MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST TOOK ON WAYZATA IN THE SECTION 6AAA VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
The Minneapolis Southwest Lakers took on the Wayzata Trojans in the section 6AAA region final in girls’ volleyball. Southwest came into the game with a 25-4 record. Wayzata came in with a record of 27-2. Southwest came in as the number 2 seed in the region and Wayzata had the number 1 seed in the region.
In the first game Wayzata started with the ball. Wayzata scored the first point and that was followed up by Southwest scoring the second point.
Southwest got up 2-4 and Wayzata rallied back and made the score 4-4. The contest was close. Each team looked disciplined.
Wayzata got a 15-12 lead in the first match. They were able to string a few points together. Southwest did not have a response. Southwest called a timeout to regain their composure.
Wayzata won the first game by the score of 25-20.
At the start of the second match Southwest started with the volleyball. Southwest jumped out to an early 3-1 lead. Wayzata didn’t let that detour them. They kept on fighting hard. Their players were diving on the floor trying to save the ball.
Southwest got a 7-2 lead and Wayzata called a time out.
Wayzata strung points together and they came within two at 10-12.
Southwest lead some great volleys that went on for a while. Both teams came up and made some nice plays.
Wayzata could not hit the ball late in the second game. They have a difficult time scoring. Southwest was able to do a good job of capitalizing on Wayzata’s mistakes.
Southwest won the second game by the score of 25-17.
Southwest scored the first point of the third game. Both teams traded points throughout the early part of the third game.
I thought that Wayzata played well throughout the game. They didn’t get down on themselves. They wanted to try to set up a play to slow down Southwest from scoring. Wayzata made a run late in the game.
Wayzata came away with the 25-22 victory in the third match. Wayzata had a 2-1 lead after the third match.
Southwest started with the ball to begin the fourth match. The scoring went back and forth in the beginning of the game. Both teams were able to counter what the other was doing. Neither team was able to go on a run early.
Southwest rallied and they were able to string together points. Wayzata didn’t go away quietly. They were able to answer as they stepped up and were able to slow down Southwest’s run.
The game came down to the wire. Wayzata had a 22-20 lead. Wayzata had a 24-22 lead when Southwest called a time out.
Wayzata came away with the 25-22 victory.
Wayzata was able to come away with the 25-22 over Southwest.
With that win Wayzata will go to the state volleyball tournament.
