On Jan. 31, Minneapolis DeLaSalle and Academy of Holy Angels in a boys’ Junior Varsity basketball game. The DeLaSalle JV head coach was David Collier, and the Holy Angels JV coach was Terrel Barnes.
Holy Angels started the game out in a zone defense. DeLaSalle looked to control the tempo of the game from the start. DeLaSalle also started the game in a zone defense.
Both teams took a lot of time off the clock and DeLaSalle was able to move the ball down the floor as they looked to score layups in transition.
The score went back and forth early. Neither team went on a significant run early.
DeLaSalle got everyone involved in the offense. They passed the ball around the 3-point line and got everyone involved in the offense.
DeLaSalle was able to turn Holy Angels over and DeLaSalle was able to come up with layups off the turnovers.
DeLASalle’s Tarik Iyob came up with mid-range jump shots and layups. His teammates were able to get him the ball in spots where he could shoot it.
Holy Angels struggled to shoot the ball in the first half. They were not able to make shots they put up. Even though they struggled shooting they kept on attacking the basket.
Holy Angels guard Terrence Roberts brought the ball down the floor and was able to come up with mid-range jump shots and layups. If Roberts didn’t think that he had an open look at the basket he wasn’t afraid to pass it to one of his teammates.
Holy Angels took the ball strong to the basket. Everyone was involved in the offense for Holy Angels.
Holy Angels called a timeout with 7:27 left in the first half. The score was DeLaSalle 26, Holy Angels 15.
DeLaSalle picked up their defensive pressure at half court. They were able to frustrate Holy Angels on the offensive end.
DeLaSalle’s Brandon Hoban came off screens and knocked down deep 3-point shots. His teammates were able to get him the ball in spots where he could knock down shots.
DeLaSalle was able to come up with steals on the defensive end and turn them into layups on the defensive end. DeLaSalle came up with multiple fast-break layups in the first half.
Both teams dove on the floor after loose balls and went after rebounds on both ends of the floor.
Holy Angels continued to attack the basket late in the half. Holy Angels guard Jeffery Robinson II stepped up and knocked down deep 3-point shots to keep his team in the game.
At halftime, the score was DeLaSalle 39, Holy Angels 26.
DeLaSalle’s Hoban and Nasir Whitlock both came up with mid-range jump shots and layups. Their teammates were able to get them the ball in spots where they could shoot it.
DeLaSalle came up with steals early in the second half. They were able to make shots on the offensive end.
Holy Angels Jaylen Boehm-Peterson came up with mid-range jump shots and layups in the second half. He called for the ball and came off screens and got to the basket.
Even though Holy Angels struggled shooting the ball they took the ball hard to the basket as they looked for their shots.
Holy Angels got the deficit down to 10 with just under 10 minutes to go in regulation. They kept on attacking the basket.
Holy Angels took their time on the offensive end. They looked for their shots in the second half. The defensive pressure that DeLaSalle applied made it difficult for them to make shots that they put up.
The game got very physical as both teams looked to go after the ball as there was a lot of contact going to the basket.
Holy Angels called a timeout with 34.1 seconds left in regulation. The score was DeLaSalle 64, Holy Angels 44.
Both teams put their subs in at the final timeout.
Both teams played hard throughout the game. In the end, however, DeLaSalle came away with the 66-44 victory over Holy Angels.
The leading scorers for DeLaSalle were Jaylen Boehm-Peterson with 9 points, Jeffery Robinson II with 8 points and Terrence Roberts with 7 points.
