SARTELL-ST. STEPHEN WENT UP AGAINST PRINCETON IN A BOYS’ BASKETBALL GAME

On Dec. 29, St. Cloud State University was the site for the Breakdown Sports USA Granite City Holiday Classic.
Sartell-St. Stephen and Princeton squared off in the first game of the day. Sartell started the game in a man-to-man defense. They looked to push the ball down the floor and ran a patterned offense.
Princeton took their time of the offensive end and well. They passed the ball around to each other and commutated well on both ends of the floor.
The score went back and forth early. There were several ties and lead changes.
Princeton’s Adam Williams was all over the floor. On the offensive end, he could make mid-range jump shots and layups. His teammates did a good job of getting him the ball in spots where he could make shots.
Sartell-St. Stephen could get the ball into the hands of Trent Meyer. Meyer got to the basket and made shots.
The defense had a hard time slowing Williams down. He could keep getting to the basket and came up with big shots.
Sartell-St. Stephen called a timeout with 11:55 left in the first half. The score was Princeton 22, Sartell-St. Stephen 9.
Sartell-St. Stephen kept pushing the ball down the floor and got everyone involved in the offense.
There were several ties and lead changes late in the first half.
Sartell-St. Stephen came up with layups off the fast break.
Princeton called a timeout with 7:13 left in the first half. The score was tied at 22.
Sartell-St. Stephen’s looked to score jump-shots and layups in the paint. Princeton settled for mid-range jump shots.
Sartell-St. Stephen’s Preston Simpson could get his team involved in the offense. He did a good job of running the plays that he wanted ran. Simpson was a good communicator on the floor as well.
At halftime, the score was Sartell-St. Stephen 35, Princeton 30.  
As the second half got underway Princeton started the half in a zone defense.
Princeton used a lot of time off the clock in the second half. They passed the ball around the 3-point line to take time off the clock.
Princeton came up with steals on the defensive end and could convert them to layups on the offensive end.
Both teams were evenly matched. Neither team went on a huge run throughout the game.
Princeton’s James Flicek came up with huge 3-point shots in the second half to keep his team in the game. Also, teammate Adam Williams kept on coming up with big shots.
Sartell called a timeout with 12:06 left to go in regulation. The score was Sartell-St. Stephen 47, Princeton 43.
Sartell wasn’t afraid to shoot the deep 3-point shot. They always crashed the boards on both ends of the floor.
Princeton called a timeout with 10:22 left in regulation. The score was Sartell-St. Stephen 52, Princeton 47.
Williams kept on coming up with shots in the second half. The defense had a hard time of slowing him down.
Sartell called a timeout with 7:17 left in regulation. The score was Sartell-St. Stephen 57, Princeton 52.
Sartell kept attacking the basket in the second half. They were successful at hitting their shots.
Sartell’s Eric Markman came up with deep 3-point baskets late in the game.
The score went back and forth late in the game.
Princeton called a timeout with 31.5 seconds left in regulation. The score was tied at 67.
Princeton’s Shane Fleury came up with a huge shot with 7.2 seconds that gave his team a lead.
Princeton came away with the 70-67 victory over Sartell-St. Stephen.
The leading scorers for Sartell-St. Stephen Markman with 17 points, and Gieske with 13 points.
The leading scorer for Princeton was Williams with 33 points.
