On Feb. 4, Fridley and Holy Angels went up against each other in a girls’ basketball game. Going into the game Fridley had a record of 7-9 while Holy Angels record was 12-6.
Fridley started the game off in a zone defense. Holy Angels passed the ball around the 3-point like taking time off the clock. Holy Angels also looked to score layups on fast breaks.
Holy Angels took their time on the offensive end. They were able to get everyone involved in the offense.
It took both teams a while to get acclimated on what the other team was doing on the defensive end.
Fridley’s Cadence Hansen looked to make 3-point shots and layups. Her teammates were able to get her the ball in spots where she could shoot it.
Holy Angels Francesca Vascellaro picked up two quick fouls, but she kept on attacking the basket and going after the player that he was guarding.
Holy Angels came up with steals on the defensive end and turned them into layups on the offensive end.
Holy Angels went to a full-court press and looked to turn Fridley over. Isabella Henry came up with mid-range jump shots and layups in the first half.
Fridley’s Cadence Hansen came up with mid-range jump shots and layups. She was able to come off screens and get to the basket.
Holy Angels Rachel Kawiecki came up with mid-range jump shots and layups. Her teammates were able to get her the ball in spots where she could shoot it. If Kawiecki didn’t think that she had a good shot, she would pass it off to one of her teammates.
Hansen continued to come up with shots throughout the first half. She kept her team in the game. She did a good job of talking to her teammates on both ends of the floor.
Fridley’s Kunga Namgyal came up with mid-range jump shots and layups. She wasn’t afraid to shoot the ball in traffic.
Vascellaro got her shot to drop late in the first half. She didn’t lose any confidence in shooting the ball in the first half.
Fridley called a timeout with 6:21 left in the first half. The score was Holy Angels 28, Fridley 16.
Holy Angels looked to trap the ball and force Fridley to turn the ball over out of the trap. Holy Angles used their quickness to get out of the trap and advance the ball down the floor.
Fridley did a good job of moving the ball down the floor and getting past the defense and coming up with layups in transition.
Fridley wasn’t making as many baskets at Holy Angels was throughout the first half. Fridley’s Meadow Gillispie moved the ball well on the floor. She was able to dribble past her defenders and come up with layups. Gillispie was also able to move her feet on the defensive end as well.
Fridley looked to trap Holy Angels late in the game and come up with the layups on the offensive end.
Fridley called a timeout with 2:25 left in the first half. The score was Holy Angels 43, Fridley 21.
Holy Angels continued to attack the basket late in the first half. Neither team gave up easy shots in the first half.
At halftime, the score was Holy Angels 48, Fridley 28.
As the second half got underway Fridley started in a zone defense as they did in the first half. Holy Angels attacked the zone defense and passed the ball around the 3-point line looking to get into their motion offense.
Fridley called a timeout with 16:19 left in regulation. The score was Holy Angels 53, Fridley 28.
Fridley continued to get everyone involved in the offense as they distributed the ball well amongst themselves.
Holy Angels Kassandra Caron, Rachel Kawiecki, Grace Massaquoi all came up with shots in the second half. The Fridley defense had a tough time slowing them down on offense.
Holy Angels called a timeout with 12:08 left in regulation. The score was Holy Angels 64, Fridley 30.
Fridley stepped up their defensive pressure in the second half. They wanted to make it difficult for Holy Angles to get open looks at the basket.
Namgyal came up with 3-point shots in the second half. She kept on attacking the basket looking and making layups as well.
Vascellaro came up with layups in the second half and really clamped down on the defensive end.
Fridley came up with layups in the second half. Fridley was able to able to come up with steals and layups late as well.
Fridley called a timeout with 4:26 left to go in regulation. The score was Holy Angels 76, Fridley 43.
Gillespie came up with 3-point shots late in the game. Her teammates kept on feeding her the ball as she came off screens and got to the basket.
Both teams played hard throughout the game. Holy Angels used their quickness to get past their defenders and get to the basket. Neither team gave up easy shots. Fridley just struggled shooting the ball throughout the game.
Holy Angels came away with the 82-56 victory over Fridley.
The leading scorers for Fridley were Cadence Hansen with 26 points, and Kunga Namgyal with 11 points.
The leading scorers for Holy Angels were Vascellaro with 17 points, Kassandra Caron with 16 points, Grace Massaquoi with 14 points, and Rachel Kawiecki, and Isabella Henry both with 10 points.
