

Bennett Celichowski blocked the punt and got it and ran it in for a touchdown for Minnetonka. The extra point attempt was good.

With 4:11 left in the second quarter the score was Minnetonka 35 and Southwest 0.

Southwest got the ball back.

Southwest took a timeout with 3:32 left in the second quarter.

Southwest punted the ball on fourth down and seven to go.

Minnetonka looked to score late in the quarter. DeAndre Singleton scored a touchdown with 35 seconds left in the second quarter. The extra point attempt was good.

Andre Edbanks scored a touchdown with 21 seconds left. The extra point attempt was good.

At halftime the score was Minnetonka 49 and Southwest 0.

Southwest kicked off to start the third quarter. Minnetonka kept the ball on the ground the first drive of the third quarter. Minnetonka punted the ball on fourth down and 16 to go.

Southwest got picked off and Minnetonka recovered the ball on their 40 yard line.

Minnetonka continued to pound the ball down the field. Minnetonka got lucky and found the end zone again on a Jame McFarlin 15 yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt was good.

With 2:40 left in the third quarter the score was Minnetonka 56 and Southwest 0.

Southwest got the ball after the touchdown. Southwest was able to get some yardage on some nice run plays.

At the end of the third quarter the score was Minnetonka 56 and Southwest 0.

Southwest got the ball to start the fourth quarter. Maurice Alexander caught a pass for a touchdown for Southwest. The extra point attempt was good.

With 8:27 left in regulation the score was Minnetonka 56 and Southwest 7.

Minnetonka got the ball after the touchdown.

Minnetonka came away with the 56-7 victory over Minneapolis Southwest.

I was able to talk to Minnetonka's head coach Dave Nelson and DeAndre Singleton about the game. Dave Nelson thought that Southwest was an improved team. He thought that his team limited their turnovers. He also talked about the season over all and that his team didn't play well against Wayzata or Eden Prairie. He also was able to go into detail about his thoughts on having cancer and how that was a wake up call for him and his team.

I also talked to DeAndre Singletonabout the game. He though that his team played well in a big playoff game. Teams have to make big plays in region games or your season will be over. He thought that his team played like a team in the victory over Southwest and looking forward to the semifinal and wants to play in the championship.
