CONCORDIA–MOORHEAD COBBERS TOOK ON AUGSBURG AUGGIES IN A FOOTBALL GAME

On Oct. 18 Concordia-Moorhead faced off against Augsburg in a football game. Morehead came into the game with an overall record of 5-1 and were 3-1 in the MIAC. Augsburg came into the game with an overall record of 2-3 and were 1-2 in the MIAC.

Concordia received the kickoff and started on the 14 yard line. Concordia kept the ball on the ground on their first series. Concordia quarterback Griffin Neal did a good job of getting the ball downfield as he was able to pick up first downs. Concordia found the end zone on a two-yard run by Alex McLean.

The extra-point attempt was good by Benjamin Wagner.

With 9:09 left in the first quarter the score was Concordia 7, Augsburg 0.

Augsburg took over on their own 12 yard line. Augsburg quarterback Aryton Scott looked to get the ball to his running backs and receivers. Augsburg receiver Erickson Saye came up with some nice catches that helped move the ball down the field.

Augsburg called a timeout with 6:07 left in the first quarter. The score was Concordia 7, Augsburg 0.

On fourth-and-24 Augsburg punted the ball and there was no return.

Concordia took over on their own nine yard line. Concordia’s Bryce Shields was able to get by the Augsburg defenders as he kept his feet moving while he was getting tackled. Griffin Neal came up with a first down on a short run. Joe Baune came up with a nice reception for another Concordia first down. Augsburg’s Isaac Hove came up with an interception.

Augsburg took over on their own 37 yard line after the Hove interception. On the next play Scott was intercepted by Monay Swafford.

After one quarter of play the score was Concordia 7, Augsburg 0.

Concordia continued to move the ball down the field as it used both the run and the pass game effectively. Augsburg’s Chris DeVet came up with a sack of the quarterback. Zach Southwick caught a 38-yard pass from Neal for a touchdown. Wagner’s extra-point attempt was good.  

With 12:34 left in the second quarter the score was Concordia 14, Augsburg 0.

Augsburg’s Isiah Malone ran 89 yards for a touchdown. The extra-point attempt was good.

With 12:20 left in the second quarter the score was Concordia 14, Augsburg 7.

Concordia took over on the 37 yard line. Concordia used short passing routes as they looked to move the ball down the field. Concordia punted the ball on fourth-and-six. There was no return.

Augsburg took over on their 22 yard line. Scott picked up a first down on an 11-yard run. Joey Sonnenfeld came up with some nice receptions that moved the ball down the field. Jerise Washington picked up a first down.

Scott found Sonnenfeld for a seven-yard touchdown reception. The extra-point attempt was good.

With 7:06 left in the second quarter the score was tied at 14.

Concordia took over on their own 47 yard line. Zach Southwick came up with some big runs in the second quarter. The Augsburg defense stepped up and was able to slow down the Concordia offense.
On fourth-and-14 Concordia went for it.

Augsburg called a timeout with 4:12 left in the second quarter. The score was tied at 14.

After the timeout they decided to punt.

Augsburg took over on their 10 yard line. Scott found Sonnenfeld for a 48-yard reception. Scott and Sonnenfeld got clicking late in the second quarter. They were able to move the ball down the field effectively. On fourth-and-one Augsburg went for it but the Concordia defense stepped up and was able to stop Scott.

Concordia called a timeout with 56.2 seconds left in the second quarter. The score was tied at 14.

The Augsburg defense stepped up as Chris Devet came up with a sack.

At halftime the score was tied at 14.

Concordia kicked off to start the third quarter. Augsburg took over on their own 16 yard line. Scott continued to look to get the ball down the field. On fourth-and-four Augsburg elected to punt the ball. There was no return.

Concordia took over on their own 23 yard line. Neal came up with another huge run for Concordia for a first down. Brandon Zylstra came up with a huge reception for a first down. Southwick came up with a two-yard touchdown run. The extra-point attempt was good.

With 8:15 left in the third quarter the score was Concordia 21, Augsburg 14.

Augsburg’s Undre Smith-Brewer came up with a 60-yard kick return. Scott found Erickson Saye for a 24-yard touchdown reception. The extra point attempt was good by Ryan Mestnik.

With 7:58 left in the third quarter the score was tied at 21.

Concordia took over on the 27 yard line. Concordia looked down the field as Southwick came up with huge receptions. Southwick came up with a 13-yard touchdown run.

The extra-point attempt was good.

With 4:53 left in the third quarter the score was Concordia 28 Augsburg 21.

Augsburg got the ball back after the touchdown. On fourth-and-one Augsburg punted.

Concordia took over on the 25 yard line. Concordia’s Neal continued to find holes in the Augsburg defense as he was able to move the ball down the field.

After three quarters of play the score was Concordia 28, Augsburg 21.

Concordia looked to get the ball into the end zone early in the fourth quarter. They went for it on fourth-and-one and they were able to come up with a first down. Rick Hutchison came up with a 23-yard touchdown reception. The extra-point attempt was no good.

With 10:48 left in the fourth quarter the score was Concordia 34, Augsburg 21.

Augsburg took over on the on their own 30 yard line. Scott found Scott Bossard for a first down. The Concordia defense was able to get to Scott as he was rushed to throw the ball from the pocket.

Augsburg called a timeout 9:21 left in the fourth quarter.

On fourth-and-10 Augsburg elected to punt the ball. Concordia took over on the 37 yard line. Alex McLean came up with a 60-yard touchdown run. The extra-point attempt was good.

With 8:23 left in the fourth quarter the score was Concordia 41, Augsburg 21.  

Augsburg took over on the 19 yard line. Scott continued to look for his receivers down the field.

Augsburg fumbled the ball and Concordia’s Nate Adams recovered it on the 26 yard line.

Concordia took over on the Augsburg’s 26 yard line.

Concordia called timeout with 4:35 left in the fourth quarter. The score was Concordia 41, Augsburg 21.

Wagner attempted a 40-yard field goal. The attempt was not good.

Augsburg took over on their own 23 yard line. Scott continued to look to get the ball into the hands of Sonnenfeld. Saye came up with a huge first down. Sonnenfeld caught a 57 yard pass from Scott for a first down. The ball was on the one yard line.

Concordia called a timeout with 2:44 left in the fourth quarter. The score was Concordia 41, Concordia 21.

On first down-and-one to go Augsburg attempted a passing play but it was busted up by the defense.

Augsburg called a timeout with 2:33 left in the fourth quarter. On fourth-and-seven.

Augsburg went for it and Scott’s pass to Bossard was incomplete. Concordia took over on the 7 yard line.

Augsburg called a timeout with 2:04 left in the fourth quarter. The score was Concordia 41, Augsburg 21.

Concordia continued to take time off the clock late in the fourth quarter.

Concordia came away with the with the 41-21 victory over Augsburg.
