Winona State traveled to Concordia St. Paul for a men's NSIC conference quarterfinal basketball game.
Coming into the game Winona State had a record of 15-7. Concordia St. Paul had a record of 17-9.
Concordia St. Paul came out in a strong man-to-man defense. They looked to slow down Winona
State.
Winona State got out to a quick 5-0 start. They did a good job of getting the ball out of the basket and
going the other way with it.
Concordia called a timeout with 17:01 left in the first half with the score Winona State 7 and Concordia 0.
Concordia St. Paul had a hard time making their shots at the beginning of the game.
Winona State looked to pound the ball inside. They were able to get it into their big man Taylor
Cameron. Cameron did a good job of taking the ball hard to the basket.
Concordia went into a zone defense. They looked to spread Winona State out.
With 8:48 left in the first half there was a media timeout. The score was Winona State 25 Concordia St. Paul 17.
Winona State looked to get the ball into the hands Ben Fischer. Fischer was dead on. He was able to
make shots from everywhere on the court.
Concordia went to a zone defense. They looked to spread the Winona State offense out. Winona State
looked to get the ball to their inside players. Concordia defense made it hard for them to get easy shots.
Winona State called a timeout with 6:46 with the score Winona State 29 and Concordia St. Paul 20.
Concordia’s Isaiah Thomas stepped up and was able to get a big three-point shot that brought
Concordia back to life.
Concordia St. Paul came to life late in the first half. They got hot and were able to make their shots.
Both teams launched three-point shots late in the half. Both teams dove on the floor after loose balls.
At halftime the score was Winona State 41 and Concordia St. Paul 34.
As the second half got underway Concordia came out on fire. They were able to hit a few shots and get
the pace of the game back in their favor.
Kenny Olafeso drove the ball down the court and made a nice little layup. Kenny did a good job of
slowing down his defender. On the offensive end he was able to find his brother Peter as they were able to connect on a few assists.
Winona State called a timeout with 13:22 left in regulation. The score was Winona State 57 and
Concordia St. Paul 45.
Both teams were very physical. They both dove on the floor after loose balls.
Peter Olafeso had a nice steal and was able to come away with a breakaway layup. Peter was very
aggressive on both ends of the floor.
Concordia St. Paul got hot midway through the second half.
With 9:38 left in regulation there was a media timeout. The score was Winona State 59 and Concordia
St. Paul 51.
Peter continued to take the ball hard to the basket. He was fouled on a number of different plays in the
second half.
Xavier Humphery for Winona State came off the bench and was a spark plug for them. He was all over
the court. Humphrey was able to get past his defenders with ease.
Winona State took a timeout with 5:41 left with the score Winona State 69 and Concordia St. Paul 60.
Winona State took a timeout with 3:39 left with the score Winona State 71 and Concordia St. Paul 63.
Concordia St. Paul went to a man-to-man defense. They looked to slow Winona State down in the
waning minutes of the game.
Winona State called a timeout with 1:55 left and the score of Winona State 77 and Concordia St. Paul
63.
Humphery came to life late in the contest. He was able to step up big and make key plays down the
stretch.
Winona State was able to come away with the 86-72 victory over Concordia St. Paul.
The leading scorers for Concordia St. Paul were Peter Olafeso with 20 points and Brent Barz with 14
points, They shot 24-55 from the field including 8-22 from behind the three point line. Concordia shot
16-21 from the free throw line.
The leading scorers from Winona State were Ben Fischer with 24 points, Xavier Humphry with 20
points, Clayton Vette with 18 points and Jon Walburg with 17 points.
After the game I was able to talk to Winona State head coach Mike Leaf and Xavier Humphry about
the game.
