Apple Valley took on Prior Lake in the second week of the Minnetonka boys’ basketball fall league on Oct. 20.
The game got off to a quick start as each team traded baskets. Neither team went on a run early.
Both teams traded baskets for a period of three minutes in the first half. There were many ties and lead changes throughout the half.
Apple Valley was able to push the ball down the floor and make baskets in transition.
On the defensive end Prior Lake switched between zone and man-to-man defense. They wanted to confuse Apple Valley. They were able to do that on some possessions.
Both teams made it difficult for each other to make shots on the offensive end because of the defense they were playing.
Tyus Jones entered the game late in the first half. Jones took the ball hard to the basket and was able to hit contested lay-ups. The Prior Lake defense had trouble guarding Jones.
At halftime the score was Apple Valley 25, Prior Lake 23.
As the second half got underway both teams came out playing with a lot of intensity as they have been playing with throughout the first half.
Apple Valley continued to look to get the ball into the hands of Jones. Jones knew where his teammates were on the floor at all times as he was able to get them involved in the offense.
Apple Valley strung some baskets together early in the second half. They built a 35-28 lead with 15 minutes left in the second half.
Prior Lake kept on shooting the ball. They were not afraid to shoot the ball from anywhere on the court.
The score was tied at 35 with 13 minutes left in regulation. Both teams did a good job of making baskets in transition.
Apple Valley behind Jones was able to get their offense clicking late in the second half. On the defensive end they were able to slow down the Prior Lake offense.
Prior Lake attacked the basket throughout the game. Apple Valley was too quick for Prior Lake down the stretch.
In a hard fought game Apple Valley came away with the 70-64 victory over Prior Lake.
