Eden Prairie took on Wayzata in the class AAAA Minnesota State High School League state championship game.
Eden Prairie kicked off to start the game. Wayzata looked to get the ball into the hands of Erik Roti. Wayzata was not able to get a first down on their first drive. They punted the ball to Eden Prairie.
Eden Prairie had to punt the ball on fourth down and four yards to go.
Wayzata looked to their run game. Their running backs kept them in the game. Wayzata's quarterback Nick Martin was intercepted by Grant Gordan of Eden Prairie.
The score was tied at 0 at the end of the first quarter.
Eden Prairie got the ball back and they looked towards the end zone to a touchdown. They settled for a field goal instead on a Jake Ibach 36yard field goal attempt.
With 11:49 left in the second quarter the score was Eden Prairie 3 and Wayzata 0.
Eden Prairie kicked off Wayzata after the field goal. Wayzata punted the ball on fourth down and 13 yards to go.
With 10:43 left there was a media timeout.
Eden Prairie was not able to get a first down and they turned it over to Wayzata. Wayzata got the ball back. Wayzata was intercepted by Dan Freed. That gave Eden Prairie the ball back.
At halftime the score was Eden Prairie 3 and Wayzata 0.
Wayzata kicked of to Eden Prairie to start the third quarter.
Eden Prairie took a timeout with 10:47 left third quarter.
Eden Prairie looked to go deep as they brought all of their receivers out and the quarterback went deep on the first possession of the quarter.
There was a media timeout with 8:43 left in the third quarter the score was Eden Prairie 3 and Wayzata 0.
Wayzata punted the ball on fourth down and eight yards to go.
Eden Prairie got the ball back and they kept it on the ground. Andrew Larson found a hole and he ran 28 yards for a first down. Eden Prairie attempted a field goal and it was good.
At the end of the third quarter the score was Eden Prairie 6 and Wayzata 0.
Wayzata got the ball to start the fourth quarter. Ethan Zeidley revived a pass and picked up a first down. Wayzata wanted to get the ball down the field in a hurry. They were able to get the ball into the hands of Antonio Ford. Nick Martin found Ethan Zeidler for a first down. Wayzata kicked a field goal with 7:30 left to go in regulation.
With 7:30 left to go in regulation the score was Eden Prairie 6 and Wayzata 3.
At 7:30 there was a media timeout.
Eden Prairie got the ball back after a fumble. Eden Prairie Jake Woodring came up with a nice reception and that set up an Andrew Larson touchdown. The extra point attempt was good.
With 2:45 left to go in the fourth quarter Andrew Lawson ran 10 yards for a touchdown for Eden Prairie. The extra point attempt was good.
Eden Prairie came away with the 13-3 victory over Wayzata..
After the game I talked to Eden Prairie's Jake Woodring, Andrew Larson and Mike Grant about the game. I was also able to talk to Wayzata head coach Brad Anderson about the game.
Jake Woodring said, “We came in as underdogs. We had a great attitude. Our o-line stepped up when they needed to. The reverse flea flicker was a great play and it will go down in Eden Prairie lore. And we have a great quarterback.
Wayzata's Brad Anderson said, “Points were at a premium tonight. Both teams came out slow. Turnovers hurt us.”
Wayzata's Andrew Larson said, “Our team came up in pressure. And our d-line played awesome.”
Eden Prairie’s head coach Mike Grant said, “It was a hard fought game. Our kids came up with some big plays at the end. This is a great group of kids. It’s an unbelievable feeling to win it again. We came into the game as underdogs and our defense stepped up.”
