Oct. 12 was the first day of the Minnetonka boys’ high school varsity basketball league. High school teams play in games to help them prepare for the high school season. The head varsity coaches can’t coach their own varsity teams but they can watch their teams play.
In the first game Breck took on Apple Valley. Breck started the game in a zone defense. They wanted to force Apple Valley to take deep shots.
Apple Valley did a good job of getting everyone involved in the offense as they swung the ball around the three-point line.
Apple Valley’s Tre Jones was all over the floor. His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball in spots where he could shoot it.
Both teams took their time of the offensive end. Neither team was in a hurry to shoot the ball.
Apple Valley’s defense made it hard for Breck to get quick shots. That made Breck have to work hard for shots that they were wanting to take.
Breck went into a scoring slump midway through the first half as they were not able to hit a shot that they put up.
Apple Valley was able to make shots behind the three-point line. The Breck defense had a hard time defending Apple Valley as they were quicker than they were.
The defensive pressure bothered Breck late in the first half as their offense couldn’t get going late in the first half.
At halftime the score was Apple Valley 31, Breck 17.
As the second half got underway Breck looked to set the tempo as they pushed the ball down the floor and looked for baskets in transition. Apple Valley was able to slow them down in transition.
Apple Valley was able to get steals and turn them into points in the second half. Breck switched between man-to-man and zone defense as they looked to confuse Apple Valley.
Apple Valley didn’t give up on the defensive end. They were much quicker than Breck. Breck fought hard throughout the second half but they were not able to get their shots to drop.
In a game that got out of hand quickly Apple Valley came away with the 64-33 victory over Breck.
