On January 9 Minneapolis Roosevelt and Robbinsdale Cooper squared off in a boys' basketball game.
Roosevelt started out in a zone defense. Cooper started off in a full court zone defense. They put pressure on Roosevelt as they brought the ball down the floor.
It took a while for each team to get into a shooting rhythm.
Roosevelt called a timeout with 16:38 left in the first half. The score was Cooper 4, Roosevelt 0.
Roosevelt passed the ball around the 3-point line as they wanted to force Cooper to shift in the zone.
Roosevelt wasn’t afraid to shoot the ball. They did a good job of getting everyone involved in the offense.
Cooper did a good job of attacking the zone defense. They looked to score mid-range jump shots in the lane.
Cooper wasn’t afraid to get the ball out and push the ball and look for layups in transition. Cooper’s Nathan Hill came up with jump shots and layups in the paint.
Roosevelt had a difficult time scoring for a period of time in the first half. They were not able to hit shots that they put up. Roosevelt did however keep taking shots.
Cooper’s Onte Burns received a technical foul for getting in the face and talking trash to one of the Roosevelt players.
After a slow start offensively for Roosevelt they were able to come up with layups.
Both teams did take a lot of time off the clock by swinging the ball around the 3-point line in the first half.
Roosevelt’s Martez Rodgers came up with 3-point shots. The defense had a hard time guarding him from behind the 3-point line.
Cooper ran a motion offence where they set a lot of screens and talked on the offensive end.
Roosevelt’s Martez Rogers and Elijah Hannah both came up with baskets in the first half. There teammates were able to get them the ball in the paint were they made most of their mid-range jump shots and layups.
Cooper’s Melvin Newbern came up with layups and jump shots. On the defensive end Newbern was able to slow down the guy that he was guarding.
With 1:37 left in the first half, Cooper’s Beijan Newbern received a technical foul for saying something to the official.
At halftime the score was Roosevelt 30, Cooper 21.
Cooper stayed in their zone defense in the second half. They wanted to force Roosevelt to take 3-point shots.
Roosevelt called a timeout with 13:56 left in regulation. The score was Roosevelt 33, Cooper 24.
Roosevelt took a lot of time off the clock by swinging the ball around the 3-point line as they wanted to find gaps in the zone defense.
Cooper went to a full court man-to-man press, they wanted to turn Roosevelt over and score baskets off the turnover.
Roosevelt called timeout with 10:39 left in regulation. The score was Roosevelt 33, Cooper 29.
Both teams scrambled after the ball and dove on the floor after loose balls.
Neither team went on a run in the second half. The game was very physical on both ends of the floor.
Cooper’s Bryant Mayfield came up with mid-range jump shots and layups. His teammates did a good job getting him the ball where he could shoot it.
Cooper called a timeout with 6:44 left in regulation. The score was Cooper 37, Roosevelt 35.
Cooper did a good job of getting everyone the ball on the floor. Cooper took a lot of time off the clock late in the game.
Roosevelt looked to score on fast breaks late. They looked to speed up the tempo of the game.
Roosevelt called a timeout with 3:35 left in regulation. The score was Cooper 46, Roosevelt 37.
Roosevelt stepped up their defensive pressure. They looked for seals and layups. Cooper didn’t fold under the defensive pressure.
Roosevelt called a timeout with 1:35 left in regulation. The score was Cooper 48, Roosevelt 41.
The game was very physical throughout.
Cooper came away with the 53-41 victory over Roosevelt.
The leading scorer for Roosevelt was Rodgers with 19 points.
The leading scorers for Cooper was Melvin Newbern with 28 points.
