St. Paul Como Park took on St Paul Central in a football contest at Central High School’s Griffin Stadium. Como Park came into the game with a record of 2-2. St. Paul Central came into the contest with a record of 4-0.
Como kicked off to Central and Andrew Lewis ran 97 yards for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was good. With 11:47 left in the first quarter the score was Central 7 and Como Park 0.
Como Park got the ball on the 30-yard line to start the drive after the Central touchdown. Como was not able to convert on down on their first drive of the game and they had to punt the ball back to Central.
Central got the ball back on Como’s 33-yard line. Central looked for their receivers in short down plays. They did a good job of coming up with 3, 5, 7 yard runs at a time. Central looked to pounce on Como again on their next drive. Central was able to score again on a short drive by Andrew Lewis. The extra point attempt was no good. There was a penalty against Central for a false start and the extra point attempt was not good.
After the touchdown the score was Central 13 and Como Park 0.
Como Park got the ball back after the touchdown. Como looked to Terrance Williams to run the ball. Williams was fast and aggressive. He was able to elude the Central defenders. Como Park fumbled the ball and Centrals Martin Smith came up with the ball and stumbled around for 10 yards before he was brought down by Como Park.
Central was not able to convert on downs and they punted the ball back to Como Park.
Como Park got the ball on their 4-yard line to begin the drive. Como tried to keep the ball on the ground in the first quarter.
After the first quarter the score was Central 13 and Como Park 0.
Como Park got the ball to begin the second quarter. Both teams looked a little sloppy to begin the second quarter. Both teams were called for offside infractions.
Como was not able to convert on downs and they turned the ball over to Central on the 50-yard line. Central was not able to convert on downs and turned the ball over on downs to Como Park.
Como Park got the ball on their 30-yard line. Como fumbled the ball on their 33-yard line and Central recovered the ball.
Centrals Mailk Brooks had a 22-yard run for a touchdown with 4:16 left to go in the quarter. The two-point conversion was good. That made the score Central 21 and Como Park 0.
Como Park’s Gabe Coleman ran the kickoff down for a touchdown with 4:03 left in the quarter. The extra point was no good but there was a pass interference call on Central. Como Park kicked the ball instead after the penalty and the kick was good. After the touchdown and extra point the score was Central 21 and Como Park 7.
Central got the ball back after the Como Park touchdown. Central tried to keep the ball on the ground late in the quarter.
Central looked to go deep in the end zone near the end of the half. They were picked off by Como Park. Como Park looked to pass the ball deep but they were picked off near midfield so St. Paul Central tried to score one last time before the quarter ended. Central’s Ben Ryan tried a field goal with 3 tenths of a second left in the half and was successful.
At halftime the score was St. Paul Central 24 and St. Paul Como Park 7.
As the third quarter got underway Central kicked off to Como Park. Central lined up as they were going to try an onside kick but instead they kicked it deep to Como Park.
Como Park got the ball on their 37-yard line. They were not able to convert and they had to kick the ball back to Central.
Central got the ball on their 39-yard line. Central looked for Devion Johnson to carry the ball early on in the quarter. Central continued their running attack as Malik Glass found the end zone for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was good. With 5:15 left to go in the third quarter the score was Central 31 and Como Park 7.
Como Park got the ball back after the touchdown. Como Park kept doing what they had been successful at most of the night and that was keeping the ball on the ground for short yards runs. Gabe Coleman came up with some nice plays late in the third quarter. He was able to juke his defenders and pick up an average of 5-7 yards per run. Como Park threatened late in the quarter. Terrance Williams scored a touchdown on a short drive with 7 seconds left to go in the third quarter. The extra point attempt was successful. With 7 seconds left the score was St. Paul Central 31 and St. Paul Como Park 15.
Central got the ball after the touchdown and ran the clock out to end the third quarter.
At the end of the third quarter the score was St. Paul Central 31 and St. Paul Como Park 15.
Central got the ball to begin the fourth quarter. Both teams played with a chip on their shoulders early on in the third quarter. They both played aggressively.
Midway through the fourth quarter there was a huge fight in the Como Park’s side of the stands. A bunch of the fans from Central ran across the field to join in the fight. The game was briefly stopped so St. Paul Police and game security could break up the fight in the stands. The game continued with no further problems.
Como Park’s Tony Finken got a touchdown reception with 6:27 left in the fourth quarter. Finken also made the two-point conversion attempt.
With 6:27 left to go in regulation the score was St. Paul Central 31 and St. Paul Como Park 23.
Central got the ball back after the touchdown. Central wanted to punch the ball into the end zone one more time.
St. Paul Central was able to come away with the 31-23 victory over St. Paul Como Park.
