DAWSON-BOYD TOOK ON MAHNOMEN IN THE CLASS A STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Dawson-Boyd (DB) went up against Mahnomen in the Class 1A Minnesota State High School League state football class A state final.
 
DB kicked off to Mahnomen to start the game. Mahnomen got the ball on their own 29 yard line.  
 
Mahnomen called a timeout with 11:13 left in the first quarter.  
 
Mahnomen kept the ball on the ground on their first drive. Tom Pavek for Mahnomen was able to get by the DB defense.
 
Mahnomen called a timeout with 7:54 left in the first quarter.  
 
Mahnomen found the endzone on a Kody Lefebvre seven-yard run. The extra-point attempt kick was
no good.
 
With 6:25 left in the first quarter the score was Mahnomen 6, DB 0.
 
DB fumbled the kick and Mahnomen recovered the ball.
 
DB called a timeout with 6:23 left in the first quarter.
 
Mahnomen found the endzone again with 6:08 left in the first quarter as Pavek ran in for a 10-yard touchdown. The two-point run conversion was no good.
 
With 6:08 left in the first quarter the score was Mahnomen 12, DB 0.
 
DB kept the ball on the ground on their drive. The Mahnomen defense was able to slow down the DB offense. DB punted the ball on fourth-and-10. There was no return.
 
Mahnomen got the ball on their own 30 yard line. Pavek completed a pass to Lefebvre for 38 yards.

That set up a 36-yard touchdown run by Bob Bjorge.
 
The two-point run failed.
 
With 3:51 left in the first quarter the score was Mahnomen 18, DB 0.
 
DB got the ball back after the touchdown. DB was not able to get a first down so Mahnomen took over on downs.  
 
Mahnomen went for it on fourth-and-four. They came up short so they turned it over on downs.
 
After one quarter of play the score was Mahnomen 18, DB 0.
 
DB continued to move the ball down the field.
 
DB called a timeout with 10:56 left in the second quarter.  
 
Joey Lee found Michael Lee for a nine-yard touchdown pass.  Eston Popma’s extra-point attempt was good.
 
With 10:50 left in the second quarter the score was Mahnomen 18, DB 7.
 
Mahnomen kept the ball on the ground. They were able to pick up little chunks of yards as they were able to penetrate the DB secondary.  Lefebvre completed a 44-yard pass to Pavek for a touchdown.  

Pavek’s extra-point attempt was good.
 
With 6:04 left in the second quarter the score was Mahnomen 25, DB 7.
 
DB got the ball on their own 40 yard line. They turned it over on downs and Mahnomen found the endzone on a 40-yard run by Austin Reitan. The extra-point attempt was no good.
 
With 4:53 left in the second quarter the score was Mahnomen 31, DB 7.
 
DB got the ball back after the touchdown. DB used both the rushing and passing attack late in the second quarter.  
 
DB called their final timeout of the first half with 1:02 left in the second quarter.  
 
DB went for it on fourth-and-one, but they were not able to come up with a first down.
 
Mahnomen got the ball back on the turnover on downs.
 
At halftime the score was Mahnomen 31, DB 7.
 
Mahnomen kicked off to start the third quarter.  DB got the ball at the 45 yard line. DB was not able to get a first down on their first drive of the quarter and they had to punt the ball on fourth down.
 
Mahnomen tried to move the ball down the field. On fourth-and six they went for it and they were not able to come up with a first down on a pass so they turned it over on downs.
 
DB got the ball on their own 21 yard line. DB was able to move the ball down the field in the third quarter. They seemed a little bit more relaxed as the game went on. DB came up with a first down on a Joey Lee run. DB found the endzone on 10-yard pass by Joey Lee to Michael Lee. The two-point conversion pass was no good.
 
With 3:42 left in the third quarter the score was Mahnomen 31, DB 13.
 
On the first play from scrimmage after the kickoff as Pavek found the endzone on a 61 yard Pavek touchdown run.  Pavek’s extra-point attempt was good.
 
With 3:21 left in the third quarter the score was Mahnomen 38, DB 13.
 
DB continued to look to get into the endzone late in the third quarter.
 
After three quarters of play the score was Mahnomen 38, DB 13.
 
Mahnomen looked to keep the ball on the ground and take time off the clock in the fourth quarter. 
Mahnomen was able to get into the endzone again on a one-yard run by Lefebvre.
 
The two-point conversion run by Reitan was good.
 
With 5:38 left in the fourth quarter the score was Mahnomen 46, DB 13.
 
Mahnomen was too much for DB. Mahnomen was able to come away with the 46-13 victory over DB.
 
After the game I was able to talk to Mahnomen’s Pavek, Reitan and head coach John Clark about the victory.
