WAYZATA WENT UP AGAINST ST. PAUL HIGHLAND PARK IN A BOYS’ BASKETBALL GAME

On Jan. 5, Wayzata took on St. Paul Highland Park in a nonconference boys’ basketball game.

Wayzata started out in a zone defense. Highland Park swung the ball around the 3-point line as they looked to attack the basket.

Highland Park looked was able to push the ball down the floor and looked to score baskets in transition.

Wayzata didn’t let Highland Park dictate the tempo of the game.

Wayzata played mostly zone defense in the first half. That made Highland have to swing the ball around the 3-point line.

Highland Park called a timeout with 12:23 left in the first half. The score was Wayzata 13, Highland Park 2.

Wayzata came up with steals on the defensive end and were able to score on offense off the steals.

Highland Park looked to trap the ball as Wayzata brought the ball down the floor. Wayzata was able to get out of the trap and continued down the floor.

Wayzata called a timeout with 6:14 left in the first half. The score was Wayzata 21, Highland Park 8.

Wayzata was able to score layups off of fast breaks. They did a good job of getting everyone involved in the offense.

Wayzata’s Jack Sowada came up with deep 3-point baskets late in the first half. He was able to shoot over his defender.

Highland Park called a timeout with 1:07 left in the first half. The score was Wayzata 34, Highland Park 10.

At halftime the score was Wayzata 36, Highland Park 12.

As the second half got underway Wayzata continued to push the ball down the floor and score baskets in transition.

Wayzata’s Jack Sowada was all over the floor on the offensive end. He came up with mid-range jump shots and layups.

Highland Park called a timeout with 14:38 left in regulation. The score was Wayzata 49, Highland Park 14.

Highland Park swung the ball around the 3-point line as they looked to get into their offense. The Wayzata’s defense came up with stops and was able to turn them over.

Wayzata was too quick for Highland Park.

Wayzata came away with the 70-28 victory over Highland Park.

The leading scorer for Highland Park was Murphy with 6 points and the leading scorer for Wayzata was Sowada with 19 points.
