MINNESOTA SUPER 80 BOYS’ BASKETBALL COMBINE

On Nov. 2, high school basketball players from around the Twin Cities metro area attended the Minnesota Super 80 Boys’ Basketball Combine at North High School. There were two age groups of players: Players in grades 6-8, and another event for players in grades 9-12. According to the Super 80 Super Showcase web site: “This showcase is designed to provide all attending players an opportunity to demonstrate their skills to the DII & Junior College coaches, scouts & media.”

Players were on their speed and their agility. They were also got their vertical jump tested.
Ricky Davis, who has played for multiple NBA teams, spoke to the players about his career and growing up. He also talked about how big a high school education is and to keep their heads in the books while they keep their basketball dreams alive.

Players broke out into different groups and they played five-on-five games. There were two different games going on at the same time.

These games gave players a chance to go up against different players that they wouldn’t usually go up against. The games also gave players to showcase their talent in a game situation.
Teams played multiple games. The games were 20 minutes with a running clock and subs coming in every five minutes.

After the first 20 minutes of play teams switched courts, and then played another 20 minutes.

Players played with a lot of intensity throughout the event.

Overall I thought that the combine went well. I thought players were able to show their skills in a game-time environment. I thought that the players got something out of the experience themselves. It gave them a chance to play against players who also wanted to show their basketball skills.
