Orono and Marshall squared off in a girls’ state Class 3A state semifinal basketball game at Williams Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
The score went back and forth early.
There was a media timeout with 14:51 left in the first half. The score was Marshall 8, Orono 6.
Marshall pushed the ball down the floor and were able to score baskets in transition. Marshall went on a 7-0 run in the first half.
There was a media timeout with 10:19 left in the first half. The score was Marshall 17, Orono 10.
Marshall’s Marah Mulso, Callie Graff, Morgan Saugstad and Sarah Buysse all were able to come with mid-range jump shots and layups.
There was a media timeout with 5:53 left in the first half. The score was Marshall 28, Orono 12.
The Marshall defense made it difficult for Orono to come up with uncontested baskets.
There was a media timeout with 2:55 left in the first half. The score was Marshall 31, Orono 18.
Both teams continued to attack the basket late in the first half.
At halftime the score was Marshall 35, Orono 20.
As the second half got underway Marshall continued to push the ball down the floor and come up with layups in transition.
There was a media timeout with 14:42 left in regulation. The score was Marshall 37, Orono 26.
Marshall came up with huge shots throughout the second half.
Orono’s Meghan Mandel stepped up and knocked down huge mid-range jump shots and layups. The defense had a hard time of slowing her down.
Marshall came up with baskets down the stretch.
Marshall came up with the 55-48 victory over Orono.
The leading scorer for Orono was Mandel with 14 points.
The leading scorers for Marshall were Buysse with 13 points, Mulso with 11 points and Graff with 10 points.
