WATERTOWN WENT UP AGAINST MANDAN (ND) IN A BOYS’ BASKETBALL GAME

On Dec. 30, Watertown and Mandan (N.D.) squared off in a boys’ basketball game at St. Cloud Cathedral high school. The game used a 35-second shot clock.

Both teams started out in a zone defense. Mandan looked to pass the ball around the 3-point line as they attacked the Watertown zone defense.

On the offensive end for Mandan they passed the ball around the 3-point line. They ran set plays as they set a lot of screens for each other. Mandan got everyone involved in the offense.

Watertown also set a lot of picks for each other. Watertown’s Trae Berhow came up with mid-range jump shots and layups in the first half. If Berhow didn’t think that he had a good shot he was able to find his teammate for the assist.

Both teams took a lot of time off the clock in the first half. The zone defense was effective in slowing the game down. In the zone teams have to swing the ball around the 3-point line because if teams are playing a 2-3 zone there are 2 players in the top of the key and the middle guy in the baseline rotates based on where the ball is.

Berhow was able to come up with defensive rebounds. He was able to get the ball into his teammates hands for fast breaks.

The score went back and forth throughout the first half. Neither team went on a run.

Mandan called a timeout with 4:59 left in the first half. The score was Watertown 19, Mandan 16.

Watertown’s Brett Johnson came up with a deep 3-point shot late in the first half that gave his team energy. The defense had a hard time slowing Johnson down.

Watertown looked to trap the pass as they switched to man-to-man defense. Mandan had trouble scoring late in the first half. The Watertown defense made it difficult for Mandan to score baskets.

At halftime the score was Watertown 27, Mandan 19.

Watertown’s Ben Theisen was all over the floor. On the offensive end Theisen came up mid-range jump shots and layups. His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball in spots where he could shoot it.

Watertown was able to get steals and turn them into baskets on offense. They spread the defense out and forced Mandan to take deep shots.

Watertown looked for layups in their offense. Everyone touched the ball and everyone looked to shoot.

Mandan fought back as they were able to get their shots to fall in the second half.

Watertown called a timeout with 12:06 left in regulation. The score was Watertown 31, Mandan 29.

Berhow came up with some huge layups in the second half. His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball as he drove to the basket.

Watertown came up with layups in the first half. Mandan had trouble guarding the guy making the cuts to the basket for layups.

Johnson continued to come up with mid-range jump shots and layups in the second half. His teammates had confidence in him shooting the ball.

Mandan’s Nick Miller came up with layups off the dribble in the second half. He was also able to make jump shots.

Watertown called a timeout with 6:25 left in regulation. The score was Watertown 42, Mandan 37.

Both teams looked to take deep 3-point baskets late in regulation.

Mandan called a timeout with 4:41 left in regulation. The score was Watertown 47, Mandan 37.

Watertown was able to come up defensive stops late in the game. They slowed down Mandan’s offensive production as they forced Mandan to take rushed shots as time ran off the shot clock.

Mandan’s Justin Fenster came up with deep 3-point baskets late in regulation to keep Mandan in the game.

Mandan called a timeout with 2:24 left in regulation. The score was Watertown 49, Mandan 43.

Both teams played hard throughout the game. Both team’s zone defenses wore the other team down. I thought that the players for both teams were able to figure out the zone defense that the other team was playing and were able to adjust to it.

In a hard fought game Watertown came away with the 57-45 victory over Mandan.

The leading scorers for Mandan were Fenster with 11 points, Miller with 10 points, and Andersen with 8 points.

The leading scorers for Watertown were Berhow with 17 points and Theisen with 10 points.
