ANDOVER TOOK ON MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST IN A BOYS’ STATE SOCCER QUARTERFINAL GAME

Chisago Lakes high school was the site of the 2013 Minnesota State High School boys’ quarterfinal state soccer game. Andover who had a record of 14-4-1 went up against Minneapolis Southwest who had a record of 16-1-1.  
 
Both teams moved the ball up and down the field well to start the game. Southwest got everyone involved on the offensive end.
 
The Andover defenders did a good job of trapping the ball and was able to slow down the Southwest attack.
 
Andover’s Andrew Bird had few nice shots on goal but the Southwest goalie Ben Eccles came up with some nice saves.
 
Both teams were very physical. The officials let a lot of play go in the first half. There seemed to be a lot of contact between both teams on plays on the field.
 
Emmanuel Ekunseitan had some nice shots on goal for Andover.  
 
Southwest’s Adam Ulring had some nice shots that were a bit wide of the goal.
 
Ekunseitan committed a foul and received a yellow card for an infraction.
 
Southwest’s Diego Rios was hit in the head during a play and was checked out by medical personnel.
 
Rios also had a couple of nice shots on goal.
 
Southwest’s Midfielder Karl Noergaard scored a goal with 7:20 left in the first half on a short shot.
 
At that point, the score was Southwest 1, Andover 0.
 
 Both teams continued to move the ball down the field.
 
Bird scored a goal for Andover with 58.5 seconds left in the first half.
 
At halftime the score was tied at 1.
 
As the second half got underway both teams continued to attack the goal.
 
The physical play continued throughout the second half. Both teams continued to move the ball well up and down the field in the second half.
 
Southwest had some good shots on goal in the second half. They continued to shoot the ball toward the net.
 
Andover’s Maxwell Marquett scored a goal with 20:00 left to go in the second half.
 
That made the score Andover 2, Southwest 1.
 
Saikou Jallow for Southwest received a yellow card for an infraction.
 
He came back into the game and continued to play hard.
 
In a hard fought game Andover came away with the 2-1 victory over Southwest. With that victory
 
Andover advances to the state semifinals which will be played at the Metrodome on Monday, Oct. 28.
